| Round 3 is up! A lot of really strong bands out there! Who has the better semi final games? NFL or WBC! In match one we have P and A going at it. After both dominating their last round they face off as the two juggernauts of the week with a classic Clash of the Titans match. On the other side K or N are closely matched as one titan band versus a strong beater combination of Tordek and Vlaakith. Vote who you would like to send into the finals. You don’t have to be a contestant to vote. It the words of Puff Daddy, " Vote or Die!" Match 1: P. Marut - 74 Marilith - 73 Mind Flayer - 35 Mialee, Elf Wizard - 6 Man at Arms x3 - 3(9 total) Mongrelfolk - 3
Map: Hellspike
Strategy: This warband has two solid beaters that both have blindsight, DR 5, and spell resistance. On Hellspike, the blindsight should give them a solid edge, allowing them to use their melee reach 2, even while in smoke. In general, the strategy will be for Mialee to give magic weapon to the Marut and to lead with whichever titan is best suited for standing in front. Thus, against fire damage or lightning damage, Marilith should lead the charge. Against someone trying to do morale tricks (Orc Wardrummer, Mind Flayer, Purple Dragon Knight as an example), lead with the Marut. The Mind Flayer can send his cone through the Marut safely and every effort should be made to use a stun cone every round. Also, the M@A and Mongrelfolk can be used as cone aiming points and should be (having little other use). One M@A or mongrelfolk can get first turn tile points if correctly placed in the 2x2 starting area, and this should be attempted if possible.
Specific Strategies: Archmage: It is possible for there to be a commander 7 Archmage band. SR will help a lot here, but even one sword could spell doom for the Marut. Best strategy here is to focus on the support and only waste time with the AM if he becomes a "reasonable" target. Letter C: The only titan at C is Centaur Warhulk. Still a Centaur Warhulk with a Crow Shaman, Couatl, and Cleric of Dol Arrah (most likely on Drow Outpost) is fierce. Be VERY wary of the whirlwind and charge and try to flank the Warhulk to take out the back field as quickly as possible. Dual Titan: There are a number of possibilities (AoM & AoK, FGFP & AoK, HGB & HGC, etc.). Stun cone is the difference in these battles. Try to get it off on both titans. In general, one should fail a save, and that should swing the battle.
A. blue 5 crow shaman 26 duergar champ 33 elf warrior 4 fire giant forge priest 84 green spawn sneak 6 healer 12 inspiring marshal 29 map: mushroom cavern
strategy is use crow shaman to beef up ac on giant and doogie, maybe marshal and elf warrior (mainly for ranged bonus). sneak for victory area points, blue can have a chance for 5 damage each turn for support from the back, fire giant moves into battle and gets SS from crow shammy, duergar finds a way to fit into the battle, possibly going around to opponents back lines. healer stands next to FGFP and heals. Elf warrior might move away to shoot at their victory area fodder, possibly with blue as well. marshal GMA is ussed at critical time to get the 2 hitters into the right spot to kill, and with melee reach 2 and cleave with a 30 damage attack on FGFP you can get into some nice spots. Crow shammy w/ FGFP should be near 90 damage a round and if he cleaves on his turn and on shammy's turn that would be 150 damage a round, then doogie as a back up hitter means massive damage output. Chastise spirits can be used on SWarm.
Match 2: K. Crow Shaman Dragonmark Heir of Denieth Elf Warrior Fire Giant Forgepriest Greenspawn Sneak Healer Inspiring Marshal Jozan, Cleric of Pelor 199 points Map: Drow Outpost Strategy: Use GMA (if needed) to get the Fire Giant up to the choke point on the bridge. Dragonmark Heir will make the Fire Giant immune to Cold, as well as provide his nice bodyguard ability and potentially moving to provide a cover bonus as well. Crow Shaman can buff the AC of the Forgepriest and give extra attacks from Snake's Swiftness. Healer will be able to use heals to keep the Fire Giant and the Dragonmark in the game a little longer. Jozan also has a small heal that may help. Greenspawn sneak is a tile grabber. Elf warrior can be used to plink from range, but more than likely will end up being a road bump somewhere. The Forgepriest will be getting extra attacks form the Crow Shaman as well as an improved AC of 25 due to Cat's Grace, or 29 if you can position Jozan/Elf Warrior to provide cover from reach or ranged attacks. N. Quaggoth Slave 10 Regdar, Human Fighter 6 Skeletal Legionnaire 4 Tordek, Dwarf Champion 59 Urthok the Vicious 34 Vlaakith 79 Wolf 5 Xeph Warrior 3 Map: Keep of Fallen Kings I I figure commander 5 ought to get me my map often enough. The strategy is to get to the central victory areas and hold my own while preventing my opponent from holding his. With Urthok and Vlaakith near Tordek, Tordek is a monster. Additionally, the Quaggoth Slave becomes a terrifying prospect against paralyzed foes. The early fireball could help reduce my opponent's VA grabbers, and the near-guarantee of 30-damage from the disintegrate means I can whittle a titan down to size before Tordek engages. | | Champion of the Brainstealer Dragon Desert of Desolation Called Shot: Medium Brown Dragon ***Winner of WBC VIII and XII***

| 1. P - Very similar to the last matchup between P and G. In this case P has a Duergar instead of a bodyguard and a healer instead of Eberk. Neither of the maps seem to provide much opportunity for the Duergar to bring significant additional damage and the healer is nearly useless, since it will fall prey to the stun cone (healer is only level 3), spending most of the game stunned. Thus I see similar scenarios as last time. On hellspike, P has the clear advantage. On mushroom Cavern the game is a lot closer, but A has a minor edge at best (maybe none at all, since the lower saves due to lack of Eberk will hurt). Note: Band A is 194 points as listed. The strategy mentions a Blue (5 pts) which clearly seems to be part of the band.
2. K - Keep of the Fallen Kings is the clear advantage map for N. But, due to the Greenspawn Sneak, I think K can prevent N from getting the devastating first turn fireball off. After that, the advantage goes to N. The bodyguard will either make the healer immune to fire or the FGFP immune to Vlaakith's orbs (arguably, I am not sure which is better). Either way, the autodamage of Vlaakith on the FGFP drops like a rock. With Vlaakith neutered reasonably effectively, her only real chance will be to try for a paralysis shot. If that fails, game is over. And, given the FGFP's AC and save, I don't see the paralysis happening.

Notes 1. I'd like to see this match, played once on each map. I think that on Mushroom Cavern it definitely goes to A and on Hellspike it only probably goes to A. The FGFP backed up with snake's swiftness will be swinging three times per round. Against the Marilith, they're all going to hit, against the Marut, two out of every three will hit. Against the Marilith, those three swings do 60 damage, against the Marut, the two hits also do 60 damage. The Duergar Champ will eventually get two swings in a round on the Marilith for 30 more. That leaves 15 points. That can come from either one getting a single attack (or a cleave). The Marilith can kick out 60 damage if all 6 attacks hit. Against the FGFP, she's going to miss twice out of those 6 for a total of 40 damage. The Marut and Marilith's Large bases will prevent them from hitting exactly the targets they choose, when they choose, and so there may be a few wasted opportunities. I see it as close, and some well-timed Stuns could turn it around. But, with the Healer, I don't see the FGFP being taken down unless the Marut and Marilith can jointly spend all their attacks on it, and, if they do, he's going to drop one of them for sure before he goes down, and the remaining wounded one will fall to the Duergar Champ since he'll still have some snake's swfitness on his side (though his Conceal won't help in this match). The real problem, for P, is that A can use the GMA to help with securing VA points, and P will have a heck of a time getting Mialee onto a VA without being picked off.
2. The Quaggoth and Wolf stand a good chance, together, of eliminating the Greenspawn if it gets ahead. Even so, on Fallen Kings, with a Wolf, it's not to hard to use a suicide bomber as a fireball delivery system. The Fire Giant's band has to spread out early to avoid that surprise. On Drow Outpost, keeping the Shaman and the Healer near the Giant on the bridge is dangerous because the fireball will be saved so as to eliminate that threat (and without those two, I think the Giant can't beat the Vlaakith/Tordek combo). And, the Dragonmark either gives electricity immunity to the Giant (reducing Tordek's damage and Vlaakith's other spell threat), so, even the Bodyguard is vulnerable. On either map, the fireball is still effective. The disintegrate lowers the FGFP's hit points to 120 (or, with a bit of bad luck, to 90). Tordek alone can't handle that, but, with AC 26 versus giants, the FGFP's second attack isn't anything close to a sure thing. And, in reverse, Urthok is making Tordek swing at +21/+16, and he isn't going to be missing the Giant as often. If Vlaakith can get to position, the electricity orbs can pelt away at FGFP's support, otherwise, if she engages, the extra 10 damage every round will help. I see Tordek falling, but Vlaakith may still be standing by the time the Giant falls (the FGFP doesn't have sufficient healing--if that fireball is saved, it'll fry her, so she'll have to stay back). I think that the FGFP band can win if it can protect the support, but I'm not convinced, on either map, that it can protect the support. And, without it, it's not nearly as tough. If Vlaakith goes hunting on her own, sure, Tordek will fall faster, but Tordek is only worth 59 points and the the Shaman plus Marshal are worth more. It will be a tough battle, but I see Vlaakith winning in the end (even though Urthok will probably outlast Vlaakith, who will probably eventually fall).

I'll type a better analysis if I get the time to do so. Both matches are definately close and in a real match luck would be a signifigant factor on both cases. | | Champion of the Sarrukh

| P: it's a close match, and P is cooler N: the Dragonmark Heir is going to have to put immune electricity on the FGFP. It'll keep the titan alive longer vs. Vlakith and Tordek, but it means the rest of the band remains vulnerable to energy. I'm betting that a careful Vlakith player gets a chance to drop her fireball behind the lines at some point, which will take out some support, including the healer. With the healer gone, she can make the paralysis stick on the FGFP, and between that and disintegrate, her team can come out ahead. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X | |

| A: I wrote up a long analysis on a very similar match up last round. This time however, perhaps the Duegar Champ will be able to make a difference.
K: A careful player should be able to keep a fireball from taking out the support units for the FGFP. The immunity to energy from the DHoD will swing the match in favor of the FGFP band. It will really hurt the damage output of Vlaakith. Both Tordek and the FGFP may have some trouble hitting with their secondary attacks on one another. However, the healer and the bodyguard will make it almost impossibile for Tordek to do enough damage to make a significant impact on the outcome of the match. | | Looking to buy some figures? | 1st) A. The Shamans SS will win the game. If played well you can GMA next to the Marut stirke with the DC first. Then the FGFP attacks two times and once more with SS. This will result in a fast death to the Marut. From there on the Marilith can't win it...
2nd) N. With the Greenspawns hide it's not hard to place Vlaakith so it can't see him. The fireball kills activations and with a better then 50% chance routs the shaman. From there on K will have a hard time because of activation disadvantage. While Tordek beats the FGFP (with help of Vlaakith). | | My Haves and wants: http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp?user=Janos_M.

| Posted By nycfarmkid on 01/23/2007 7:07 AM Yeah I'm pretty suprised at the voting after the last round. 8-7 A over P. Considering how well P trounced a very similar band last round I'm a little suprised. I think folks have rightly recognized that a) the Healer is a slightly bigger factor than Eberk (despite the stun cones), and b) the Duergar Champion is also a bigger factor than the Dragonmark Heir, despite the protection from sonic that she gives the FGFP. I should probably edit my old post with analysis rather than sticking my analysis here, but oh well.
I think P wins, but not necessarily as soundly as in the last round. Not having sonic protection isn't too big a deal for the FGFP, because he's going to knock out the Marut first, anyway. The Marut probably gets in 1 shot, maybe gets 2 hits on the titan and only if really lucky gets a third. The inclusion of the healer alone makes up for most or all of the sonic damage. And though the FGFP won't last quite as long without a bodyguard, the Duergar Champ has more hit points and is an additional threat.
The reason P wins is the stun cone (and maybe commander effect). The FGFP can't afford to go after the Mind Flayer before the Marut and Marilith are gone, and the Duergar Champ probably doesn't take him down quick enough even if his player wants to take the risk of diverting him from attacking the titans. With 2 or 3 stun cones before he dies (minimum), the FGFP probably loses a turn (never mind the support), and that will be fatal, especially if it comes before he can wipe out the Marut. With a Mind Flayer on the board and no Eberk, morale save is no sure thing, and if the FGFP misses morale, that's also fatal. With at least two ways that the match can go south fast for A, I say P has the advantage going in. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X

| 1. P On Hellspike, P is a clear winner, with the smoke handicapping the crow shaman's SS, forcing it into melee reach of opposing hitters. On mushroom caverns the bands are fairly evenly matched, so the overall likely winner is P.
2. K Dagonmark can make the FGFP immune to electricty, nerfing both Tordek and Vaaklith. Despite T's AC bonuses, the FGFP hits hard enough often enough to take out the opposition quickly, especially with cleave.
