| Hello all!
Following on from Kyp and Nix's Warband Building Challenge, here is ... a Warband Building Challenge!!
Ok, so last time Nixlord cut my beloved LE from the running, so this week I'd like to give 'em a little love.
I'm a big spellcasters fan. I see a lot of [understandable] Archmage love, but let's do something a bit different.
So, this week's build rules:
- 8 figure limit - 200 points - current rules [speed 2 still exists, etc.] - Band must include a Red Wizard, Elminster or Mordenkainen. - One band per person
Post your bands below and feel free to add any thoughts you have. I think this will probably be a Nixlord-style 'battle of the bands', but that's if I can figure out how that sorta thing works [:)]

| Hmmmm, I was about to take a nap when I saw you finally put the challenge up.
I might as well post my entry before someone posts a similar band.
Spellslingers, eh? I'm really tempted to go with an Elminster + Mordenkainen build (hehe), but that might just be too foolish (but fun [:p]).
I'll go safe (using your beloved faction [)]) with this then:
LE - Mordenkainen Mordenkainen Helmed Horror Duergar Champions x2 Snig the Axe + 3 Goblin Skirmishers 200 Points, 8 activations
Pretty much a straight forward caster+bodyguard band. The Helmed Horror and Duergar Champs protect Mordy and backup commander Snig. Play is basically using the spell immune Helmed Horror as a frontliner/bait/lightning rod, cutting down opponent's activations, and finally using a well timed empowered cone of cold or lightning bolt against critical targets. Helmed Horror and Duergar Champs mop up afterwards while Mordy plays keep away.

The idea is to avoid the magic immune blockers (Golem, construct) and kill the 60+ point MU commander. The YM and monks kill the commander, and the filler stays back w/ Mordi. After killing the commander, just stay alive and win on VP. (Not too hard to do at this point, as Mordi kills any filler near him and has his spell support and the fast, hard smacking monks to aid him).
P.S. I love this format! Lets keep it coming.

| Alright. Spell-A-Casters.
LE - Red Wizard Rumble Fest
Red Wizard- 63pts. Helmed Horror- 45pts. Efreet- 42pts. Bright Naga- 15pts. Snig The Axe- 20pts. 3x Goblin Skirmisher- Free Minions. Blue- 5pts. 2x Dekanter Goblin -10pts. 200pts. 8(11!) activations.
Ok. Game plan as follows.
Use Helmed Horror to run interference, whilst your goblins, snig and blue take out all of their activations, aided by the spell slinging of the Efreet, and Red Wizard.
I wish i could have found better Synergy for the Fire themed band, maybe if Dekanters resisted 5 Fire instead of Cold. Anyway, i liked the Synergy of the Bright Naga and the red Wizard, and the Efreet getting his spells boosted a bit before sliding out into combat, to watch a Fireball burst around him and Helmed horror (to no effect on them of course!) sounded gravy to me. i say use this warband, beat down their activations, out activate them, and victory is yours!

You can shoot all of your spells through a certain allie(s). Use the Skeletal Dwarves to make a half @ss wall around mordy so your opponent has to make an effort to get to him. The Helmed Horror and the Iron Golem are the big beaters and your crowd control, keeping the enemies away from mordy as he shoots his spells off through them. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. Yep...I know its low on activations, but here's the theory. It really is designed for a timed format. 1x Red Wizard 2x Efreet 2x Deathlock 4x Blue 3x Goblin Skirmisher (or Warrior Skeleton, take your pick)
The assignment was too vague, so I figured I'd throw in all spellcasters (minus the 3 skirmishers), make it a real challenge.
The efreeti are actually credible melee threats, and I love the fact that with Reach 2, you can choose between attacking or the 20 point scorching ray.
In my opinion, 2 Deathlocks are better in many instances than the Kobold Sorcerer. You spend an extra 4 points, but you get some melee/speedbump viability. AND, perhaps more importantly, you get an extra activation, and an extra magic missile each round--that lets you load up the damage early. Let's face it, by round 3 or 4, you're going to be in melee combat anyway. Also, cause fear has bailed folks out of some odd situations, and is a very useful spell.
The Blues are there to pick off fodder and tile grabbers. With 4 of them, you can bet that a low level creature is going to take 10 damage. Pick off those orc warriors, wolves, and wild elf skirmishers with impugnity. DC 13 really isn't that bad for a 5 point creature, and with 20 chances at it, you can bet that a few bigger creatures are going to fail it as well.
I enjoy the opening round potential of a minimum salvo of 70 points of damage (not even counting the blues), followed by another round of 60 points.
Fire resistance and spell resistance stink, but I'm guessing they would against any of the other bands as well. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Now with micro scrubbing bubbles. Not a bad build, Kiddoc. But you might want to consider the Kobold Sorcerer again. Psistef's requirement is for an 8-fig build limit, not 12. [:p]

| Red Wizard Iron Golem Helmed Horror Deathlock Azer Raider Duergar Warrior x3
So it is extreeeeemely vulnerable to commander assassination, but the Iron Golem and the Helmed Horror can do a good job of making that difficult against most warbands. It is fun to put the Golem on the bridge of the Drow Outpost and lob fireballs across the gap. The job of VP grabbing may fall to the HH. I actually used this band in a tournament and was doing very well with it until I miscounted and the RW got whacked in the finals. It was very fun to blast away with the red wizard. I got off all of his big name spells in all but one of the games I played.

| Mordenkainen Red Samurai Xen'Drik Champion X2 Mounted Drow Patrol Abyssal Maw X2 Taer 200pts, 8act.
A variety of beating and area effect damage as well as ranged threats. The opponent's beaters are the ones that will be closing to melee because the Mordy's Doggy will hurt most tech pieces too quickly. Putting a good front up with the Red Sam and Xen'Driks is a possiblity. Another option is to swap the Red Sam or Xen'Driks for a ZWD (blocker extraordinare) and add tougher filler. For CE this is something of a defensive warband but everything is fast enough that you should be able to get to a victory area and then defend from there.

| Mordenkeinen Standardbearer Justice Archon Justicator Gold Dwarf Soldier x2 man at arms Hill dwarf warrior Drow Outpost 200 pts. 8 activations
The justice archon provides a nice lightning immune anchor for Mordenkeinen's lightning bolts as well as a solid beater against low AC/high damage chaotics and a fearless blocker against higher AC bands. The man at arms and hill dwarf warrior provide activations and a targeting aid for the cone of cold that won't be missed too much. The justicator is able to hit high AC targets and provides a high AC blocker. The gold dwarf soldiers can both block and hit (as long as the enemy doesn't have too high of an AC; the standardbearer both strips Coatl resistances and extends Mordenkeinen's commander effect (enabling you to put it where it needs to be without risking Mordenkeinen too much or limiting his movement, which he may need to properly target his spells).
The drow outpost offers a choke point that can be exploited to block access to Mordenkeinen while still allowing him line of sight to cast spells across the chasm. Also, flight allows the justice archon to move across the chasm to provide a flank and the justicator can fly as well or attack across the chasm with melee reach if he needs to.

Red Wizard (63 pts) Chraal (35 pts) Efreeti x2 (84 pts) Blue x2 (10 pts) Duergar Warrior x2 (8 pts) TOTAL: 200 pts, 8 activations.
The Red Wizard's CFX increases the damage that the Blues and Efreetis dish out when they cast spells, plus you have three large bases to guard the squishy Wizard. The Chraal helps out incase you run into anything that is resistant to fire, and the Duergars serve as decent fodder pieces.
Just pray that you don't run into any Couatls... | | Check out my DDM Blog: http://scifirules.livejournal.com "I will pay my dues when you send me my tusks!" -Strong Bad Champion of Chainmail Equivalencies | Knight of Efficient Fodder WotDQ Called Shot: Large Green Dragon (VINDICATED) | Blood War Called Shot: Large Brass Dragon | Unhallowed Called Shot: Skeletal Troll

Anything in the band can serve as a targetting device for the fireballs other than the Knight (who's mostly there as a bodyguard for the RW anyway). The horror can do the same for the lightning bolt. Only one other spellcaster to take advantage of the RW's commander effect, but he's got plenty of attack spells. I'd expect this band to die horribly against a fireproofed band, however. There's enough hitting power to back up the high damage spells of the RW, but not enough to do anything if the fire damage (every fig but the Knight relies on fire) is negated.

DEATH BY THE MAW Red Wizard 63 Cultist of the Dragonx2 58 Dueregar Champ x2 66 Deathlock 12 DROW ENCLAVE
199 points, 6 activations
The point of this warband, get into the summoning cirle, summon ridiculous amounts of abbysal maws, out activate and all that good stuff, and try and do some serious damage. It worked pretty well in casual(and better when i actually had the side with the circle) but again, its competitiveness is not likely good.

Use the miners for fireball targets if you can, setup with the Horror up front a bit to keep you out of fireballs. Move forward methodically, but dont be too slow, as your opponents all have spells too. | Mordenkainen Death Slaad Red Samurai Cursed Spirit Abyssal Maw x2 Troglodyte Orc Brute
I went with Mordy because I feel he's the best of the three spellcasters. Death Slaad brings Chaos Hammer for opposing lawful bands, and the threat of Deadly Rend for the low-AC chaotics. He'll also be good for flying in after those wizards that are trying to hide. Red Sam provides hitting power and a nice breath weapon. The rest is tech/fodder. But good tech/fodder. :) | | Champion of Gnomes

| Mordenkainen (69pts) Iron Golem (61pts) Skullclan Hunter (36pts) Dwarf Wizard (21pts) Hill Dwarf Warrior (4pts) 3x Man-at-Arms (9pts)
Go for point-denial tactics, if possible. Mordy will die before the game end so it is important for Mordy and Iron G to deal as much damage as possible. Hopefully the rest of the band will be able to pick up the pieces[)]

| Ok, given that you KNOW the opponent will have a high priced, reasonably squishy commander (or not squishy, but no spell resistance -Elminster), I think a good player goes with a
Guerilla War:
Archmage (assassin, plain and simple. 50% dismiss vs steel preds) Mordenkainen. The guy at the back running away and guarding tiles, basically trying to stay alive. Rikka: The replacement killer. Or replacement healer. Or high-priced tile grabber later in the game... Map: Hellspike 3 acts, 198 points.
Why I would postulate that low acts can be forgiven in this band: The band is highly mobile (with waylay and DD) and can often choose the site/time of engagement anyway.
Why it might not be forgiven: In games where a quick assassination is not possible, the other team is likely to trade fodder for tilepoints, putting you in a hole. This could necessitate addtional risk to the band.
