Ok, just continuing the Warband Building Challenge that Kypdurron started a week ago. Being the winner (not really a big deal as there were too few votes, me edging IanB by a vote of 5-3 [:p]) of the first one, I get to start the challenge.

Kyp started his challenge with a set of figs. I'll do something different.

Earlier today, a newbie player who didn't have any minis yet wanted to know if he could build a competitive 8-fig limit 200 point warband with any of the existing available sets (Aberrations to Underdark) that has a good chance of winning against any of the established bands.

I immediately said yes, and pointed to the LE faction. But here's the catch, he doesn't like to play LE. It just doesn't appeal to him (I did say he was a newbie, right?). So as I contemplated with this, it finally occured to me that this would make a good warband building challenge. I already have a couple of builds to suggest to this kid, but I'd like to hear yours.

Like with Kypdurron's before, just post your entries (maximum of 1 per member). The contest stops once we get around 20 bands, or 48 hours from now (2 days), whichever comes first. Then voting will commence immediately afterwards on a new thread for the next 3 days (giving you an excuse to pad your posts [:D]). Try to be creative and make sure your entry is not too similar (4 or more of the non-fodder figs are identical) with any that has already been posted.

Sorry, there are no prizes, just bragging rights and the opportunity to set the next challenge (yeah, big deal! [)]).

The parameters again:

Build an 8-fig limit 200 point warband that:
a) Has figs only from the following sets: Aberrations, Death Knell, Angelfire, and Underdark,
b) must not be LE, and
c) must have a relatively acceptable chance of beating any top tier band.

The challenge starts now!

*** UPDATE (Closed) ***

No more entries please.

Just kindly wait for the new voting thread that should be up by tomorrow.

No LE?? ouch. That's my specialty.
Let's try:

Justicator
Marut
Half-Orc Paladin
Dwarf Wizard
Maa x3

Is the Justicator allowed?? If so here's the tactics:
Use the Half-Orc to give the marut and Justicator the extra dmg against high level oppoents; Marut- 35 dmg, Justicator- 20 dmg twice and if your lucky you'll be facing chaos so your justicator can do 25 dmg twice. Use the Wizard to hopefully give the marut an extra attack or two on your oppoent. The Maa are your activation control. You can substitute a Dwarf Artificer for the Dwarf Wizard if you want the extra AC bonus, but I think getting that extra attack with the marut could help alot (Especially if it's doing 35 dmg a hit [:D]).

Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos.

Village Priest (angelfire, for magic weapon and bless)
Couatl (Deathknell, do you even need to ask? :P)
Aspect of Kord (Underdark, the primary big beater)
2 Justice Archons (Angelfire, to provide support against high damage bands)
2 Hill Dwarf Warriors (Aberrations, Fodder.)

The Village Priest provies a first round magic weapon on one of the Justice Archons and then a bless second round on everyone else. Couatl = energy resistance + snake's swiftness for the Aspect of Kord. The Justice Archon's block for the AoK and allow for increased hitting power vs. CE and CG hitter bands. The Hill Dwarves are there to activate!

Uhhh, you can't use the Cleric of Yondalla, he's from harbinger.

𖏢] Death Slaad (x2) (Underdark)
⎵] Half Fiend Ogre (Underdark)
⎨] Choker (x2) (Abberations)
⎤] Taer (x3) (Aberations)

It's a variant of dual death slaad band. It's not ideal with the restrictions, but I think it will do alright. The chokers are for extra activations, to somewhat compensate for the pathetic initiative rolls that the slaads will produce. Taers are there for stench, really.

Cleric of Dol Arrah 45
Justice Archon 32
Justice Archon 32
Half-Orc Paladin 48
Loyal Earth Elemental 34
Man-at-Arms 3
Man-at-Arms 3
Man-at-Arms 3

200 points 8 acts...

I suggest buying this band even if he decides to use another because its soooo cheap. not a single rare here.

This is the band i came up with my self and only got to test it a few times, both times i did rather well. So keeping the CoDA behide the loyal earth elemental is the plan and to boost its AC vs evil also healing it when needed makes it a HARD rock. the half orc give the earth more BANG vs high lvl titans, it also works good with archons. And yes, the archcons give you that much more speed to flatin titans or other hard hitters. again the healing by the half orc and the CoDA really is a pain in the arse for your oppeant. also the orc can be used as a hitter if needed because the CoDA will back him up.

no a no rare band i think its decent.

I've played a variation of that.
It did reasonably well (aside from getting disintegrated by a beholder. :P) I am not sure I would take it to a big tournament though.

Some options ....

Mount Up!
Hezrou
Mounted Drow Patrol x4
Orc Skeleton
Bullywug Thug
Gnoll (ab)

Follow the stinky commander and hope he can outlast the opponent.

Drow Skirmish Squad
Ryld Argith
Xendrik Champ x6
Lolth's Sting

Move, shoot and when the time comes swarm and strike. Lots of SR and conceal in this band.

LG Lend-Lease
Couatl
Cleric of Dol Arrah
Rikka
Aspect of Kord
17 points man at arms / hill dwarf / other filler

There are a number of Snake Eyes-like variants that are possibilities. This one doesn't have as much meat as I generally like to see, but it could perform well enough.

Slow but Steady
Half Orc Paladin
Dwarven Samurai x2
Warforged Hero x2
Celestial Black Bear
Hill Dwarf Warrior
Man At Arms

It may take you a while to GET where you need to be, but you should do ok once you get there. It actually could do well in the Musrhoom Cavern with the close victory areas and the fact that the Warforged aren't slowed by the difficult terrain.

One variant would remove one or both the Dwarven Samurai for Loyal Earth Elementals (and moving around fodder). That might merit the use of the BPM instead of the HOP for a commander just so you can get your map choice.

Simple and straightforward...

Half-Orc Paladin
Justice Archon x4
Celestial Dire Badger x2
Monitor Lizard

Like Jos1-1's band, it has no rares, but maximizes the offense. There are certainly some bad matchups, but against high AC foes, you have alot of chances to get through their AC, and when you do hit, you hit for more than they do.

Hezrou/MDP has really poor commander effect synergy, it seems like to me...

Anyway, my stab at it, which is a slight variant on a band I've been playing around with lately (had to take out the azers!):

Justicator x2
Githzerai Monk
Half-orc Paladin
Lantern Bearer
Hill Dwarf Warrior
Man at Arms x2

Why is that Ian? In fact, I think it has EXCELLENT commander effect synergies ... the MDPs can move from behind the Hez to attack, then move back ... possibly hitting the figures basing the Hez with the CFx, stench and flanking all in effect.

32 Cel Pegasus
28 Griffon
19 Spirit folk Fighter
15 Satyr
6 Monitor Lizard
5 Timber wolf

Let me see...

Valenar Commander (38 pts)
Half-Elf Bow Initiate x2 (86 pts)
Goliath Barbarian x2 (62 pts)
Wild Elf Raider (6 pts)
Elf Warrior x2 (8 pts)
TOTAL: 200 pts, 8 activations

The Valenar lets the HEBIs and Elf Warriors target anything, while the Goliaths dish out melee damage. The Elf Raider can grab tile points.

are you allowed to builded more then one warband?
would seem alot easier to limit it to only one warband perperson.

How long will this second challenge go on before voting?

Yeah Chris just got carried away and submitted 4 warbands. He'll have to revise and choose one or my guess is he won't care about entering and just want to give the newbie some warband ideas. I like the Hezrou/MDP combo though I'd be inclined to go with a ZWD or Hunched Giant and another commander.

Anyway here is my take:

Drow Arachnomancer
Yuan-Ti Abomination
Yuan-Ti Halfblood X2
Swarm of Spiders X2
Spider of Lolth
Gnoll Skeleton

Mostly trying to be original here as I know it's not perfect Tier 1 hardcore but it can be fun.

Ok thought I'd go for something a bit different.
Its really just a CE Beater band but without the orc champ red sam or ogre Ravager or tiefling captain. lol so not really at all.

Anway this is it I call it NG TRIFECTA as in Next Generation

Orc Sarg 24pts
Rask 52pts (brought in by orc sarg)
Draegloth 56pts
Draegloth 56pts
4x Gnoll 12pts

200pts 8 activations

Main tactics, run at the enemy Hit them first and harder than they can hit you. Use the 3 hitters melee reach 2 to get first hits in.
Protect the commander he is squishy and pray lol. There is a lot of damage dealing potential here. Don't laugh it could work!

I have one that I have playtested:

Couatl
Iron Golem
Marut
Dwarf Artificer
---------------------
Tactics:

Couatl hangs back and provides his ability (even to the Iron Golem)

Iron Golem ranges up front as far as possible so people will concentrate upon him.

Marut is the one you want to use with Snake's Swiftness . .

Artificer is the only fig in the game that can turn down the volume on the Iron Golem (rust construct).

Cleric of Dol Arrahh 45
Justice Archon x2 64
Couatl 42
Gold Dwarf Soldier x2 34
Lantern Bearer 12
Man at arms 3
200 pt. 8 activations.

There is synergy, a back-up commander, good utility between the CoDA, LB, and the Couatl. The fearless-under-command Justice Archons serve as the main deterrent while they are backed up by fearless Gold Dwarf Soldiers. I think it has potential.

Well Let me take a stab at it also.

Coutl 42
Rikka 31
Gith Monk 34
Gith Monk 34
Village Priest 21
Dwarf Wizard 21
Lantern Bearer 12
Carvan Gaurd

Monks tag team enemies beater. 20 auto +stun X2 plus another possible 20

Coutl supports the monks with his resistance.

Rikka Grabs victory and commanders

Wizard B slaps whoever

Lantern Bearer Deals with LE high ac help and also negates conceal :)

Gaurd grabs victory or gets squished He is a Star Trek Redshirt

Priest prays and uses spells

Wti the restrictions it should work well and is not rare intesive so a starting player can get a good feel for how things work and some good pieces for later anyway.

Wow, wasn't expecting a lot of entries this soon, and quite a number from established skirmish players no less.

Ok, I won't be putting a limit to the number of entries anymore, but the submissions will still end on time.

As expected, many LG bands showing up. Too many.

After this post, I will only accept CG and CE entries. C'mon people, be creative and crafty.

And I repeat, only 1 submission per member.

No LE?? Wha..?!?!?!?!

Took me a while to come up with a band, outlawing my faction threw me for a loop.

So, let's get away from LG with a little old-school chaos.

Ryld 55
Frenzied Berserker 52 107
Frenzied Berserker 52 159
Crow Shaman 26 185
Wild Elf Raider 6 191
Xeph Warrior x3 9 200

Tactics? Advance under cover, quickly, and then smash your opponent to smitherines. Cat's Grace Ryld if you get a chance.
Despite the radical changes to the metagame, it's still tough to get through two Berserkers, backed up by Snake's Swiftness, and still have enough left over to reliably take down Ryld.

Hold Ryld back, rushing in to flank with a FB when it can finish someone off. Use fodder as flankers and cheap shileds against Gauths and the like.

Champion of the Prestige Class where mages focus on telekenesis and start throwing people into the ceiling and uber stuff like that.

Standard Builds should still be reasonably competitive.

Berserkers
Frenzied Berserker x 3
Cleric of Garl Glittergold
1 Elf Warrior
3 Xeph

Ryldfecta
Frenzied Berserker x 2
Ryld
Rikka
1 Elf Warrior
2 Xeph

Let it be.

I cant believe no one has said something like this so far!

Tri Slaad
Death Slaad x3 (Launch your Hammers and then try and rend!)
Mounted Drow Patrol (Sit back, run up, smack, run back. Rinse and Repeat!)
Taer (Stench, save lowering)
Gnoll x2 (Ab) (Your basic CE fodder replacement for the Orc Warrior)

Play with drow outpost. You have a reasonable chance of getting it on initiative, then block the bridge with the ZWD, and mounted attack over the bridge and back.

Ryld Argith
Aspect of Kord
Frenzied Berserker
Satyr
Elf Warrior
Xeph Warrior x 3

No soft targets for GAS to assassinate, and with countersong from the satyr as an extra help in that matchup. The AoK can force morale on mostly any hitter, and winning crucial initiatives should be no problem. You also have a reasonable number of eggs in the chaotic matchups, although triple berserkers and quad CE would still be bad matchups. A large number of Justice Archons would be troblesome as hell, but luckily people mostly seem to be playing either titan builds with a couple JA's for support, or GAS, when they play LG.
