When you ask which works better, what do you mean? Do you mean, against a field in a tournament, against certain kinds of bands?

I'd rather have the Justice Archons. It spreads your eggs into a few more baskets.

As an aside, I'd NEVER run a Marut band without a Standardbearer. Otherwise, Gith Monk/Young Master warbands are virtually an auto-loss for you.

The second one...

Three commanders in a first one is too much.

I am still looking at the Standardbearer, what makes it worth putting it in a band for you?

I have to question why you think that it is an auto loss when giths have a very difficult time hitting maruts you have to roll a 16 or better to hit them, he cant be criticalled, stunned or flanked either

They can't be critted or stunned, but they can be a victim of the Gith Monk's Unavoidable Strike, and you can declare a stunning attack even though they can't be stunned (Guy has ruled on this several times). So, with the Young Master's commander effect, each Gith Monk does 20 points of "unavoidable" damage to the Marut. 4 Monks kill it outright (80 damage). 3 Monks and a Couatl mean that you only need 1 Lesser Sonic Orb to get through its spell resistance (60 unavoidable damage, 15 sonic orb).

The standardbearer's countersong removes the Young Master's Commander Effect, dropping the "unavoidable" damage down to 10 per monk.

Also, there's nothing special about Constructs that prevents flanking.

Young master can move reasonably close to the battle because we know he can't be based by a marut. The commander effect still works on the Gith Monks against Marut. With three Giths, that's still 60 auto-damage against the marut. One more successful attack kills it. The fact that marut isn't affected by stun doesn't mean Young Master's commander effect won't work. It works regardless, granting it +4 attack and +10 damage. The Giths would need to roll 12 or better to do 20 damage, finishing off the final 15 hp.

Yep, if you run eitehr, get that Standard Bearer in there. You need the "third commander" because the Couatl really isn't one for things like initiative and even morale on Hill Dwarves. Don't look at the Couatl like a primary commander, because it simply isn't one without "help".

Actually, you could probably get away with the coatl as the primary commander if every non-fodder piece is fearless or bold. (Marut+justice archons looks solid). Initiative will be painful (though against a young master or dark naga, you'll still win a reasonable amount (between 30 and 40%) of the time, you can only expect to lose every initiative if you're up against Ryld, the ghaele, CoDA, etc). Even without a commander rating, hill dwarves have a decent morale save for fodder and it's not like they're going to route off the board without getting a second or third shot at the save.

With the popularity of GAS bands, I'm thinking countersong is more and more critical and a inexpensive piece like the standardbearer is a excellent choice.

As for which band I'd choose, I'd have to agree with not having all my eggs in one basket. The Justice archons are great support pieces and great backup for your Marut.
