| Well, I feel like the late comer to all this. So we are having a bake sale to defer costs???
I have never had a problem with either site and was using both frequently for trading and for H/W lists. The big thing I have liked is the forums in maxminis. I found them easier to navigate.
The way the forums are reminds me of some college classes I took and some other forums I have read. I'm not sure why everyone is saying they are ugly... they look fine and serve a purpose.

| two things this will help with for me:
1. I don't have to keep two different H/W lists up to date. In fact, I don't have a H/W on maxminis. Hordelings was easier to put my collection into.
2. Only 1 site to visit for all my DDM & SWM needs.
I can't wait. Though I do hope my H/W list doesn't go kaput. It'll take days to get it all back. AND I'm sure I've only got a "few" minis, others have tens of thousands... | | May you find peace and happiness at the hand of Hextor.

| I am glad to hear that we are in for some changes and it's nice to know that we'll be doing some upgrading. My biggest concern is how we'll mesh wih Hordelings. I went there a few times a long time ago but it was always so slow and sluggish to load everything that I quickly lost interest in the site. As long as that issue doesn't transfer over to the new Maxminis I'm happy with changes. I will say I'd prefer to keep Maxminis as the site and just forward Hordelings to it. Just my $0.02 on that.

Just in case we didn't explain properly (you aren't the first to comment along these lines):
We aren't moving MaxMinis onto Hordelings, and we aren't moving Hordelings on MaxMinis. We are building a 3rd, separate and distinct site. It will be on it's a separate server and separate database from what is currently being used by either site. It will have the look and tools of Hordelings, with the community and love of MaxMinis. Both domains will point to the new site.
That's the way the plan goes. Now to work out the details. [)]

| Awesome news. Thanks very much for undertaking a project of this magnitude, guys. It's really cool of you, and I'll echo what others have said: if you need cash, just ask!
If I'm permitted a slight rant: I have always hated Snitz forums. It is by far my least favorite part of Maxminis. Yes, simplicity is good, but so is customization. phpBB kicks Snitz in the behind six ways from sunday as far as I'm concerned. For the love of all that's holy, please promise me we're using phpBB, or really anything besides Snitz, for the new place?
Those of you who are crying for simplicity: how about typing just :) for a smiley instead of enclosing it in brackets [] ? How about being able to turn on or off signatures and avatars, so you can see them or not at your option? How about choosing your own "skin" (color scheme and whatnot) for the board, so you can "stealth browse" at work? All possible with phpBB.
Sorry, rant off. [)] (Damn, brackets again!)

1) 2) ... 8)

We're not using Snitz. [:)] We're also not using phpBB, however. Hint: google "phpBB security".
For my nickel, I'll note that "ultra-customizable" is by definition antithetical to "ease of use". However! "pretty" and "easy to use" are also not opposites, nor are "bloated" and "pretty" synonymous (as Zenako noted, the average page size on Hordelings, including all resources, is actually smaller than the equivalent page here).
The system we're using does allow you to turn off sigs, but not avatars (though that could easily be added, if there was some groundswell of support).

Heh, I was curious about the use of phpBB too. I've seen so many sites that use phpBB get the crap hacked out of them. I'm talking major forums with top entertainment companies. Not something I'd want to happen here.

| So if you're not using phpBB (which I didn't like very much either), what are you using? Is it something homegrown like the Hordelings forums or is it something freely available that has been modded to your needs?
If it's completely homegrown, then I hope it's easier to use than the current Hordelings system. No offense to Kevin, but there is a reason why the vast majority of forum software has "standardized" on stuff like BBCode and the Category --> Forum --> Sub/Child Forum formats. [)]

People comfortable with BBCode over Textile formatting will continue to be able to use BBCode, while people who prefer Textile over BBCode will continue to be able to use BBCode. Both will of course gain the sweet additions made (such as the pop-on-hover stats blocks, media embedding, and simple linking) to the existing Textile engine.
Hordelings has followed the Category -> Forum -> Sub/Child Forum paradigm since its inception. Not to call on you specifically (you hand wasn't really raised), but what about the current UI doesn't track that way for you? This is a common complaint, so obviously something is broke, but I truly and honestly haven't found the explanation that clicks for me to fix it. | 1) Please, whatever you do, design the forums for full-screen rather than 1024x768. I have a 21" monitor, and the current Hordelings looks... not so good... on 1600x1200.
2) Not sure how viable they'd be, but there are two features of the new Invision Power Board that I really enjoy. Both are JavaScript-driven (I think), and one is probably not so easy to implement on a custom-built forum software, but I can always dream... anyways, they are: 1) Rich Text Editor for posts (can be enabled/disabled for those who prefer to type BBCodes manually), and 2) the ability to quick-edit posts (you click on quick-edit and the post switches from rendered view into editable view).
3) I am not a big fan of drop-down menus, so I'd suggest offering an alternative (e.g. tree view menu on the left or right side, instead or above the active forum thread box). | | Hypethetical Blood War Set List | Champion of the Gelugon | Vindicated Prophet of Blood War Ha 69/80 | De 60/60 | Ar 57/60 | GoL 72/72 | Ab 60/60 | DK 60/60 | AF 60/60 | UD 59/60 | WD 57/60 | WDQ 3/60| BW Total DDM Count: 1037 | No chance of finishing the set | Will finish the set | Set

| This is very exciting. I'm looking forward to it. I'd be happy to donate semi-regularly if funds are needed (paypal is about the only option for me).
I have a couple of suggestions, if you are playing round with the hw/list or trade search for the new site. I haven't been to hordelings for ages, so I don't know if any of these exist there already.
1. ages ago, there was a quick edit option on the hwlist, where you could click to add one, and right click to remove one - I found it made it really fast to update my list, cause it only needed one hand (and I could hold the cards in the other).
2. a country option on the trade search would be great, and also, someway of limiting it to lists that have been updated in the last 6 months or so.
hmmm, it seems I have more than a couple of ideas [)]
3. The options for how you view the hw/list are very good, but, it would be nice to be able to set several of them, and then generate the view (rather than it starting as soon as you change one).
4. another option on the hwlist, so you could just see (and change the numbers of) the things you wanted, or had for trade would be faster than looking through the whole list to update the 5 minis you've just traded.
5. another thought for the trade search - which might be totally impossible - the ability to setup and save a list of 'friends' and just compare their lists to yours would be amazing. (This could be used for regular trading partners, or for people in your local area, who you might trade with even if they had nothing specific you wanted).
6. in the results of the trade search, a list of minis (or at least the rares) rather than just the number of each rarity would be nice.
7. please, on the new site, can we keep the policy of small signatures? I like to see sigs, cause they often have useful information, or links to repaint photos/whatever, but I really hate it when the sig gets bigger than the post. (I wonder if there would be a way to enfore the size on the screen where you edit it?).
I think that's everything, sorry it's so long. And, thanks for reading, and for all your work to get this happening.

Kevin, I have to admit that I haven't been to hordelings much for the forums lately so I had not seen the changes you had made. The forums do, indeed, look very nice now. Thanks for pointing it out to me. :)
In the past, however, I remember it being difficult to figure out the hierarchy of the forum. I also especially remember that looking at a specific thread could be extremely painful as I could never figure out exactly which view would make it so I could see all responses to a given thread. Your current setup, however, seems to have fixed all that. :)

What I've heard so far sounds great. On the development side, I'm sure you have all your bases covered, but if you need help, I'm highly proficient in PHP, SQL (especially mySQL), HTML, XML, etc. On the money front, if you guys need it, setup a paypal donations link or something similar, and I'm in.
(I'm sure you guys have hashed this out in detail, but I'd much prefer a voluntary donations link than a for-pay site - I have a feeling that the luckier ones of us with higher disposable incomes can and would carry the freight on keeping the site up.)

Well, I took a gander over at hordelings last night and I must say that it looked much better than I remember! Good work on the updates, Kevin.
However, and I realize that my internet connection is probably infamous for its lack of stability, I did have many problems getting pages to load and load all the code completely. I had a number of "Done, but with errors on the page" messages. One of the advantages that the current maxminis style offers me is that if I'm just missing the graphics, it's not a big deal. I can still navigate and even post with a shakey connection (and some determination).
I don't know that I'd be able to do that at hordelings. Truth be told, I'm looking to upgrade (perhaps this year, maybe next) to DSL or a cable modem, but there might be others in my dial-up shoes.
Also, is there a way to have your password resent from hordelings? I didn't see that as an option (although I could have missed it). | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

| | Well, I've been lurking alot lately, but I've been worried about the future of Maxminis since Webmaster sold off his collection a few months back. I'm glad to see that the powers that be are coming together to form a Voltron-like contraption to defend the earth...and minis. For the record, I'm all for it. Just don't erase my account...please. | | **Note: Unless otherwise stated all my minis are unbagged** My reference thread is at: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12765 Graduate school is swollowing my soul!!!! | | I too am excited about this, and will gladly contribute $$ to the cause. But, like many who have posted here, I've had difficulties with the Hordelings site. I hope the merger works for the best functionality in terms of h/w lists (and features thereof) and the forums. | | My H/W list is not current... Trade Reference List OLD Trade references (191) | |

Just so you know it is my understanding (and someone more knowledgeable than I can step in too if I am wrong please) that the interface will be totally new. Kevin has done alot of good work over there improving it, but this will be a combo thing literally with the best of all worlds. So much of what you see at Hordelings look will be different (I think its not even the same forums program, again Jai, Chris, or Kevin please correct)
I feel like the Cheerleader for the new place ;P good work Jai youve turned me into your pawn | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.
