Wandering Monsters are randomly placed in a victory area. Most common way is to roll a die. Say there are 4 victory areas, roll a d4 or d8 to make is simple.

Drow Outpost has some specifics that Guy Fullerton (Wizards rules dude) clarified on his web page. You can find most of his clarifications on the WoTC DDM boards. They work exactly as described but take some clarification due to weird questions that came up.

Only fliers can move through Pit/Lava Pit squares of their own accord. All normally incorporeal creatures also have flight. Burrowing does not work through Pit/Lava Pit squares as the creature can't burrow through bottomless pit or magma.

Thanks Rob

Can multiple wandering monsters be on the same victory areas? And can multiple plauyers have wandering monsters on the same victory area?

I didnt see any thing on Guys website about the Drow Outpost changes. I did see some questions on the Wizards boards but no changes, just questions about pushback, slide, etc.

It's all random so yes, any amount of wandering monsters from any amount of players could end up on the same victory areas.

Well he clarified on the WoTC boards a 50% rule for pit squares. So only count a pit square as a pit if there is 50% or more of pit taking up that square. I questioned this a few weeks back because there are a lot of areas where the cliff edge is slightly in the square. Just touching a slight area of the pit doesn't incur a DC roll. Only 50% or more.
