It -really- depends on the type of strategy you like.

In general (since you're trying to generalize here), you'd want:
- at least one decent ranged threat
- pieces that can hold up in melee
- a commander that adds value to your strategy (ranged, speed, etc.)

Beyond that, it all depends on if you're slinging area effect spells, charging into melee with a single heavy heavy hitter or swarming with multiple light-to-medium hitters, and so on...

Well, you can also go medium to hard hitters. Here's a built that hasn't gave me a loss... yet.

2 big (25-30 dmg) hitters
4-5 medium hitters (15-20 dmg) but should be fast (speed 8) if you do not have range.
4-5 fodders
2 cmmdrs so you can break the band into 2 teams

If you have 5 med hitters, it will dish out 100 dmg per round! Plus, it takes 5 hits to let them all run to the exit.
