I've noticed a favoring of the good alignments in 500pt games lately. Although a few Steel Predators and Beholders show up, I've seen practically zero CE faction bands and very few LE bands. The 500pt game seems to be dominated by Elminster bands, Ghaele Bands, Aspect of Kord bands, Rikka, Maruts, LSDs and Couatls. Of course I am just observing this from the tournament reports here and the few epic games I've seen on Vassal. So if anyone feels I am wrong on this feel free to chime in.

What warbands are dominating the 500pt scene these days?

Do you think CE will get a boost in the next set?

I think CE is by far the weakest faction in the Epic format. Agree or disagree?

I can't answer the first two questions, but I agree that CE is currently lagging behind the other three factions in 500. Nightwalker's no good. Tri-Fomorian's no good. Balor's no good. Huge Red works better in LE. Haven't really looked at epic Death Slaads yet though.

I almost played CE at our last extreme event. The band would have trouble with the 2 huge Dragons or a nightwalker due to high AC's, but in a field heavy with large size and smaller figs including the Epics it would do very well:

Ryld
2 Fomorian
2 Eye of Gruumsh
2 Red Sam
Orc Champ

In a field heavy with beholders you could add in a zombie white in place of a red sam or orc champion. Having 8 solid hitters in an 8 figure format is really nasty.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

This band also rips the archmage bands to shreds. There are too many hitters to focus on. I'd like to see this band against a double Ghaele, it seems to me that it might be possible to hold off the hitters with the clay's so that you can fear them with the ghaeles.

Where I play, almost all the bands are beholder bands in 500. However those who annot afford 3/4 beholders use various warbands, some double behlder and hitters. Also i See Le in quad chraal and double steel predator. King snurre is used alot.
The rest i have seen is one double death salad, one epic justice, one GFD and tyranosaurus, one nightwalker, one single red dragon double zwd one formorian band, and 1 storm giant band.
MOstly I see evil bands.

So far, I agree.

All I can attest to is what I saw at the event I ran. The dual-Ghaele bands did well, the Epic Elminster band did well, the dual Large Silver band did well; Kord was so-so, there were a LOT of Kord bands there and only one did well.

I hope so, but it might not happen until WotDQ.

The last 2 local events were 500 pt Assault, and each had about 12-16 people. I was fortunate enough to win both...the first with LE, and the second with CE.

My LE warband featured a Dark Naga, 2 Beholders, and 2 Gauths. None of the matches were close. Any beholder-heavy 500 pointer should do very well, unless the matchups are unfavorable, so I think LE has a strong contender.

As many have said, CE lags a little. However, I won with a Huge Red Dragon, non-Epic Balor, Hezrou, Cursed Spirit combo, with a ZWD for anti-Beholder love. Basically the idea was to pile up a whopping -8 to enemy Morale Saves to pull off some nice Enslave action with the Balor. It only worked in 1 game, where I enslaved another Balor, against the guy who took second place. He was also running a Huge Red with his Balor. My first 2 matches both featured Beholders, but the ZWD was able to tie them up long enough that my Dragon did crippling damage to the rest of the warband.

So, while Elminster and Epic Kord (and to a lesser extent, Epic Rikka) are popular now, I think there potential for Epic love in all the factions.

What else was in this band? Naga, 2xBeholder, 2xGauth is only 285 points, so you have another 215 to go and only 3 figures to do it with. It could play very differently depending on what else you used.

Also, were you playing on Lost Temple, or using the new epic maps? If Lost Temple was your only map choice, I can see where Beholders and Gauths would work pretty well.

I wouldn't think this band (at least the portion that you listed) would fare very well on the new maps, since 50% of them (1 of 2) block line of sight pretty severely. Against, say, the double Ghaele bands, you're basically hosed, since they're nearly guaranteed to use the Hellspike map, and more than likely going to win initiative and choose it. Smoke halfway across the board + slow Beholders + slow Gauths = really bad matchup, especially when you're fighting Ghaeles who CAN target you back, and block most of your effects with Clay golems if you manage to get far enough though the smoke to start targeting something.

Let's see...I had:
Lord Soth
Dark Naga
Beholder x2
Gauth x2
Thaskor
Destrachan

It was actually a non-sanctioned type tourney where you could bring any map you wanted. I chose Drow Enclave, and was lucky enough to win map initiative in every match.

Basically the idea is to clear their fodder with Soth and the Gauths. With 10 activations and good fodder clearing, you should easily get early activation control. Then use the Thaskor, Soth, and Destrachan to block/slow the enemy as long as possible, while the Beholders and Gauths pepper them with Naga enhanced eye rays. If their creatures are susceptible to paralysis and/or petrification, they'll eventually fail a save.

Over the course of the tourney, I petrified a Storm Giant, and undamaged Trumpet Archon, and an Epic Kord.
