Turns and Rounds are different.

A turn is a single creature's activation.

A round is where both players roll initiative and then alternate taking phases of two activations each. When all creatures have activated once, the round ends.

See Battle Basics on page 8-9 of the War Drums rulebook.

I get several questions each week where the player's question arose because of their confusion between rounds and turns.

The rulebook does a great job using the two different terms in the correct ways, so we can't really blame the rulebook.

I think the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of us, the DDM community. As a group, we use the wrong terms often, we teach the game to others using the wrong terms, and we end up exacerbating the problem.

Generally, the problem happens when one of us uses "turn" when they mean "round." This has happened in many influential tournament reports and articles.

So, to help eliminate this problem, this thread will serve as a Hall of Shame for the prominent posts & articles where the terms are used incorrectly. This isn't mean to pick on anybody. Some pretty big DDM minds have made the mistake. It's just meant as a playful reminder to use the correct terminology.

D&DM is related to D&D, which has a long history of using the terms turn and round in confusing ways. Many D&DM players are also D&D players, and so that confusion does bleed over.

I still remember when a turn was 10 minutes.

If I was a betting sort, I'd put money on this becoming the equivalent to the "(name) is Correct) signature-quoting people do on the WotC boards. Maybe people will even combine 'em, having both a "GuyF told me I'm right" sig, and a "GuyF called me on my mis-use of Turn and Round" sig quote too.

So instead of being as nice as possible and correcting the poster on his/her error in terminology, the link to the topic gets posted here?

So this will make the player/poster better how?

I don't think guyf will be picking on everyone who misuses it, but those of us who've been around for a while are fair game / open targets.

And when we make mistakes we deserve a bit of shame.

Read his post on the Wizard's boards on the subject. There are WOTC published articles that are incorrect, etc.

It isn't a listing of everyone who made a mistake ... just those supposed experts.

From what I've heard from Guy previously, he's tried correcting people privately, and it doesn't seem to work. Maybe this will...

Oh come on Paul, it's Freakin Funny.

I'm guilty. Heck I bet everyone who played AD&D is guilty. Part of our linguistic programming states that there are ten rounds in a turn. All the new kids are better off because so long as we old foggies don't confuse them they'll settle in on as many as 8/16 turns in a round. See it's simple. [:p]

The Wizard's internal league reports are a recent example where turn was used very prominently instead of round on the WotC site:

Considering how people clammer to get Guy to give them a 'X is correct' on the wizards site, I would not be surprised to see people intentionallystart confusing rounds with turns just so they can get shamed ...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go play a match wheere my creatures will get to activate on a round turn within a turn round.
