yesterday i played in a local monthly turny with limited rules.
rule was every peice had to be between 30 - 50 pts. i like these type of formats because they let you use peices that you normaly dont use. last month was no peice higher then 35. so i decided to go with

1 mind flayer 35
5 duagar champs 33 165

this format also would only allow a maximum of 6 activatios because of the point cost. i went 4 and 0 and a draw in the final to my buddie that i already destroyed earlier to split the prize with him.

i faced
ce beater band 1 orc champ, 1 eye, zombie white dragon, bone claw, bugbear champ the only band to kill a peice
then 4 feral minitars, 1 ogre ravanger, bugbear champ
lg band 2 loyal earth elementals, cleric of dol something sorry dont have the card in front of me, dwarf deargent i dont remember the rest of the band

with the mindflayer and the swarm tactics i used when someone failed moral(almost always) they where destroyed by attacks of oppertunity. i lost 1 peice all night. we used maps that was cool to.
what would you have gone with in this type of synerio.

Nice band.

I don't know if this band I am toying with would have qualified:

Raksasha
duergar champ x4
Snig-no he won't
imp-him/her either

I am trying out CG faction lately and would have tried:

goliath barbarian x3
moon elf fighter
evermeet wizard
dire bear

Had you considered Urthok instead of the Mind Flayer? Different possibilities, different weaknesses, and different strengths. Almost exactly the same cost.

Mind Flayer is a better choice. Slightly lower commander rating, but delivers a commander effect that's a much better match to the Duergar (who already have a pretty good attack bonus) and also keeps speed with the Duergar (6). Mind Flayer's big problem is he's soft and using his special ability through the Duergar is not recommended.

Thanks for the memories. :)

urthok was my other choice for a comander but i figured the Duergar already had good to hits, and with the swarming if i could force morales the mind flayers commander effect would greatly increase the chances that they failed. plus the stun cone was an added bonus. had to be careful with it but i used it severasl time to great effect. what i would do is move the mind flayer up front and blast then move a Duergar in between them and him. there was a lot of corridors and hallways so it work out pretty good. the mind flayer was only hit once. and having all those Duergar right behind him gave people something to think about.

duergars are awesome! they are fantastic pieces and very underrated, ive been using the following band in 200 competitively
99 duergarx3
41 dark naga
39 gauth
20 snig
0 snigletsx3
199/9

for your contest i would probably not have thought to run the duergars tho,(it seems that your band was the only band that was strictly between 30-35 points on all figs, were they all supposed to be?) i would have run either

eye of gruumsh
red sam
orc champ x2

or

young master
gith monk x4

or assuming strict 30-35 rules
urthok
chrall x4

I <3 Orcs.... what does that say about me?

the point cost was 30 - 50. the young master 4 monks was my alternate band but i neve3r get to use my mind flayer and these are to types of turnies where you can be more effective with peicecs you dont normally get to use, because of the restrictions it makes bands liek this fun. plus i liked having the underdark themed band it fit well with the maps. hehe
