Right. It was a chance for the best European players from all formats to thrown down in one big "Tournament of Champions" and was our most "hyped" event. It was incredibly tense playing against guys that had gone pretty much undefeated in sealed, Epic, and constructed (including my finals match--where I played against Marco Moretto who placed 2nd in both Constructed and Epic!!! Yikes.). It was a ton of fun, and the highlight of the tournament from many of the spectators I talked to--we had quite a large crowd.
I have news for the Americans too: the rest of the world is just as good, and our metagame doesn't hold everywhere. I saw some awesome rogue bands show up, and they didn't show up because of a lack of a well defined metagame, they showed up because these players did their homework, and because they knew they were good enough to pilot them to victory.
I was impressed... AWED by the skill level of these players. Beware US competitors, if they show up at Gencon, you'll be getting a run for your money.
Thanks again to Peter Scott (aka Alepup) and Fanboy3 games as well as Wizards for allowing me to participate in such an amazing event. I'm quite humbled!
Stay tuned for tons of pictures (and video!), a tournament report from yours truly, and another report about the "experience" in general.

I think Pawel (winner of the 500) did quite well in the 200 constructed IIRC. He had a very well thought out band for the cup, and even though you'd think Balor, Ravager, Quaggoths was a odd band, I think some people learned the hard way what a crafty band it was.. I however did crap in the 200 constructed (3-3!) and borrowed one of Alepulps bands for the Atlantic Cup.
Bands were (from memory!!)
1) Brian (Kiddoc)- Marut, Couatl, Bodyguard 2) Marco (Nike)- Naga, 3x Horrors, Snig 3) Sam (me)- Naga, Gauth, Chraal, Duergar, Zakya, filler 4) Pawel- Balor, Ravager, MANY Quaggoths ?) Cesare (Orion)- 2x Marshalls, 2x Bezerkers, 2x Greycloaks ?) Peter (Alepulp)- Raka, 3x Horrors DMM? ?) David - Ulmo, Village Priest, 2x Arcanix Guard, Half Orc Paladin, Aramil ?) (?)Death Slaad, 2x Blue Slaad, Tiefling

| I came 6th - beating only Cesare with the 3xHH band. Losing to the Balor and Naga/Snig 3xHH band.
Funny thing was that the matchup I won was the one I expected to lose. Let's put it this way - I know how to win with HHs on the Outpost - even v other HHx3 warbands. I also think I know how to beat the Balor on it with HH - yet I allowed the HHs to fight as individuals and off the bridge. What was I thinking? Having said that - I had a strange run of luck... I tried to hit Snig 3 times with a HH - and rolled 3 x 1.... on the 4th hit he passed morale... However - my strategy was very poor and theirs was very good...
Kiddocs match v David was probably the funniest I've ever seen - they did NOTHING for about 1 hour... then Brian suddenly decided it was time to actually do some fighting and not win on a technicality. 4 attack rolls against the Sacred Watcher - 4 misses later... nothing. Then Ulmo moves up to the centre of the board and replaces the Marut - thus winning the game as the closest to centre high value piece - taking an AOO on the way. Brian pulls back and crits Ulmo....
Ask Brian about the final round in his sealed event - the game was settled in a dramatic style.
I was REALLY impressed by the sportsmanship showed by everyone at the show...
Brian was a GREAT Ambassador for the game and for the US... I hope he'll come back over for the next EU champs | | One of these days WoTC will update their tournament page when I'm in the top 5... they never seem to do when I'm in that bracket :( My Collection My DDM Website And My Trade Refs Be a part of the UK DDM Forum

The reason for one of the Rogue bands (aye! my first round matchup-gag!) is that I accidentally (over a few pints...) let the warband I was playing slip the day before. The very competitive Italians decided that if they got another player (they had 2 in already) in, they'd design the perfect band to beat me (and the other lawful bands they knew were showing up). Hence the 3x Death Slaad warband. 3 Chaos Hammers... ugh. Very, very clever Italians. [:D] | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Now with micro scrubbing bubbles. | As a middling order player in the UK Champions tourny, I have to say that we couldnt have asked for a better event. Peter Scott (Alepulp) deserves super credit for his effort in arranging the tourny.
I also think everyone was very impressed by Brian (Kiddoc) both on and off the board. A better ambassador for the US would be tough to find and clearly a deserving winner of the Atlantic Cup. All nations had strong players and it goes to show that variety in culture brings out variety in warbands.
The main impressive point is the quality of play, even rogue or non-Tier 1 bands were played with much skill and ingenuity.
Cant wait until next EU Champs and now I might even fly to US for GenCon to see how US players handle the EU players. Many more Atlantic cups I hope! In future I also would like to play those outside US and Europe.

| The Atlantic cup games were a great show!
Kiddoc made a good show the whole weekend, judging, joking and telling stories. Seeing him at th gaming table was amazing. He still jests a lot, but i dare call it psycological warfare! When Dario put his 3x Slaad warband on the table EVERBODY agreed that Kiddoc could not win. Dario was ahead on points for some rounds and the Marut-band was spread out to avoid the hammers. Well, Kiddoc let his warband slip over some pints of ale....Dario had won a selection of German beer in the Epic tourney and decided to drink one during the game! Maybe that helped Kiddoc win the game, but his playing skills are awesome!
Dario played well too (despite the beer), but he missed an early chance to hammer Marut, Couatl, Bodyguard AND the Cleric of Order with the possibility to rout the cleric right off the board.
A great game to watch! | | Champion of Tika the barmaid

oh, there's even more than that [)] Dario has been playing his 3slaads band since january, and wanted to play it at the EU championship. Last week we played a couple of games which he lost. So he decided to change his wb with a gith monk band. Everybody told him that was a very good band, but he did poorly at the championship. So when he got the chance to play his loved band he did so! Unfortunately he met Kiddoc! [:)] I was truly impressed by him. He is a great guy and an amazing player! [:O] The Atlantic cup couldn't have a better winner!
I am very happy for having met him and so many other graet players! I look forward to the next EU championship! [:D]

That was it! And my map, obviously, was King's Road.
I owe much thanks to Mike Derry and Jason "Fenris" Lioi for convincing me to play LG. Fenris really hammered home the "make it so they can't hit you" concept and I tweaked it and ran with it. Thanks also to Chris Groves, Dave McKay, Dave Smith, Shawn Daugherty, David Scott, and Peter Scott for helping me test and tweak it against a huge array of metagame warbands. I'll post a tournament report in a week or so after I've had a chance to recover and catch up on work.

Sure is--well, that and the command. Even 5 extra HP can be HUGE when used on the Bodyguard, and thus passed along to the Marut or Couatl.
Also, sure the DC is super low on Command, but with 3 of them, you'd be surprised just what sort of things I've stunned. The really nice thing about it is that you never count on it working, so you never plan for it. Then, when it does work, it's an extra bonus.
In my opinion, the 5 points alone on the bodyguard (making the Marut have a magic 135hp, or the Couatl have a very nice 120hp) make him a far better choice than the other 4 point options. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Sorry Brian, where do you invent this???? The night before the atlantic we are around birmingham and in the casinò (where I lost 35 puond :( ). Anda Dario was with me (and other Italians. | Hehehe. That's what Dario told me jokingly before the game. I was kidding around with him about "did you stay up all night designing that!?!" I had a hard time understanding him, but he told me: "I play this warband a long time, I know it defeat you!" Luckily, I think we have the two of us laughing hysterically about our warbands on video to preserve the humor forever--including Dario whispering sweet nothings to a Mialee before he crits her! (I need to find a place to put all these videos of my Atlantic Cup matches). We both had a good laugh about the contents of our warbands. Especially since I had to publish the contents of my warband for the Cup first thing on Saturday morning. [:D]
It was pretty funny. I asked him if he knew what I was playing and he said, "Yes, we ask you yesterday" and gave me that sly Dario grin. I told him I was wishing he'd play the Beholder + Steel Predator band he brought to the Epic Tourney. [:p]
Since we were just kidding around, it didn't matter to me either way. It was just the random luck of the first matchup, that ended up being a pretty amusing situation. So we went back and forth with each other about which one of us knew we'd be playing the other. He was a ton of fun to play, and I still can't believe I managed to beat that band. He was an awesome competitor. I can't remember the last time I had that much fun laughing with someone during a match. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor.
