| Simple question, but I think it needs to be aired out fully:
Please answer with one of 3 choices:
YES, I support advertising on MaxMinis because XYZ
NO, I don't Support advertizing on Maxminis because XYZ

Thanks for your input

I support advertising on Maxminis.
But ...
I have to qualify that with " ... as long as the advertisements aren't animated." Animated banners and the like are so annoying that I go out of my way not to buy the products they advertise. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| I do not support advertising at maxminis. I see advertising everywhere, and one of the great things about maxminis is that there is not advertising here.
Advertising would bother me, but advertising that was not for products very close to the things the site is about would bother me even more. D&D product advertising (like Dragon magazine, D&D accessories, storage containers, etc.) would be the most tolerable. | | "Look to God and live." | I do not care if ads are put up, provided that:
The ads are not intrusive, in the systematical sense. If it's trying to install software on the user's PC (or will try to if you click on it), it has no place.
So long as that is adhered to, I wouldn't mind a few ads. I might actually even click a few if it genuinely helped MaxMinis.
I would also advise against any ads that utilize Shockwave Flash. Some people think animated ads are simply ugly; in the case of .swf format stuff, it can even cause a browser to lock up. That will gut attendance in a hurry. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725

| I support advertising as it can make a great many things possible. Provided that said advertising is in direct relation to the subject matter of the forums, and is done tastefully, why not? Restrict it to members or those who deal in minis. There are enough among us who sell miniatures who might not mind forking over some loot to promote their business whether it be in an ebay store or a local distributer.

| I support advertising on Maxminis. Maybe it's more accurate to say "I don't care," since I pretty much tune out all advertising anyway, but I would not feel adversely towards Maxminis' operators if they felt the need to bring in advertising, so I'll say I support it.. We are not entitled to this site, and we are certainly not entitled to its being ad-free.

| "The problem is choice."
I would support ads, if they were not animated, were not annoying, and were restricted to only certain forums (such as Marketplace and Trading).
I would not support ads if they were invasive, and especially if they were invasive in the General and Skirmish forums.
I think ENWorld comes pretty close to doing ads right.

| No I don't support advertising on this site.
This is a fansite, and as such should be maintained and supported by the fans. It should not be a means of earning income for the owner. Also I'm not sure if maxminis could maintain the support that they do with WotC folks and have advertising. | | My online store http://store.hoardsters.com Use quick search to see scans of every stat card!

| The good thing about ad revenue is that it scales with use. Maxminis' community has been growing for a long time. We've just seen the latest problem with that growth in the need to move to a different server. Maxminis is the largest resource consumer of the hosting site, and within the next year will likely demand more capacity than it can deliver. Basically, we're being booted out.
We're in this pickle because everyone loves maxminis so much. Many of you have offered to help pay to keep the site going, and that's great. Yet that solution has a problem in making it sustainable. An ad solution should bring in a continual stream of money enough to cover the hosting, and its scales with additional use (even when bandwidth spikes over normal allotments - imagine costs shooting up like cell phone usage after monthly limit is passed.)
Maybe its not the right solution, but its worth exploring.

| I have a feeling that if they want ads on this site, they are gonna put them on whether we want them or not. (Money talks and all that)
So if it's inevitable, have them small, out of the way, and unannoying. If I have to punch any monkies, fight popups, or lose my browsing ability at work...bye bye maxminis. | | Champion of the Alhoon and my called shot for Unhallowed Blood War Called Shot: Phoenix Trade withe me!

| I think I'm all three.
In principle, I am not opposed. If the webmaster who owns the site needs an income to pay for it, I understand that. It's his site, he should be able to do as he wishes.
Conceptually, speaking as a community member, I like this website, and I do not want it to change. At all. I visit every day, because I like the way it is currently. If I don't like the changes to come, I might stop coming so frequently. I might come more. I'm not sure. I believe it might actually strengthen the community to be able to donate small amounts to keep it running as is. Avoiding commercialization of the site will help keep it the way it currently is. Which is the way I like.
In reality, if all we're talking about is advertisements, then I don't care. I don't see ads when I'm using Firefox with Adblock installed. Which is now everywhere that I use a computer. I will block ads from this site and others, and I won't feel very bad about it. I don't subscribe to the logic that says that if I don't look at ads for a website that has them, or block them out, then I'm in essence doing something wrong.

| I don't CARE if there are ads on this site AS LONG AS they are limited to DDM, SWM and AAM and NO POP-UPS whatsoever, otherwise I will have to be on the NO, I don't Support advertizing on Maxminis because of the reasons listen above.
It is webmaster's site and he can do what he wants with the name maxminis, a name we have helped build and make highly recognizable, just as we are free to move on and continue the community elsewhere.

| Ads would be OK for me, BUT : - No animated/sound adds, flash, pop-ups and whatever. Only small ads (like google ads) - Only ads linked to RPG and miniatures (possibly CRPGs) - AND NO AD TRYING TO INSTALL SPYWARE, DIALERS OR ANYTHING ON MY COMPUTER, OR IT'S BYE-BYE.

| Advertising is sometimes a necessary evil imo.
My advert blocker/web filter (proxomitron) will kill them anyhow, so personally won't make any difference.
I`m more likely to donate than click on an Ad.
It becomes a crunch for many forums, and some survive the economic necessity with community intact, others don't.
I definitely don't want the focus of the site to be revenue raising.
I also think forums discussion is the right place for this topic. | | "Mutton yesterday, mutton today, and blimey, if it don't look like mutton again tomorrer." | While all putting ads on the site would do for me is install AdsGone on my computer again I'm not keen on the idea. Even if I would never have to see them. Still if I logged in at other places than at home I'd hate to have flashing adds that are basically saying "CLICK THIS AD!" I hate it when sites have that kind of crap. If I was insured that it was only to make sure the site had enough revenue to run and not to put cash into the webmaster's pocket because he wants to use the site as his new cash cow then I'd be okay if it was deemed necessary to keep the site running but only in that circumstance. I'd leave in a heart beat if it does change to a hugely ad heavy site with popups and flashy ads to make him bank. Also I'd cut down on my use of the site big time if it started including tons of crap like Pokemon, Magic and Clix games. I have a feeling that would make the site more bogged down with garbage I don't want to see which would in turn make me look elsewhere.
