I'm going on a train trip and was wondering if you can use Vassal offline to practice, review games, etc. Is this possible?

You can. Start a new game as player 1 and switch one warband to Red and you are ready to go. Play fairly for both side though. :)

Also, you can look at logfiles without joining the server. Vassal is very much a stand alone system as well as a way to meet those from across the world.

Haha. Yes, you can use it offline. And you really don't have to switch your player back and forth! [)]

I have Vassal loaded up on my laptop and when I'm somewhere that unfortunetly does not have a wireless router nearby, I load up Vassal and take a look at the movement of different warbands on different maps. When you run it, it will say it can't find the server or something like that and ask you to invite a player directly by ip address. You just cancel that and then you're in.

Actually, you don't even have to try to connect. If you're not connected to anything, it'll let you start up a game just fine.
