Sometimes, when you sit down to skirmish, it's useful to look at your opponent's warband and ask: "How many hit points do I have to carve through to beat this band?" I think we've all done it at some point or another...

Well, I recently played the following warband against an opponent:

Cleric of Dol Arrah
Tordek, Dwarf Champion
Dwarf Sniper
3x Gold Dwarf Soldier
2x Aasimar Fighter

Now, before you go analyzing this warband for effectiveness and start making suggestions on ways to improve it, I *must* point out that the warband was built solely for "fun" play. In fact, I built the warband to provide a mild challenge, but ultimately to lose to tier one bands. In this way, I could hand a new player a prebuilt tier one band and I could play this band. It might be a tough fight, but the newer player would likely walk away a winner... and think about how great the game is.

So, with that in mind, it's funny that I'm going to use this band to make a larger strategy point.

I should also point out that many of you probably already realize what I'm about to say, but perhaps forget - like me - from time to time.

The point is a simple one: Tordek does not represent the largest number of hit points in this warband. His stat card shows the most, but in practice, the Cleric of Dol Arrah represents more than twice as many. How do I come to that conclusion?

Well, we start off with the Cleric's base 55 hit points. If he's left alone during the battle, he'll likely use both Cure Serious Wounds, essentially adding 60 more hps to your warband. That brings his grand total to 115.

Next, consider the fact that he makes all 3 of the Gold Dorfs Fearless when properly positioned. Since they don't fail morale checks, that's an extra 20 hit points *each* that you have to carve through to get them off the board. 20 x 3 = 60. 60 + 115 = 175. (I could be more accurate here and pro-rate the hit points based on the chance of routing, but let's keep it simple.)

So far the Cleric of Dol Arrah represents 175 hit points for your warband. But that's not all...

Against evil warbands, he adds +2 AC to his adjacent allies. In a way, that's like adding a 10% miss chance. Let's say you take ten attacks across the course of the battle that do an average of 10 damage (with misses factored in). One of those ten attacks will now miss, adding another 10 virtual hit points to your warband.

And then there's his commander rating of 7. With the Cleric on the board, Tordek only has a 10% chance of failing a MC. Without the commander, that percentage increases to 45%. If you brought Tordek down to exactly 50 hit points, that extra 35% chance of failing a MC is now virtual hit points - let's call it 0.35 x 50 = almost 20hp.  The same goes for the Dorf Sniper, but for him, you only gain approximately 10 extra hit points.

Adding everything up, the Cleric now represents 215 hit points for your warband.

OK, OK... the math is off. AND Tordek could independently rally after failing his MC. AND I didn't consider the Cleric's chance of failing a MC. AND...

I know - but that's not the point. The point is - under certain scenarios - a figure like the Cleric can represent WAY more hit points than what is immediately printed on his stat card.

Now - is it worth taking that 20 point AOO to get by Tordek and focus on the Cleric? Think carefully - you COULD be trading a measly 20 hit points for an extra 215 of the enemy's!
