Since Maxminis has been going under a lot of changes, another change that I would like to propose is in regards to Mods locking threads.

I've been outspoken about this before. One of my biggest beefs with this website is the attitude certain people have when it comes to others posting in threads.

Once again, someone has decided that "we" are done posting about a certain topic. So once again, the thread has been locked:

http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/forumid/74/postid/659380/view/topic/tpage/7/Default.aspx

I'm sorry, but even a moderator shouldn't have the right to decide when a topic is done. If a topic is done, it will die on it's own and no one will post to it. Just because it gets bumped because someone wanted to post to it and you're tired of reading about it does not mean the conversation should be over. There may be people that still want to add to that thread and there may be people that would like to read what's added to that thread.

As far as I know, threads are only supposed to be locked when a rule has been violated. Please point me to the rule that states a moderator can lock threads when he's bored of the discussion.

I really don't see why this is such a problem on this website. This kind of behavior happens a lot here.

Just so you know, that thread was left open even when some wanted it to be closed. The thought was it should be closed because of the negativity generated toward WotC. I disagreed and left it open. That was probably around page 4 or 5.

I gave it a long leash because I felt it was necessary and needed for people to be able to vent and not have their thoughts shut down just because the talk was negative toward WotC.

That thread has 136 replies and 4793 views. You don't consider that a sufficient base for comment and discussion? What else is left to be said?

Unbelievable.....so people were requesting it be locked simply because someone had an issue with WotC? I'm certainly glad you didn't lock it because of that, thanks.

What is with people here? Members can't even express disagreements without people being offended? As long as it's not insulting, flaming, or trolling, why is it a problem? So it's great that WotC staff reads this website. But what is the logic of telling people not to criticize them? The WotC staff wouldn't be reading here if they weren't doing it to better their company. If they aren't getting critiqued, how can they improve? Even if it may lead up to a flame, moderators shouldn't be told to lock a thread "just in case". We can't be punished before a crime has even happened. If someone insults WotC, THEN punish that person and explain why. Drill it into peoples heads that we won't stand for insults.

We don't want to have the trolling-poster mentality here, but being the exact opposite of a troll is just as bad. This place needs a middle ground and I'm hoping mods will tell these people to get a thicker skin. Geez.

But as a poster and a lurker, I don't like anyone telling me when I'm done posting or viewing a thread no matter how many replies and views it has. If it is ready to die off, the thread will die off. It's possible someone may have added something insightful to the topic later on. We don't need babysitters here. There's no other reason to lock a thread like that other than for control reasons. As a member of the community, I find it very frustrating. I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, but this is something that you should keep in mind. I'm not the only one that has been annoyed by this type of moderation here.

Thanks for listening.

And yet no one has emailed me on any thread I've locked *sigh*
Look, overall I'm pretty reasonable. I won't lock any thread for a trivial or superficial reason and if anyone has issue with my moderation I'd encourage them to email me and we can discuss it.

I did not make this decision in a vacuum. The locking of the thread in question had been discussed by several mods and after a lot of thought I felt since it had run its course it deserved to be locked.

The only reason I started this thread is to let moderators know that maybe that isn't something that a mod should decide on.

Let the posters decide when the topic should die. If it's meant to die then it won't get any replies. I really don't see the point of taking the time to lock a thread for that reason. It doesn't make any sense.

If you agree, great. If not, then ok...at least I spoke up.

There is a certain point where the discussion is just being recycled, and it does seem (at least to me) that the thread had reached that point.

When a thread gets that long, it becomes much less likely that someone who finds the thread and decides that they would like to make a comment is going to read all the way through to the end before replying. So what usually happens is that most of the new posts are comments about things that were said in posts from the first few pages, and the chance of new discussion goes down significantly. The thread gets bumped from the new reply, leading to someone else finding the discussion, and so the cycle continues with little chance of any new content being added to the discussion.
