| Epic Kord Ryld Rask Archmage Crow Shaman Wand Expert Satyr MAC
I lost to an LE band that had no Huges or Epics.
My biggest drawback is that the bulk of my offense rests on the shoulders of a relatively weak Kord. I wouldn't call him squishy, exactly, but with a buffed AC 23 and Conceal, he's still pretty easy to hit in Epic. I also made placement mistakes that I wouldn't necessarily repeat: for example, my AM was routed after laying a sword on Soth and retreating... too bad the Beholder could make that autodamage disappear every round.
My other weakness is that I have too much tech... the Wand Expert didn't contribute as much as I would have liked, and I'd probably drop him in favor of an Elf Pyro or another beater.
If you took this band back to the drawing board, how would you change it?

| You already know that you have too much tech. That's where you went wrong. Relying on AoK even in Epic form is a bad idea. I would have at least played Epic Rikka along with him. This would require you to drop the Archmage but I honestly feel in Epic that you'd need at least 2 Archmages to be effective with one. In part simply because of Beholders as you might have found out. I'd go with this:
Epic AoK Epic Rikka Ryld Moon Elf Fighter Crow Shaman Wild Elf Raider X3

| From a pure build standpoint, I don't see any particular fatal flaws in this. The Soth/Beholder may just be a bad matchup. The mistakes that you mention in using it may have made all the difference. Every inflict wounds that the Beholder used on Soth was one it wasn't using on your guys. I was pretty afraid of the Epic Kord when I put together my last warband for Epic. There ended up being more variety than I thought and so there was only one at the tournament and I didn't have to face it. I do know that it ended up getting killed or routed in every match that it played, except for the one with the new player and the hastily built warband. I wonder if Epic Kord wouldn't do better in LG with a Couatl and a CoDA to protect it and boost its morale saves. The healing is nice and you still have snakes swiftness. You also have room for lots of other fun things, like and Epic Rikka.
When you ask us to take it back to the drawing board to change, what bits do you want us to leave intact?

| The match was played on Hellspike, so the Beholder was never anything more than slide/heal support for his team.
I'd like to have one playable CG Epic band, and I like Kord's damage output. He works so much better with Improved Initiative, and I like the Eladrin but can't see myself using a creature with a 1:2 hp/cost ratio. Hence Ryld. It needs another beater, and the FB's attacks are unreliable in Epic, hence Rask. Ranged support is always a good idea, so Archmage and Wandy. Tech support for beaters is good, so Wandy, Crow, Ryld. Pipes and Countersong really help out, so Satyr.
I think I'd keep Kord and Ryld, and scrap everything else. I really like the idea of bringing Epic Kord (and Epic RIkka?) into LG with Couatl and CoDA... in fact, this may be better than building a CG band around him.
Either way, I'm likely to run the LE band I got beat with at our next tourney. It has a perfect balance of tech and beats.

| After I made the Couatl suggestion I put together a band on that idea with Couatl Cleric of Dol Arrah Epic Kord Epic Rikka Standardbearer Dwarf Wizard Dwarf Artificer Royal Guard
It is still tech heavy, but between the Slapping Hands (DC20) of the Dwarf Wizard and the snakes swiftness, the two Epics with have lots of attacks each round. If that seems too much tech you might drop the Artificer.
To build around Epic Kord and Ryld in CG consider Epic Kord Ryld Epic Rikka Crow Shaman Wizard Tactician- She lets you drop a slapping hand on a commander in the back that Rikka has based for that same trick I described above, only better. That leaves 41 points for you to include a goliath or a pegasus, or Aramil (for the RoE)and a smaller hiiter like a griffon or Xen'drik champion.

| When building an Epic Warband, the first 2 questions I ask are how will it do against a triple Beholder warband, and how will it do against a triple Archmage warband. If I don't have a good answer to those 2 questions, I scrap it.
In your case, you're pretty much doomed against multiple beholders. Half of your spells will be wasted, and you're 1 failed save away from death.
I'd find a way to include a Clay Golem specifically for Beholder Insurance. | | Rhane "The focus is sharp in the city..." Have/Want List Reference thread Avatar Thread

| Since the beholder's eye rays aren't spells I think they should still effect a golem

| This is pretty similar to a band Wayne won one of our local 500 tournaments with, so I wouldn't say that it is particularly weak.
The major difference is basically his swapped Ryld + Archmage for Ghaele Eladrin. Something to consider, as you get the same initative advantage, plus a big heal and a commander effect that has some synergy with epic Kord. | | Anson on WotC boards

| I agree that you have too much tech.
I ran a similiar band while ago and did well.
I believe that Epic RIKKA is a must.
If you brought the Satyr for countersong use VoB improved song and the curse of blades helps.
Drop the Wiz, Tact. and Crow Shaman.
They just aren't effective enough in this venue. To use the Shaman he is to close to Beholders and basing.
I also used and Elminster to team with the Archmage and didnot use epic AoK and think that it was well worth the trade.
That being said I killed A Fomorianx2 Beholder, and Snurre Another band that was slow played Lost to Buhdda but thats a different subject.

When I rolled a crit with the epic Kord on a snake swifness... it meat victory... but... in an envoronnement with so much beholders... playing an epic kord is a gamble... one bad trow... and there you got a beautiful stone... its am hard peace to manoever...

We'd love to have you back, Jake. Actually Ron ran several Epic tourneys in a row. Last week was 100 pt. I think next week is 100 pt. also. The one after that (24th) I think is 200 pt. I'll be going to that one. | | Rhane "The focus is sharp in the city..." Have/Want List Reference thread Avatar Thread
