I think I'm somewhat sad at the emotional toll that qualifiers has taken on people. Secrecy, purposeful obfuscation, misleading statements, "half-joking" parodies, and stripping entire venues of their DCI history. It's been an odd start to this qualifier season.
Seeing all of this myself Im actually quite shocked at the changes that have occured in the community in just one short year. DCI ratings are being used as mandate to write law for this game. Sure, people dont come right out and say, "My rating is high, dont question me," but if you try to buck the trend you are poked, prodded and guided back toward popular opinion. | | Email | Ebay Feedback Page | Maxminis Referance Thread | Have/Want List

| | What is popular opinion? That Marut/Couatl is dominant? What was popular opinion a week ago? Two weeks ago? I see no mandate of a status quo or prodding going on here. | | I am not gone. | |

Sorry, but I'm not seeing it. If there is this organization of higher ranked players dictating popular opinion, who is in it? Kiddoc and doubt are probably the two most outspoken of the top players (yes, yes, I know neither of you consider yourselves to be top players [:p]), and here they are on different sides of this issue. | | Champion of Gnomes

Yeah I agree 100% there, I do not see that at all. I get Shadowfoxs point that the vibe is a little more competitive than in the past year when he took alot of flak, but I dont see DCI being mandate to write law. Alot of people turn the certain players for advice, but its not all DCI, There are several players whose DCI isn't all that high due to a lack of overall tournaments that when they talk about an issue I listen out of respect for their play and their statments in the past. There are also players with DCIs higher than mine I don't listen too at all. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

| | Right. Bshugg, for example, doesn't have a lot of DCI points thanks to his being more concerned with judging events than playing in them and you would have to be a fool to not listen to him when he talks about the game. You may disagree with him (and I certainly have before), but you should at the very least listen. | | I am not gone. | |

| Im not going to dig deeper into this issue beyond this post because I dont want to be in any more conflicts.
I will say that of course you dont see this attitude on the public forums because the people who act this way know that it would wreak their credibility if they did. Where I have seen this attitude is on vassal while incogneto. Ive seen several times where someone would suggest something and then be brow beaten by people who will go unamed just because the opinion didnt agree with what they thought was right.
Anyway, this thread has been hijacked enough and for the best interest of all Im no longer giong to comment on this issue anymore. I can see Ive already said too much as people dont believe me that this behaviour occurs in more private settings outside of the public eye.
Sorry for the hijack all. Please return to the discussion of finding methods to counter Marut warbands. Hopefully we can find some nice tech to crack his tough shell. [:D]
EDIT: In hindsight, I think saying, "Mandate to write law," was a little more powerful then I intended. Let me rephrase it to, "Dont think they should be questioned."
EDIT #2: Because I cant keep my big mouth shut:
quote: Origionally posted by kiddoc I could go into a LONG diatribe about group dynamics and the power of persuasion in exclusive circles. But I won't bore you. ;)
This is the phenomenon Im reffering too. Kiddoc avoided discussing it for the same reason Im not going into it. Its just going to cause conflict. | | Email | Ebay Feedback Page | Maxminis Referance Thread | Have/Want List

| Heh. Are you refering to the disagreement we had on VASSAL the other day where we had this exact same discussion about whether CE or Marut/Couatl wins? I admit my arguments weren't exactly strong (partially because of the previously acknowledged lack of data) but I think most of my practice partners, "top player" or otherwise would say I have any problem with being questioned or admittating when I am wrong. (As I am, almost as frequently as not.)

As I said in my post, Ive seen people do this and Im not naming any names. To do so would just start conflict I dont want to bring onto our good forums.
I just dont think this discussion is worth having anymore. This poor hijacked thread needs to get back on track. | | Email | Ebay Feedback Page | Maxminis Referance Thread | Have/Want List

| | If you aren't willing to discuss it then maybe you should not have brought it up in the first place. Fair enough. I will not pursue this topic further. | | I am not gone. | |

I didnt. Kiddoc brought it up and I expanded upon it. That was my mistake and I agree I should have taken kiddoc's postion of not talking about it. He's much more intelligent when it comes to social ettiquet then I am. | | Email | Ebay Feedback Page | Maxminis Referance Thread | Have/Want List

| | Well, I for one don't see too much of an issue for any of you to be upset over. Looks like a lot of quick comments and the standard difficulty of reading intentions over the internet. Glad you all have decided not to let this run out of control - I respect all of you, and I don't see any ill intent here. In any case, I think there is a discussion about the composition of the metagame that might be worth having. I'll start another thread on it. | | -DaemonKain Proud Mascot of Team Amish | |

Sorry for one more teansy hijack. I just wanted to insert that after your hiatus Shadow_fox, you have done a great job with your online posts. Its clear you take time carefully wording your remarks to avoid the confusion that comes about from posting on a message board. So much of real life communcation is lost on an anonymous message board. I find that I enjoy reading your posts a great deal. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! Something crazy to try?
Inspiring Marshal 2x FB's Graycloak Ranger (Timber wolf Minion) Mialee Jozan Cleric of Pelor Half-Giant Psychic Warrior??? [What is that you ask? Ghost-Touch!! +11 for 25 magic damage (maybe a commander that can give +5 to damage, would be a solid investment? Not to mention he can give himself DR5 using pp points and can do a powered up +15 acid damage as well - using pp points... hummmm?] | | Winter Fantasy, Wardrums Pre-release Champion

| I had some solid success with this tonight vs. a Marut/Sacred Watcher warband.
Human Blackguard Zakya Rakshasa X2 Duargar Champ X2 Timber Wolf X3
Tore down the Marut fast and made the watchers run like little children. The Zak Raks were the all stars for sure. It worked fairly well against a couple other warband concepts. Probably has bad matchups vs. Dual HGBs but worked well otherwise.
