OK, here's the idea. Make a mini that would cost less than 10 points and could be a reasonable rare.

(It does NOT count to say "Wild Elf Warsinger." Heh. Although that's a fine example of a sweet piece of fodder.)

Here's my two tries:

Gnome Sapper
CG Rare - 8 Points
Small Humanoid - Gnome
LvL/Save: 3
Speed: 4
AC: 16
HP: 10

Melee: +3(5)
Ranged: +4(5)

Scout
Trap [] (Replaces attacks. Place a marker on any empty adjacent square. Choose one type of energy damage. If any creature not named Gnome Sapper moves into any square adjacent to the marker, all creatures adjacent to the marker take 15 damage of the selected energy type, DC 14.)

And...

Experienced Mole
CG Rare - 10 Points
Medium Humanoid - Human
LvL/Save: 4
Speed: 6
AC: 14
HP: 15

Melee: +3(5)

Infiltration (Set up in your opponent's start area. Until Experienced Mole attacks, is used as a flanker, is the target of one of your creature's spells or special abilities, or is used to gain victory points, Experienced Mole gains False Ally.)

Reveal Self [] (Immediate. This creature loses False Ally.)

False Ally (Your opponent may not target this creature with attacks, spells, or special abilities. Your opponent's creatures can move through this creature's space and do not provoke attacks of opportunity.)

The wording is probably off on some of those abilities, but you get the gist...

There already exsists a fodder rare, it's a little over 10 points, fodder though none-the-less. Aberrations: Green Dragon.

But it was a good Fodder in his time, because move a lot for tile grabbing.

Nowdays is almost useless and crappy... and too expensive!

Goblin Sorcerer

LE

COST 10 Pts
Level 3
Speed 6
AC 12
HP 10
Melee Attack: +0 (5)
Type: Humanoid - Goblinoid - Hobgoblin
Sorcerer Spells
1st—[][][]
Magic Weapon (touch, +1 att, ignore DR);
Magic Missile (sight; 5 damage),
Burning Hands (cone; 5 fire damage; DC 13)

That would be my rare (actually, my dream LE fodder spellcaster).  But more likely than not I see him as an Uncommon.Â

I still see him played in a number of warbands as there is not a better piece out there for a cost of 28 pts - 70 HP and with speed F12.Â

Sadly, there are just not that many warbands that can fit in a 28 pt fodder piece.  Especially when you can spend 5 more points and get a Duergar Champion.Â

now i think you mean theres not a better piece in LE for 28 pts, because we all know that the shadow dancer is the best value for your buck at that cost.

I'll give ya that one.  28 pts for the Shadowdancer is a real bargin, and Fearless with Storm, can do serious damage, and can grab VPs anywhere anytime with a Shadowjump.Â

I gotta be honest, I don't think I'd ever want to see a 10pt rare, but I do see the challenge in this... I figure it would have to have some kind of appeal for being a rare, so a recognized unique fits that bill, then it would have to be something substancial in tech, but weak otherwise...

Haha - love it. Make it work like "Beckon" with a low DC. Give him only a few HP so if he uses it, he likely dies. But FUN nonetheless.

Kudos to the other suggestions as well. I'm enjoying them immensely.

I wish Ochre Jelly wasn't already made... I'd suggestion a 6 pt rare for that. Oh... let's do it anyway...

Split Ochre Jelly
LE/CE Rare - 6 Points
Medium Ooze
LvL/Save: 3
Speed: 2
AC: 5
HP: 40

Melee: +5(5 + 5 acid)

DR 5
Wandering Monster
Split (
If this creature is hit with a melee or ranged attack that would damage it, it does not take regular damage. Instead, reduce its hitpoints by one half (rounded down) and place another creature named Split Ochre Jelly in the closest legal square. That creature enters play with the same number of hitpoints as this creature. If this creature has 10 or fewer hit points, it loses Split.)

Heh. 6 point mini that can earn your opponent 24 VP. Still... nifty fodder.

Eww...that would be a terrible rare, because as an RPGer, I'd want loads of them.  A fodder rare should not only be an excellent skirmish piece.  It should be a piece that RPGers would be happy with just a few copies.  I'll try to come up with something, but I think the uniques are good submissions for this challenge.

Oh, snap! I didn't even think of that! You'd need 4 of this rare to make it work... who'd want to collect that???

My bad - make that one an uncommon. ;-)

Here's an idea - a fodder Meepo. If he gets the killing blow on an enemy dragon, you can replace him with Meepo, Dragonlord!

Thing is, if it's rare, it has to be cooler than an uncommon or a common, or people feel gipped.

But if it's better, then it will become the default fodder piece.

I bring you a solution. UNIQUE!

So, I like a lot of these ideas (even The kender, and I'm pretty DL neutral) we just need to make sure it won't be overused. the 3 MW caster is another good idea.

Your version of Alhandra would be a boon in epic play.  Your opponent plays Bahamut, so you get commander 9 - nice!  Although, in the spirit of RPG (where this game sort of comes from), leadership sounds more like a "minions" type of ability.  Maybe you should give Alhandra some sort of a cohort.

Okay, how about this for a solution. Make it an iconic character (or sort of). Give it a level 1 stat card and an epic stat card:

Gronk, Half-orc Barbarian (sculpt is half-orc in leather armor, dual-wielding a battle-axe and a hand axe)

Alignment: CG
Pts: 7
Speed: 8
HP: 15
Level: 1
AC: 12

Type: Humanoid (orc)

Melee: +4/+4 (10/5)
Ranged: -

SA
Unique

Epic Gronk (Statting epic minis is difficult, at best, so I freely admit this would need tweaking):
Alignment: CG
Pts: 141
Speed: 8
HP: 175
Level: 13
AC: 18

Type: Humanoid (orc)
Melee: +16/+16/+11/+11/+6 (20 magic)
Ranged: -

SA
Unique, can't be flanked, improved critical (crit on 19-20), DR 5, blind-fight, cleave

I like it, but you should make it that it can only be used once per turn, so you wouldn't have incentive to run like 4 of those and get a quick 60 points over two rounds...

Heh, in retrospect, I think the Alhandra should have a CR as 1 LESS than the opponent's commander.  The point here wasn't to make a broken piece, but to serve a unique purpose.  Overall, she's very squishy (As a commander, she won't get any protection from the couatl, etc.. and she only has 15 HP).  The purpose is merely to even the odds a bit for bands that really rely on their map and have a high commander rating.  After that, she's supposed to be semi-useful, but fodder.

I like the idea of a mini that is a low level iconic coming with an Epic version card too.  Since the piece is unique, the epic wouldn't have to be raised all the way to 140++ point status to be interresting.

Very interresting mechanic looking at scoring extra victory points too.  That would work nice even if the game format otherwise changed (ie. non-assault format).

i think I may have come up with a rare fodder piece that could actually be implemented without breaking the game. I think the idea is right on, my implementation of it might be sketchy though. I haven't played PnP in over a decade so picking the right monster is tough. I'll have a stab at it though

Green Slime
TYPE: ooze
FACTION: any
POINTS: ~10
LEVEL: 1 or 2
SPEED: 0
AC: 12
HP: 10 or 15
MELEE ATTACK: N/A

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

ooze traits
formless - When this unit takes damage, that damage is always reduced to 5
scout

I'm a little hesitant on points so I decided 10 would be where to start.  That way if you decide to run 2 of them you are making a legitimate sacrifice.  Would this need to have a large base?...i'm not sure but I don't think it'd effect the cost.  I'm also guessing that RP'ers would not want multiples of these (at least not more then 2) so maybe that base is covered as well.

not sure this should be a rare but i think its a nice idea:

human slave (CE/LE)
7 points

lvl. 2
speed. 6
AC. 15
HP. 20

melee: +5(5)

special ability:

slave( this creature can only be in a warband that contains a commander, your opponent gains permanent control over this creature if all of your commanders are eliminated)

I would murder for this piece. I'd run two in a heartbeat.

Why?

(I'd love an ooze mini.)

Run two on Drow outpost, scout out the bridge, run one up to block, and the other to sit there. It would eat up valuable VP rounds, and take multpile rounds to get through them. Very effective blocker in good choke points. The differenc between the ooze and the rat swarm is AoE damage. This one says any damage.

I would make the slave 3 points - then it is a winner.

I don't see how you can run one up to block when the speed is 0. and the large base is not set in stone...i'm just not aware of the proper size of a green slime. Like i said I feel the concept is good, but I'm not educated on DnD monsters enough to know which would fit the bill properly.

Here's a thought:

Pirate Cartographer
cost: 9
faction: CG
lvl: 2
spd: 6
type: Humanoid(human)
AC: 14
HP: 10

Melee: +2(5)

SA: Scout, Buried Treasure[][] (replaces attacks. If this creature is in a victory area, you score 5 victory points)

Flavor text: Aaaarrgghh!

What do you think?

I like this idea.  Very cool indeed. Â

True. But they do make excellent blockers. they avoid the one weaknes of the rat swarm, which is autodamage.

that's only if the monster qualified as a large base. besides we're talking about 10 or 15 hps with an AC ~12. Any 2 fodder pieces will probably have it dead by round 2. So its possible you'll gain 10 to lose 10 and an activation. On top of that if it did function as a capable blocker on outpost, you're only reinforcing the message to include a flyer in your warband that frostfell rifts and dragondown grotto encouraged anyways.

Woot! I called a trapmaker in my original post, and - although he's not a gnome - we're getting a kobold trapmaker in the next set!
