| There was never much doubt about it, but in case anyone was wondering, Ian has confirmed that there will be rank-based invitations to the DDM Championships.
That is, just like last year, the top 25 DCI rated players who have not Qualified through the normal tournaments will be invited anyway.

| Hrm. I have heard of some rumblings that some players who are likely to go based on DCI-ranking are thinking of sitting out of the qualifiers this year in order to encourage their own communities. I wonder how prevelant this trend will be.
I know I am not going to do it though, as I want both the free flight, and the fun that is involved in competing in a qualifier (or two.) However, I will happily judge my local qualifier if I end up winning the Buford, Georgia Qualifier. | | I am not gone.

If I can keep up the current pace of 8-18 pts a week, I may not have to go to the qualifier. I'd feel pretty confident at about 32-35, but if I didn't make it, no worries.

| I'll be sitting out of any qualifiers because they're too dang far away! Of course, I'm going to one that's 1,400 miles away...
It's a good thought Jesse. While I want to encourage competition, I wouldn't likely compete anyhow since I'm already aboard the gravy-train to Gencon. No need to take up that spot when I've already got it and the accommodations. I'd much rather see someone that's never been to Gencon (like me 2 years ago) get addicted by witnessing its awesomeness the first time around.
That said, I fully expect most of the best players will be trying to qualify though. It's free swag and airfare if nothing else.

I had asked the question over in teh Q&A thread in general, and figured he'd posted a response, but I don't see one, nor over on the WotC boards...

Not me, though I did consider it after finding out the prizes for 2-4 got seriously nerfed.
Definitely still going to the Colorado qualifier because I want to our numbers to be as high as possible. Plus, it's just so close, and Mark would be sad if I wasn't there. And I can't do that to him.
Still going to Utah because I think it will be fun. A good old fashioned road trip, with the chance to meet a whole new group of DDMer's.
I'll admit, it probably doesn't make financial sense for me to go to a qualifier (unless i win). But then again, it doesn't really make financial sense to spend hundreds of dollars a year on little plastic toys. So I might as well go all out! [:)] | | Champion of Gnomes

| IIRC last year it was the top 25 in the world (constructed) that had not already qualied at a qualifier. I made it w/ a 1792 ranking in the 30s. Perhaps some of you have an answer to my question. If you're ranked in the top 25, thus already getting an invite to the championship, AND you qualify via a qualifier tourny, did you just bump someone else from getting that opportunity?

Felagund has right, and here is another way to think of it. There will be at least 105 invitations to GenCon, assuming no qualifiers get cancelled. 80 invitations will come from the high placers at qualifiers, and 25 will come from rank. (Wizards will also invite a few extra people like European Open top players, past chamsp etc).
If someone could qualify on rank, but gets a Qualifier slot, the same number of people will get invites, but the exact people may change. Heck, one could make the case that someone with a high rank who does not try to qualify is unfairly costing someone who does not live near any qualifiers a chance to get an invite based on rank. (That's not how I see it, though).

Go to www.theDCI.com
You can check on rankings for all the games that the DCI oversee's. If you've set your account up, you can log in from that screen and get a detailed breakdown of your record and rank in all the DDM formats.

There currently 21 scheduled in North America, and 1 in Europe.
So, 88 Invites via Qualifiers
1 for the previous Champ
Top 25 to have not otherwise qualified
The question is will there be any other passes (I'm thinking specifically of Other Champions, i.e. the Limited 05 Champ, the Constructed 04 Champ, etc.)
Looks like 114 possible invites. With a ranking of 140 or so, I too will have to actualy qualify...

| Having played there, and having some of their people play down here, I'll chip in that the Montreal Qualifer will be difficult to win/place. Even prescinding from the quality of their players, the sheer number of participants will ensure a long road. There were 55+ people there last year!

Like i said in my post no way to know... WotC could take the easy way out, Kiddoc is unlikely to tumble out of the Top 25, so he'd end up with an invite anyway.
I'd rather see them invite previous champs every year. I don't see anything wrong with a bigger pool of top notch players.
And of course, it increases the miniscule odds that I get in as top 25 if everything were to play out perfectly...

Thanks for the offensive shot. As I stated before AZ has enough good players that it's not going to be an easy win. Assuming (root word ASSUME) we don't have good players because there's not a lot of DCI events is making an ass of you and me.

With only 8 registered players for constructed events in the entire state, I can see how someone would extrapolate from that information that there isn't a whole lot of tournament experience in AZ. Now whether that information is valid of course, is entirely up for debate.

Robb, do you think the turn out for the Arizona Qualifier will be bigger than it was last year?
It's a rather interesting topic. I'm now kind of curious why people seem to think we're soft out here (this is not meant to be an inflammatory question - really is curiosity). Of course, this is all relative. 'Easiest to qualify' does not necessarily mean 'Easy to qualify'.
I could see UT being rather a tough one if they (the locals) show up in force and both CO and CA (among others) invade (as we are still planning to do).
***
As to the original topic, I am in a position to qualify by ranking. I'd rather qualify though trial of fire, though. I look at the ranking qualification as a back-up plan. You place top 4, you're in. You don't, and you really can't afford to experiment or tank at your normal tournaments. And I'd gladly take a free plane ticket and pass to Gen Con over not getting a free plane ticket and pass to Gen Con. [:D] | | [http://www.hordelings.com/frontend/profiles/profile.php?user_id=22]
