Given the urgent need for mods, I went down the moderators post and wrote down everyones name that expressed an interest, then added them (if I missed someone or forgot someone that was recently a mod and wants to continue mod'ing, talk to merric or email me).  PLEASE DO NOT ABUSE YOUR POWERS.  If you aren't sure when to moderate, don't-- fall back to the more senior mods like merric and zenako and let them know about the questionable thread.  Merric has final say on who stays a mod and who loses their modhood

Mods that were added are:

*bert to troll
*blackguard
*dj-chuckles
*Cthulhufnord
*zenthrus
*krush
*wakeXX
*turt
*jgsugden
*LCS forums
*Johnnyfive
*arlequino
*ack
*kypdurron
*Faragdar the Wise
*zenako
*B

Thank you webmaster. I was just wondering if we have specific responsibilities, like the old site, or if we are just general mods. Also, is there a mod primer of sorts? What sort of powers do i have now, and how do I use them? Just curious.

Thanks again

I'd be happy to continue moderating as I did in the old forums.  I'd email you, but you don't have an email address listed in your profile.

Edit: I may have been added now as I can see the "Moderate" link at the top of the screen.  I'll have to figure out how this new interface works.

you should be a mod as you were the one to set this into motion   I just forgot to put you on the list

I haven't seen any change after being made a trial mod. No shiny new "Moderate" button appeared.

fixed, sorry about that

How does one move a thread to the correct forum??

Is there a FAQ / help topic for moderator functions beyond "edit"?

I went through the forum documentation and there is very little about moderating other than having forums where the moderator approves posts.  Could you guys experiment a bit and figure out the features and document them for the other mods in a thread?

Ditto.  An FAQ for moderators, for instance, would be great.

The way things are currently set up, it appears that all moderators can moderate in any forum.

At the moment, the only capabilities that being a moderator adds is:

1) the ability to edit any post

As a general rule of thumb, try to leave some sign of who you are, what you edited, and why.

2) the ability to sticky a thread

You can sticky a thread by editing any post in the thread and choosing the "pinned" option at the bottom of the editing area. You can also choose the "pinned" option when making a new post to the thread.

As a general rule of thumb, only threads that many users are going to repeatedly access for information should be stickied. If too many threads in a sub-forum get stickied, it starts to clog up the forums.

3) the ability to lock threads

You can lock a thread by editing any the first post in the thread and choosing the "locked" option at the bottom of the editing area. You can also choose the "locked" option when making a new post to the thread.

As a general rule of thumb, you should make a new post which explains why you are locking a thread and then choose the "locked" option, to ensure that everyone knows why the thread was locked.

At the moment, there doesn't seem to be any support in this version of the boards software for moving threads to different forums or deleting posts (or lots of other things).

The "Moderate" button is intended for an option that is currently turned off for all of the forums, which requires a moderator to approve all posts before they appear on the boards. I'm assuming this is going to stay off, since otherwise it would basically smother all conversation here.

As far as I can tell, Moderators can:

  • Lock threads. (Locked?)
  • Make threads sticky (Pinned?)
  • Edit threads

Moderators can *not* move threads. (If Wuzzard or the Webmaster can find out how to give that ability to regular moderators, it'd be great!)

To lock or stickify a thread, you can do this through the edit function, or by adding a new reply. (See the Pinned? and Locked? options at the bottom of the screen).

Moderators are not assigned *at present* to particular forums. The function is quite different to the old software, and you have moderation abilities over the entire site.

However, I'd like there to be two or three "contact" people for each forum, so if a problem comes up, you're the ones that are e-mailed. At present, I'll set up a sticky in each forum saying "MODERATORS: MerricB, Zenthrus, ChristopherGroves" or the like.

(Apologies for not dealing this over the weekend - I found myself without internet access, except for about 10 minutes at a friend's).

Cheers!

I'm baffled by what is going on...  Did anyone get some head's up as to how this change was going to go down?

Did they post in the thread that webmaster used for his collation of candidates?  They might have also declined.  (Chris had already been talking of reducing/changing his role here many months back for non-board reasons.)

Merric, on your list I do not see anyone currently moderating the Dreamblade forums. Now if you don't already have enough moderators, I would volunteer seeing as I spend quite a few hours a day on this site.

I have no idea if I'm a mod or not  ... how do I tell?

That said, I'm certainly not "here more than anyone else" due to external factors as Z mentioned.  I'd be happy to help if folks need it, but I also think it is suitable and appropriate to see the torch passed.  There are plenty of great folks in the community here and it brings a smile to my face to see the list of names who are now responsible for helping sheppard this site into the future.

When posting, do you see a "Pinned?" and "Locked?" checkbox? That's how. :)

Webmaster didn't add any names except those in that thread; I've been overbusy recently and haven't properly compiled a list of previous mods that are continuing. Apologies about that. (I'm still overbusy, btw).

When a thread gets locked should the Mod put a reason for this?

There was a thread that I felt bordered on the line of acceptable and it is now lock in Off Topic without any notes from a Mod.

[/QUOTE]

Yes, please post an explanation when you (as in the collective y'all) lock a thread.

Why?

1) It takes only a few more seconds to reply and create a new post explaining why the thread is being locked at the same time you lock the thread, compared to editing an existing post and locking the thread.

2) If people have complaints or questions about why the thread was locked, or what the acceptable limits are if they wish to start a similar topic, they know who to ask.

Two people have emailed me about the original thread in General that "inspired" the off-topic thread in question, assuming that I was one who locked it, even though all ll I did was edit the title.

If you don't feel confident enough in your decision to take credit for your actions and any potential criticism for it, then leave the thread alone and refer the thread to another mod and get their opinion.

If you are considering locking a thread because part of it was obviously out of control, but there is still other reasonable discussion going on, you can post a warning instead, or temporarily lock the thread and then refer it to another moderator to look at.

In my opinion, regardless of the action you take, two of the most important things about being a moderator are a) helping to guide other users by making sure they realize what is and is not acceptable and b) taking public responsibility for the actions you take.

3) If you don't explain why you are locking a post, then any mod who disagrees should be free to unlock the post. People have different standards, and as much as the mods will try to enforce a unified standard of what is acceptable, sometimes there will be disagreements even among mods about what crosses the line.

Unlocking a previously locked post would normally be something that the mods who disagree should confer about, and even in cases where someone who is the head moderator like Merric decides to overrule another mod there might be a reason to contact the original mod who locked the thread.

If you don't post who you are when you lock a thread, there is no way for another mod to know if someone who "ranks higher" in that particular forum locked the thread, or to ask for more information, or to discuss why the thread was locked if they disagree.

Note: if you unlock a thread that was inexplicably locked, you should also always post an explanation even if all it says is "I've unlocked this thread since the content seems to be within acceptable bounds and no reason was given for locking it."

4) If you don't explain why you are locking a thread, it has a tendency to upset other users. Most people realize that some standards need to be set for what is acceptable and what is not, but if the moderators don't explain how they are enforcing those standards it just makes any difference of opinion between a user and that (potentially unknown) mod worse since the user has no idea of what the mod was thinking.

Got to agree with what was just said above.  Lock a thread, provide a reason.  If you can't give a reason, then you probably should not have locked it in the first place.  We used to have the ADMIN forum where we would move especially inflaming threads that merited further action by an ADMIN.  This way the damage/flame was controlled but the evidence was maintained to support BANS or account locks and to give other mods a chance to chime in on the process.  That option is not currently available, so locking is the best option and supply the reason.

The "line in the sand" location is a constant issue with various mods, but it was a rare occurance when a decision would get overruled, and usually the original locker of the thread undid his own deed upon further reflection or information.   Pitting mods against each other, like a child working both parents to get the best result is not to be encouraged.

Does it follow from this that there is also no way, currently, to ban people?
