The Grinder is the name of the tournament that is played on Thurssday at Gencon before the national competition. The top 8(?) of the tournament qualify to play in the national tournament. The Grinder is open to anyone and thus will probably have 100+ players which will require at least 7 rounds of Swiss play and for the top 8 an additional 3 rounds. If there are more than 128 players than there will be 8 rounds of swiss. This makes for a long day and thus how the tournament got its name.

Yes.

I doubt there will be 100 players; I'd bet at less than 80, and I wouldn't be surprised at less than 64 (which is ideal). Last year there were 56.

And how. Last year we were in there for about 12 hours.

They are called by many names Hoagies, Submarines (or Subs), and/or Dagwoods are all a popular name for these.

They tend to be meat(hot or cold) piled with veggies and/or sauces to make for various flavors, between two or more pieces of bread... my favorite is meatball.

As to when... well that all depends on you. They are pretty much available whenever you are hungry.

I'm surprised to read that there were only 56 in the grinder last year. I always picture them like the rooms at the world series of poker where there is an enormous ballroom filled with hopeful players.

That's what a Magic event is like, and what I think WotC wanted DDM to be like, and what I think they think Dreamblade will be like.

A grinder is 8-12 hours of the most hideous odor you will ever smell, stress that compares to preparing for a PhD defense, fatigue similar to that gained from your first day at boot camp, and frustration that is only ever seen at large family gatherings.

Sounds like fun.....even though I only began playing a month ago and have only played in 3 tournaments I think I'll give it a shot. I'm sure it will be a learning experience!
