Scenario: Boar Hunt

- EC Extension for Vassal which has some tiles for spell effects as well as some extra maps has been hosted on Maxminis (thanks Jai!) You can find them at the top of the stats area in the links

| Well, a big GREEN toast to all those that remember me not being able to play last march 17 due to St. Patrick's Day :).
SilentG I would say Thursday night (after 7 Mountain time) will be my best shot, Otherwise Sunday morning would almost be my next time. Let me know if you have something else in mind.. I might be able to work with it.. I will also try to contact you via Email

Summary:
Aeriden's band managed to swarm the first boar, and jump out to a 45 pt lead. I needed to roll anything but a 1 to kill the boar, and promptly rolled a one. I had a second chance to kill it, needing a 10, and rolled a 5. From there the game got really tight, as Casper flew through a wall and killed the boar, closing the score gap considerably. The second boar was placed favorably for scruffydude, but I got control of it and played keep away. Scruffydude scored 40 points off of that one, but I won initiative and finished it off to take a 10 point lead into the third boar. That boar was placed favorably for me, but scruffydude got to move it. I won initiative and had to move my justicator to block access to the boar for his blood ghost and xen'drik. The justicator passed morale and when I won the final initiative he rended the final boar to seal the win.
Another great game with scruffydude, and I look forward to the next one. He'll be uploading the logfile, since I started mine a little late.

Summary: Lucrezia stepped onto the field with her Sacred Watchers and said a prayer to Yondalla for luck in the coming Divine Hunt. She would be facing the dispicable Pike and his goblin followers. Pike started first, he and his followers raced towards the Divine Boar, but couldn't reach it. Lucrezia granted magic ot her lieutenant's incorporeal weapon, and raced through the walls in front of him preparing a charge against the Boar, his companion followed. Then the Boar charged Pike's Hobgoblin and struck him hard, laying his bloodied guts on the treasure room floor. Next, Pike lunged at the Boar and missed by a hair, then his astute follower took up the signal and struck home. The Watchers then attacked the Blackblade, and nearly killed him, but he stood his ground. Lucrezia inched toward the battle field. The Boar struck again, attacking the Blackblade and destroying him, the gods favored Lucrezia this day. Next Pike seized the initiative and landed a great shot into the Boar and his sword's spell was successful. But the blow didn't destroy the Boar so the Watchers slaughtered it, but in it's death-throes it lashed out at the nearest living creature, Pike, who was greatly wounded in the attack, and routed away. Lucrezia discovered a ring that can attract arrows and other ranged attacks to one of her allies, or herself, whilst Pike dropped his sword and found a shiny ring while he was retreating | |

Summary: The mistress moved out swiftly into the battlefield. There she caught sight of a ghostly creature standing beside a clearic of good. She contemplated her options and decided to act before investigating. Sending two magic missiles at the ghost, she watch as one connected and the other passed on through into the wall nearby. This concerned her greatly so she called down the archer to help dispatch the undead foe. Out of a nearby building rushes this gigantic boar as the ghost, cleric, and a small robotic creature are trying to hide around a corner. The beast rears up to attack but gets hit brutally in the head by the watcher. Following the watchers lead, the warforged scout stabs the boar visiously in the throat. Seeing the watcher and scout bravely defend the cleric almost brings a tear to the mistress's eye. How could she have been so wrong in attacking, we moves into position and fires off another magic missile. This one hits its mark and the boar squeals in pain. Not soon after the archer runs forward and downs the big beast. The boar thrashes about as it falls to the ground and knocks the watcher off its feet. To the dismay of both groups another boar rampages toward the cleric's party, wild eyed as it trys to come to the aid of the other boar. It runs up to the downed boar and finds its mate dead. The Watcher tells the cleric to make a break for the temple as it and the scout hold off the boar. Again the watcher deals a bone crunching hit and is followed up by the scout cutting two gashes into the boar's side. The archer fires another arrow into the boar as the mistress charges forward and sinks her sword to the hilt into the boar. Out of the corner of her eye she sees that watcher and scout hurrying after the cleric.

Summary:
He won tile init and closed the boar off in the treasure room so I couldn't get to it. He surrounded it with his warband and finished it off in two rounds. I scattered my warband (aside from my summoner and LT-to-be) to protect myself from fireballs and to get at the boar when it respawns. Boar respawned in my starting tile, I gained control and based my wemic. Wemic got ready to full-attack the boar and kill it.... but rolled a nat 20 instead. New boar started in my starting tile (again). I moved it to the same spot the last boar was at (unfortunately, I moved my wemic). Moved my wemic back and got ready to do 25 damage.... but rolled another nat 20 instead.
I'm going to have to agree with Wish; this kind of scenario gives itself to far too much randomness. If the boar spawns on or near my wemic's tile, I get a kill. If it spawns in his treasure room, he gets the kill. Particularly with tiles, it's easy to close off the boar's movement and corner it. | |

| It might be a MHB scenario, but that doesn't mean it's any good or that we should continue using it in EC. There's something significantly wrong with a scenario whose victory condition is killing something extremely fragile that shows up randomly next to one warband or the other.
Edit - Just played my third (and thankfully last) game of this scenario. Ended all of 3 activations into the second round. Had ehren won initiative, I wouldn't have even gotten a single activation in the second round. What an utterly ridiculous scenario. What sort of reasonable scenario has the strong potential to end on round two, first activation, with neither side even damaging the other? | | | |

| From my understanding of the scenario, I thought it could not spawn on the start up tiles. And a little random every now and then is not that bad. The only thing this scenario really suffers from is that the divine creature does not scale up to fit the level of the warband.
I think a Divine Umberhulk with a sliding DC would make a more interesting competition. The confusion would need to reset every new Umber Hulk of course. Or give the creature regen | |

Summary:
Skeer knew he had no chance against the boars head on. His best chance was to take Verlina down and then kill the boars from a distance. Setting up camp at a safe distance, Skeer's band started a volly of spells and psionics while Verlina and her band charged in for the boar. Skeer sent his imp in to weaken Verlina's foes. Then the boar sprung to life. It immediately went for Verlina, though was fooled by her concealment. Skeer was pleased the boar pheramones that he placed on Verlina's warband last night were working however. The boar continued it's onslaught against the drow for the entire fight (Qalpa didn't win a single boar roll).
Skeer's Imp then routed the Orc Brute in a critical blow. Not long after did the boar finally chop Verlina down. Seeing it had no chance against the boar heads up, the Arcane Guard ran towads Skeer's camp through the mummy's crypt. It was time to deal with those pesky kobolds that assailed her hunt... but the imp ran after her and the boar followed. Not long after, the Arcane Guard fell to the boar, while Skeer's band took to higher ground to kill the remaining boars at their leisure.

Edit - Just played my third (and thankfully last) game of this scenario. Ended all of 3 activations into the second round. Had ehren won initiative, I wouldn't have even gotten a single activation in the second round. What an utterly ridiculous scenario. What sort of reasonable scenario has the strong potential to end on round two, first activation, with neither side even damaging the other?
Wish, it sounds like you missed part of the rules. The boars do not respawn until the end of the round. That means if a boar was killed in round 1, the second boar appears before the start of round 2. The third and final boar cannot show up until round 3 at the earliest. Now, if your opponent killed both of the boars without you hitting them, then the game could essentailly be over early in round 2.
