Dagni - I would love to play in either of the first two tourneys...
Where would we find out who we play and such? are we looking back here for the postings?

But anyways, my current plan is to have the inaugural tournament start sometime during the second week of January. So about Jan 8th - Jan 12th. The first tournament will be 200 pt (Assault, no speed 2, 8 figure limit, maps, probably untimed). I may well start another tourney (likely Sealed) a week or two after the first one.

Don't you think it's premature to eliminate Speed 2 rule without knowing if there are other limitations involved. I personally still think it won't happen exactly like they just get rid of it. For one that would make Independent creatures overcosted. Unless they change it to allowing them to always add commander bonuses. That I could see as a reasonable change for them. I just hope WoTC doesn't turn DDM into D&D for dummies.

I'll give it a shot. I've got a few games of vassal under my belt, but have nevered played in a contructed tourney before (just prerelease). I like the idea of time zone brackets, but I don't know if we have the balance here to do that.

Hey, let's get some tacos.

Premature? Yeah, in a sense. However, I don't see enough of a reason to stick with what we know will change, simply because we don't know all of the changes. In other words, I'd rather play as *close* to what the new rules will be, rather than with rules that we *know* will be far different.

We know:
maps, not tiles
8 figure limit, not 12
no more speed 2

In addition to those changes, there may be other changes. Those other changes, if they exist, could impact any and all of those above three changes, but I'd still prefer, say, maps to tiles. A good example, however unlikely, of a change that indirectly would affect maps is a change to the initiative rules. If commander ratings no longer get added to the init roll, that would have a huge metagame impact on warbands and map choice. Yet, the player that played with maps for months would adjust to that change quicker than the player who played with tiles.

Now, it is true that the "no speed 2 rule" is a special case. It's possible that the rule itself won't be what we think it is. The other two rule changes we know about we can be pretty well certain about. However, I can't personally think of any other way of doing the no speed 2 rule that would make any kind of sense. Sure, maybe Independant and Wild (and Difficult) will get new rules that we don't know about - but, in my opinion, that's no reason not to play with the new rule that you don't have to be in command to move normally. I know from experience that it can take a few games to get out of the habit of keeping everyone under command when it's their turn to move.

I am still hoping the No Speed 2 will equate to "while a commander is active in your warband".

That will take care of checking for LoS for being under command while not affecting the costs of independents, or giving fearless units a big advantage. But that is only partially on topic.

Back on topic....
Sounds interesting. I'd be up for timed games (although 1 hr may be too restrictive with potential lags, disconnects) Not so much a fan of untimed, but I could live with it.

When do the signups start?

Just wondering if there are any solid plans for the first tournament. It's getting kinda close to the second week of January and I just want to have enough time to be able to plan for this tournament. Any new updates?

By the way, I also want to thank Dagni for putting in the work to get these tournaments organized. I think it will be a great way to get experience against all different types of players and get a taste of what the toughest competition is like. I really appreciate your efforts.

Because I want everyone to have enough time to plan for the tournament, the tournament won't start until at least one week, and probably 2 weeks after I finally have decided on a the exact format, and have a sign-up sheet posted. Since that hasn't happened yet, yeah, it's not going to the second week of January.

I haven't decided yet whether or not I'll have a sign-up by the end of the week, or if I'll instead spend more time fine-tuning some of the minor details. So right now I'd expect the tourney to start either the third or fourth week of January.

-----

On time zone brackets: We could have a West Coast division, East coast division, etc; and have people play within their division in the first rounds of a tourney. Or even have totally seperate tourneys by time zone. However, say for example that I get Parag0n, Godemperor, Fenris, Tried, and maybe even smyrin to play in this tournament? We're all the same time zone, and none of us want to play each other in the first round of every tournament. They're the only guys I ever get to play in "Real Life"! RL games being much better than Vassal games would make that even less fun, the point of Vassal is to play players that I couldn't otherwise play.

Then too, sometimes time zone isn't the issue. The rare person that works the night-shift or whatever won't be able to play at the same time as others in his time zone. So, for example, rather than a West Coast tournament and an East Coast tourney, maybe I'd do a tourney that plays on Tuesdays at 8 pm eastern, and another that plays on Thursdays at 11 pm eastern. In some cases, west coast players would be able to do the 8 pm one, and vice versa. Less busy people could easily sign uup for both.

Different divisions within a single tournament I might try a similar thing, based more on each person's availability range for a given week than time zone. Although swiss style tournaments don't work well with division style play either.

Input welcome - I like the idea of something like availability brackets, but I haven't brainstormed a practical, precise way of implementing such. However, I don't have to be the one that figures it out (I just have to be the one that likes the final idea [:P]), so if anyone posts or emails me with a concrete plan, I'll certainly take a close look at it.

About time zones, any Eternal Campaign player will tell you that more often than not they aren't a problem.

I know there's a few Eternal Campaign Players in the UK and all over the US, and probably other areas that I am not aware of. It's usually not a problem, but there are times when people just can't get a game in.

Divisions or brackets might be a good way to solve this problem but it may limit certain players to certain opponents that they don't match up well against, or against certain people that they play often already. I'm impartial about it, but I am just throwing it out there that brackets may not be necessary.

Hello Dagni,

I think the first thing to be decided is how many people you want in the first tournament. If you have a limit, I think it would be relatively easy to have 2 tournaments like you said. One for Tuesday and one for Thursday.

If you don't have a limit, then I think it might work to post the first match followed up with the 2nd matchups. So, you might have game 1 being player A and B. Game 2 being player C and D. The winner of game 1 plays the winner of game 2 and the loser of game 1 plays the loser of game 2. (Or something like that.) Give everyone x number of days to get the first match in. At the end of that time, post the 2nd and third matches (with the real players names). This should help people get their schedules together so the matches can get played.

Assuming we will be using the same warbands each week, there shouldn't need to be a lot of preparation time needed for each match.

Thanks for running these, good luck with them, and let me know when you are going to start. [:)]

Whatever decision is made on brackets, I'd definitely prefer to allow the skirmishers to make their own schedule. Instead of requiring that we play on a certain night, I'd rather have it where the game must be completed and results sent in NLT a specified date/time.

So are we doing these end of the month or middle? Oh and as far as brackets It'd be nice for players to set their own times but also to have a tournament date where if you can play it'd be a good time to do so. That way people can plan around like they normally would.

Some thoughts on tourney format:

Another option for the tourney might be a set number of rounds, set to a time limit (My opinion is that 1 hour is a bit short for a Vassal game, 1.5 hours might work better), and run all the rounds in succession on a given day (my vote is a Saturday); just like a weekend tourney at your FLGS.

If it worked, we could do them every weekend or two, if it didn't work, all we'd lose is a day, not several nights over a few weeks :).

If we can keep it to, say 4 swiss pairs rounds and one final, it would be something like 8 hours.. ideally a few rounds would go by faster if everyone got their move on. This format might push us to 1 hour time limits to make it take a more reasonable amount of time: with that limit over your head I bet most of us could complete a game with time to spare, it's just a matter of cutting the chit-chat :).

Anyways, just an alternative idea. I personally really don't like the round-limit idea, since it could specifically benefit certain styles of warbands over others. The time limit is slightly easier to swallow.

TKort.

I beginning to think these tourneys will start later than sooner. I almost think we should just give a few trial runs for setting up tournaments. If anyone is game (pun intended) we can start another participant list and go from there. I'll post a new thread about it and see what we can figure out.

Sorry for my trouble and tardiness organizing this, everyone.

Here's what will happen. Monday night I will post in this forum and advertise on all the message boards with an informational post about these tourneys. Because of getting them started so late, and how soon War Drums will come out, I intend to simply organize basically 'filler' 8 person tourneys. As many of these as people want to do. That way, they can start as soon as 8 people sign up, and only run 3 weeks, ending right about when War Drums comes out, at which time I'll definitely be ready to start the first big tourney.

Also, since these will be small tournaments, I will attempt to allow everyone to choose what format they want to play, (200, 500, Sealed, or Draft) and for those interested in a preset schedule, what night of the week. There will also be an all-day Saturday tournament option (with no max size restriction) - we'll see if that gets enough interest.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I'd really like even these little tournaments to have the Hellspike maps available...

Working on them. I think small 8 person tourneys would work well for starters. Give you and the players a feel of how things will work out. I'm looking forward to it.
