| Posted By BoloBaby on 07/16/2007 4:37 PM You mistake reluctance to speak about politics IN THIS FORUM as a "lack of maturity" and translate that to mean they "can't handle a political discussion."
Actually, I was taking it more as intolerance rather than reluctance. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | I'd like to build on Bolobaby's response, and I thank him for it.
I believe there's many people on these forums who can hold great discussions. I agree that I don't want to read political stuff here, but I don't mind a little.
However, from my experience there's an element that hurts the growth of the community. Like I said, some people can't handle a discussion of the rules of plastic miniatures, its not surprising they can't handle a discussion about reality.
Can't we speak like adults, like men and kings of this hobby without fear? Its a matter of respect, honor, and principle. Not cowardice about what people say.
I don't have a LGD yet. I'd paint one up nicely if I did. | | | |

| I don't think thieves quarter is broken and dual activation would help the Gold, even though 140 poitns remains a lot,

It's easy to throw around lofty concepts like self expression, topical relevance, privacy, tolerance, and so forth; in real life they aren't independent of each other and don't exist in any absolute form.
Somewhere in that non-linear non-orthagonal n-dimensional space is a point that's perfect for you right now (even if you aren't sure yourself exactly where it is, what the words I just wrote really mean, or whether that same point will still be perfect for you tomorrow).
The problem is that everyone else has a different "perfect" point.
Luckily, most people are able to adapt and have a comfort zone around their own "perfect" point, which allows interaction with other people to be productive instead of confrontational.
The goal of the rules here is to define a region in that space where as many people as possible can interact comfortably.
There will always be some grey areas, but I realize that we need a more concrete code of conduct and set of rules, and I'm working on improving that.
Your comfort zone probably has parts that are outside what the rules of this forum allow, so there will be times when it will take some effort on your part to make sure that you follow the rules even when you disagree with them.
The question you need to answer is whether or not the effort is worth it to you compared to the benefits of continuing to participate in this forum. I hope it is. If not, I hope you're able to find another forum that's more closely aligned to your comfort zone.

To address the specific issue of why certain topics generally aren't allowed:
Experience has shown that certain topics will eventually result in problems, no matter how innocent or well intentioned they are when they begin.
(a) topics where most of the participants are completely entrenched in their current position, when the most likely outcome of any attempt at discussion is for the people involved in the discussion to take offense at a comment made by the other side, rather than for the people involved in the discussion to learn something new.
(b) topics which are so volatile or so closely tied to personal beliefs that people can't avoid making veiled (or not so veiled) insults against people with the opposite viewpoint.
(c) topics that have a tendency to overwhelm any discussion about the original topic of a thread.
It may be possible for topics like politics and religion to be discussed in an acceptable manner, but it isn't probable.
Maxminis is an open forum, and while some accounts have been locked for violations of the rules, anyone who is an active member in entitled to participate in any discussion. Everyone has certain topics that they aren't able to be completely objective about, and it really only takes one person to derail a thread.
No matter how mature, how objective, or how good at communicating anyone believes themselves to be (including me), they're wrong. Everyone has bad days. Everyone makes mistakes.
The moderators here are volunteers and most of them are here primarily to discuss miniatures or to discuss random things in off-topic, and it isn't fair to force them to read through pages and pages of confrontational posts about a volatile topic in order to determine which user(s) crossed the line.
When a thread with a volatile topic is relevant to miniatures or to how the forum is run, we (the moderators) will do our best to allow that thread to continue. If the topic reaches a point where it is no longer productive or where it is getting out of hand, it will be locked.
If a thread is only tangentially related to miniatures and is basically a political statement or something equally volatile (like the thread that spawned this one), it really isn't much different from trolling. Whatever the intentions of the original poster of the thread that spawned this one, the stats for president Bush were in poor taste since it was obvious that they would be offensive to certain groups of people.
If you see a thread or post that is a problem, please report it to the moderators via email or by using the alert link on the right side of each post header, instead of adding a reply to the thread. If you want to discuss what is or is not acceptable for discussion here on Maxminis, the best place to do it is in the forum section (which is where this post will be moved in a few days) or by sending the lead moderator (me) an email.
Thanks.
