| My son is a very good player and excellent at warband design. Today, I was playing a band that I felt was quite good:
Rakshasa Helmed Horror x2 Chraal Dark Moon Monk Timber Wolf x2 Barbarian Mercenary (just in case Hold Person works)
So, he kicked my butt up and down the King's Road. And then, after I'd been schooled, I played him again, same map, same bands, same starting areas. You'd think I'd have learned.
Nope, he mopped me up again.
Curious what he played?
Here's a hint, the secret tech wasn't obvious.

| Calling it new NOST probably means LG, but how can we even venture a guess without even a hint or two?
Well, Kings Road map has forest, which can be a boon to ranged, and last year's NOST used dual couatl's. So, Dual Couatl + Arcane Ballista? Throw in a warforged scout for VP grabbing, and some melee blockers to protect your core (Sacred Watchers?), and it's off to the races.
So, how far off was I? Probably WAAAY off. | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! (Click link to see current progress!) Uncommon Painting Competition 2 Winner

Dragon Totem hero with melee reach 2 baddies that have more than one attack? You cut down on your opponents attacks by half and you still get the extra attacks yourself.

Thats alot of pts tied up in that, and she still routes just as fast and is easily hit in the forest. If your going to take advantage of the forest you need a very high to hit or an auto hit of some kind, and a high AC yourself doesnt hurt.
Due to Daves flanking question Im wondering if it is a sneak attacker such as the skullclan, as it can sidestep in the forest and still do well. But the limits of the sneak attack in the current environment take me out of considering that.

GOOD guess, actually. Not to mention the fact that even after he's based, he can walk over to where he needs to be without an AOO to release the charge.

| | Actually, now that I think about it, can melee reach 2 attackers even ATTACK in forest terrain? Once they step away, they are likely to no longer have line of sight which means they couldn't attack, right? | | Champion of the Cleric with Raise Dead | |

Right, so then your best bet with the Dragon Totem Hero might be Xen'drik Champion. 24 AC and now it is delivering +10 melee damage. Of course, the extra +4 AC that enemies get has to hurt.
For that reason, I'm thinking that this sooper sekrit warband had to use a special ability or spell of some sort. Use the free back up to blast away... | | Champion of the Cleric with Raise Dead

Can you give us a hint? What faction?
Ok ok. Does the "secret tech wasn't obvious" refer to the fact that it uses blur, or invisibility, or such?
How about CE - HGB and Githyanki Fighter - blur on HGB?
Not too obvious.

| OK - at least this thread has me thinking. Back to Dragon Totem Hero...
Given the wording on the DTH's Cfx, can you attack THEN move 2 spaces? Because then my original strategy stands, just in reverse order. You do a full attack first, then step back. Melee reach creatures can't get you and the enemy will only get one attack in response every time.
If this is the case, DTH + King's Road has just moved to tier-1, in my opinion. | | Champion of the Cleric with Raise Dead

| Wow, you guys sure are eager to get at this!
Now I feel like I'm important or something.
I can say this though, nobody's gotten it yet. That's probably giving away too much already though, given how many posts there have been.
Oh, and I actually have two sons, but only one of them consistently plays DDM. And, worse for you guys, he regularly plays against bshugg and his group (the shuggettes?).[:I]
Alex and I had a little chat today after dinner. He's been playing against these guys quite a bit lately, and he's not going to be taking his NOST with him since he's reasonably likely to go up against them in a couple weeks at the Ypsilanti qualifier.
Heck, I'm thinking I might play his band...
Oh, and someone mentioned Mordy. Alex played a Mordy band at the Midwest Open and did a lot better than was probably expected. He kinda lost his cool after the third match and started playing it too aggressively, but if he'd kept his head (he's only 16) he'd have probably pulled out another win. He was 4-2 at the Grinder last year too.
His Midwest Open band:
Mordy Efreeti x2 Chraal Warrior Skeleton x4
His Grinder band:
Eye of Gruumsh Orc Champion x2 Orc Sergeant Mongrelfolk Orc Spearfighter Mountain Orc Orc Warrior x2 Orc Brute x3
His Midwest Open band was obviously not optimized to face Couatls, but against a lot of other bands it was amazingly good. The Grinder band wasn't nearly as strong as it could have been, but this is what he'd practiced with and what he really wanted to play.
Oh, there are no hints about his NOST in these two bands either.
