I am brand spankin new (meaning I just bought my first bosters/starter last weekend and haven't even played a game yet) and I got extremely lucky with my first 3 booster pulls. My first box I got a Balor, my seconf box I got a Hezrou and my third I got a beholder. While it might seem like gloating I am actually really perplexed about which faction to play now. Until I opened that third box i was CE all the way, but now....

Advice anyone?!?!

I suggest you just stick around and read the threads. Each faction has it's strengths and CE's is basically rush in and kill. LE has a bit more finesse with spells and the like, being a more strategic play. LG is very defensive more than anything and has lots of counters for a lot of things. CG is the catch all end all of factions but that usually means it's more expensive. I suggest you get a hold of spoiler lists of each set and all the minis or get a warband generator or two. This way you can check out what all the minis in the game currently do and get a feel for everything. And as I said read all the various threads especially in this forum. It's a great place to learn and develop your DDM addiction... er I mean skills. [:p]

Picking the heaviest packs pays off once again! [:(!]

But what Robbdaman said is very true. Read up on things around here and form your own ideas. Try not to let people tell you which faction to play -- but it also depends entirely on what you've got in your collection.

I used to think that Those lucky histories were false... since i got two balors and a aracnomancer in a row.

The best thing you can do is try play them, then you realize to use them, there are lot of tips but everybody should have his own strategy.

One bit of advice to consider is that although a certain figure may seem powerful, it is what you support it with that makes all the difference. This means looking at what figures have synergy with the ones you have, and considering how easily available such missing pieces are.

For the beholder, some of the best synergy comes with the Dark Naga (who is an uncommon in Underdark and easy to get), and with Lord Soth (an older rare, probably tougher to find). If playing 500 point games, Iron Golems (a rare from Underdark) also work well with beholders.

For the Balor, I'd recommend the Bugbear Champion of Erythnul (a recent uncommon), the Tiefling Captain (a Harbinger uncommon, but not to hard to find), one or two Cursed Spirits (from Archfiends, I think? another uncommon), and a Red Samurai or Ogre Ravager (the samurai being an uncommon and easier to get than the ravager).

Overall, I'd say that if money and availability is an issue, the Beholder is currently the easiest to build around, because the LE faction has gotten some of the best support figures in recent sets, like the Dark Naga. Many of the best CE figures date back to the Dragoneye and Archfiends sets, and may be hard to come by or expensive.

I haven't said much about the Hezrou because of the three, it's the one I have the least experience with, playing myself or being run.

One thing all three have in common is a high point cost. When running any warband with high cost or "titan" figures, the support units you take become even more important, both to augment your key figure's abilities and to protect it from enemy figures.

All the advice above is excellent; I'd suggest in particular checking out the stickied "Toolbox" thread for ideas on some of the best each faction has to offer.

I appreciate the advice and will check out the rest of the forums and resources. Part of the issue for me is that whatever way I choose to go, I will end up selling/trading off the others to minimize my future cash outlay.

Thanks!

If you're hoping to sell some minis to increase your total holdings, then I'd recommend selling all three of those rares. The Balor is not as tough as he looks, the Hezrou has lots of hit points but can't do enough damage to be a threat, and the Beholder's day has come and gone.

Now, admittedly, any one of these pieces might turn out to have some synergy with some forthcoming piece, but, between now and then, you could trade those three pieces for a LOT of very useful skirmish pieces. If your goal is to skirmish, and to skirmish well, and you're on a limited budget, selling or trading those three would net you a lot more flexibility.

(And no, this isn't a solicitation. [:)])
