Feel free to comment.  I'm thinking this might be a fun twist on Assault.

You and What Army?
DDM Skirmish Constructed Alternate Scenario
Suitable for both 200 and 500 point play

This scenario uses the same general rules as the standard assault rules. One important change is made, however. Victory points for occupying a victory area are granted to the player with fewer pieces on the board at the end of the round. If at the end of a round one player has 8 pieces on the battle map and the other has 7, then victory points are awarded to the player with 7 figures, but only if that player has a piece on a victory area (and all the other conditions are met, if there are other conditions). If each player has the same number of figures, then, obviously, neither has fewer figures, and so no one is awarded victory points that round.

To be clear, here are some qualifying notes.

Some figures do not count toward your figure limit:

  1. Any creature with Waylay that has not yet entered the skirmish

  2. Any other creature that has not yet entered the skirmish (such as the Xill)

  3. Any creature that has been eliminated, even if it remains on the map (such as a creature that has been turned to stone or that has been enslaved)

All other creatures do count toward your figure limit, including:

  1. Figures that are asleep, helpless, or otherwise rendered somewhat inoperative

  2. Creatures that are confused, regardless of which player last controlled them

  3. Creatures that have been summoned

  4. Creatures that have spawned in some other way (Horde Zombies, Imps, etc.)

  5. Creatures that have entered via commander effects (such as those created by the Lich Necromancer's commander effect, or the Balor's commander effect)

  6. Each member of a squad (i.e. Stirge) counts as its own figure

The trick is to either have the same number of activations as your opponent, so as to deny your opponent the victory points, or to have fewer activations, but only by enough so that you aren't out-activated into a dangerous place. Activation control is still viable—just ask those who play Snig or Graycloak Rangers. But, having too many activations could be a penalty (unless you can use those extra activations to prevent your opponent from getting figures onto victory areas).

If your band has been reduced to one or two very sturdy pieces that are fighting from a victory area, your band will probably be denying your opponent's band its own victory points, making the fight all that more aggressive on your turf.
