Don't mix.

I locked and moved the post from the General forum earlier today.

I received a few emails from people who pointed out its offensiveness.

Consider the issue closed.  If anyone feels their expression interests are being violated, I suggest you take it up with LCS.

To some, the original post may not be offending. To others, it is an insult to a politician they support and - by proxy - an insult to them.

It's best not to try and judge whether or not you think a political post is offensive or not, because your sensibilities on that matter may be quite different. I oppose political posts in this forum because I've seen other forums destroyed by endless political bickering.

Better to just keep the discussion to minis and frequent a political forum (there are PLENTY) for the other stuff.

MuscledDestroyer,

I talk about politics ALL DAY long. I am a member of a political forum.

No one is taking away your right to say what you want - just where you might want to say it. Maybe you want to turn this into a Miniatures Gaming & Politics forum, but the powers that be have thankfully decided to keep the subject focused. I'm thankful for that.

With free speech comes the right to free association. If you want to create a Miniatures Gaming & Politics forum, go do so. No one is stopping you. Those that wish to associate with that forum will choose to do so.

Every forum has its rules based on the creators and members of that association. The mods are well within their right to enforce those rules.

Thank you for keeping this forum politics free, mods. Seriously, *thank you*.

And, on that note, since this is cutting perilously close to politics as it is - if not crossing the line entirely - that will be the last I have to say on the subject.

I did not keep a copy of the thread. It is in an area that is accessible to moderators and administrators in case it needs to be looked at for any future issues.

Regarding politics and MaxMinis and free speech and all that: yes, you're free to discuss what you'd like. And moderators are free to follow the rules by getting rid of inappropriate material.

We don't need to split the community on these lines or any others.

This is a forum for the discussion of the D&D Miniatures game. Some of these topics, within limits, can be brought up in the Off Topic forum.

Good point.  I cannot find it myself now.  It used to be a stickied thread at the top of the general forum, I believe.  I guess a moderator would have to tell us where the protocol is.

With lack of protocol visible, I guess there really isn't official protocol until the moderators indicate otherwise.  I ask the moderators to make whatever protocol there is clearly available and easy to find in a stickied thread.

It is much easier to abide by rules of a message board when the rules are easy to find and clearly stated.

True, but as the old adage goes, "The right to swing your fists ends at someone elses nose"

Besides, Theoretically, this server or owner thereof could be based in another country, where freedom of speech isn't guaranteed.

The right to discuss the issues isn't in question. People are free to discuss politics. They can email each other back and forth. The freedom of speech does not mandate that a message board is required to support discussion on any issue. This message board was made for DDM and other miniatures and roleplaying games connected to them. Politics is not within that scope. Religion isn't either. I am a person that would discuss religion if I knew that others were interested in discussing it. Since real world religion is not within the scope of this site, I respect that and do not really discuss religion. I may have seen or very briefly posted a comment less than five times in my 5000+ posts, but basically, it was knowing that real world religious discussions were not within the scope of maxminis, and I would have discouraged any further discussion on this site had someone responded. If someone were to have interest, then I could email them or they could email me, but that hasn't really happened much either. I do recognize that there are religions in the RPG's and some of the figures are clerics or divine casters. Discussing the religions of the game is one thing. Getting into any realistic comparison or connection or analysis with real world religion would not be the best idea, IMO. And if you want to talk about freedom of speech being squashed anywhere, I have not seen any area in the freedom of speech realm in the USA that has been violated more strongly and regularly than freedom to discuss religion.

Before we get confused on the issues, this is not Freedom of Speech issue. That is a right for public discourse. This is a private board. It is owned and operated by a group who can make whatever rules they want. If you own a board, you can outlaw the word purple if you so desired since it's your board. And if you think this rule is draconian, check out all the other message boards you must be a member to join on and you'll always see some restrictions.

If it wasn't case and point why discussing politics on a board like this is a bad idea, check out this thread. Just the discussion on the discussion has had some brief flare ups. Imagine if the topic was actually a heated one.

I'm not exactly sure it was a political statement. It was stats on George W Bush as a mini... with strange abilities. I took it as a joke, like any satyrical comedian like Leno or Letterman would do... ugh, so many short fuzes.

Greyhaze,

Problem was, not a single one of the abilities had a positive spin. Every single ability was an indirect attack or insult of some kind. Best to just steer clear of this stuff altogether than to start making judgments about what might be offensive and what might not be. Your opinion on the matter may differ significantly than someone else's.

And here I am, back on a thread that I had swore off. Sigh.

You see? Politics just *sucks* you in, whether you want to pay attention or not.

Spot on my friend. Some folks get their panties all in a bunch and start quoting "freedom of speech" and such. uh-uh, not on a privately owned message board.

On a larger note....There are many, many, many message boards out there (other than Maxminis) where political talk is allowed. Such discussion should be at those message boards, not this one.

I raised the issue in an effort to avoid a debate like this one. And to avoid watching my beloved Maxminis devolve into a joke of a message board.

Again, please go visit http://messages.finance.yahoo.com/mb/CSCO to see what happens to a message board when political "discourse" is left unchecked. That board is supposed to be about Cisco stock. Does it look that way to you?

Personally, I believe the Maxminis mods are correct to nip potentially incendiary "political" threads in the butt before Maxminis starts looking like THAT.

Hell, I'm even starting to hope that THIS thread gets locked.

No, he wasn't.

I found the thread quite offensive and requested that such postings not occur even in the Off Topic section.

I did not see any humor in the supposed comedy.

Seemed to me it was long after Bolobaby's complaints before anybody else pipped in and said "hey, you know what, I do find that insulting".

Regardless, I will digress, it's not my forum to judge what is allowed to posted based on whether it is offensive or amusing. Just wanted the OP to know that there were others that did not find the post offensive, and let other readers know that it may not have been intended as such.

And therein lies the problem.

In *all* political discourse, there are two sides to the story. You - being of one political bent - might write something that you think cannot possibly be offensive. Others, of a different leaning, might find the statement horribly offensive. In their "benign" response, they post a few comments that they assume are completely non-confrontational. Instead, the original poster takes offense and... surprise... flame war begins.

So, by pointing out that you don't find something offensive only reinforces the notion that politics should probably be avoided altogether. After all, if we can't tell what would be politically offensive, how can we trust that the conversation would remain civil.

Now... how about Thieves' Quarter, huh? Is that map broken *or what*???

Maybe because a lot of the complaints were not posted pubicly.  To quote the original post:

I received a few emails from people who pointed out its offensiveness.

Basically this opens the door to being censored on everything, since you could always find someone to contradict another. *sigh* whatever, the point is moot, enjoy.

i come here for the mins talk and occasionaly off topic stuff but mostly to improve and share knowledge. i dont come here for news headlines or to make fun of any affiliation as there are plenty of places to do that. Same with a rock concert. i went o hear my favorite sons not too my president shead put on a stick or be preached too. as Maximus said i came to be entertained.

Part of the reason I got out of the minis community is the lack of maturity shown by the fact that many people that make it up can't handle a political discussion. The same people who can't hold a discussion without getting offended are the people who ruin tournaments and scare away new players. No sense of humor equals death to the hobby. Some people can't handle a discussion of the rules of plastic miniatures, its not surprising they can't handle a discussion about reality. It's pathetic. I'm disgusted.

Sigh - see?

You mistake reluctance to speak about politics IN THIS FORUM as a "lack of maturity" and translate that to mean they "can't handle a political discussion."

I talk politics ALL DAY. I can debate politics with the best and know more political facts than the vast majority of people I meet. I will press a political discussion when it has been instigated and the "wrong" party tries to back out after facts have been thrown in their face. Nothing ticks me off MORE than a drive-by political attack that doesn't allow a proper response. If you make a political attack, expect a response.

BUT...

I don't come to Maxminis to discuss politics. If this board went political, I'd probably go elsewhere. After a while, you get sick of talking politics and you want a pleasant diversion. I don't make party-affiliated political attacks here, nor do I want to see them. It has nothing to do with being cowardly or immature or overly-sensitive. It has to do with the fact that this is a MINIS forum. My *other* home away from home is a political forum.

NOW...

Who thinks the Large Gold Dragon would be playable if it had dual activation?
