| Hey all:
Just finished putting together my first round of warbands. As I have 0 experience building my own, for the most part I netdecked a few that seemed fun and interesting and once I get a feel for how they work I'll try my hand at my own. One issue I'm running into is map selection. At this point I've only got the following:
Fane of the Drow (Fane of Lolth, Tomb of Queen Peregrine, Mithral Mines, Drow Enclave) Hellspike Prison (Magma Keep, Mushroom Cavern, Hellspike Prison) Base Set Maps (Flooded Ruins, Jungle Temple, Dwarven Outpost)
Rather soon I'll be getting Dragondown Grotto, Fields of Ruin, City of Peril and Frostfell Rift, and that's about where the availability seems to end. So, I was hoping that out of the maps I have some of y'all could help pick the ideal match for the decks I've been putting together. Decks are below:
Double Oni, Capricious Copper, Eternal Blade, filler. Double Shadow Dragon, Mind Flayer Lich, Delver Sergeant, filler. Large Gold Dragon, Elf Archers, Merchant Guards. Champion of Bahomet, Double Cyclops, filler. Underdark Band, 2x Scorrow, 1x Drider, handful of Drow.
Any help anyone can provide is more than welcome!
Connor

| Dragondown Grotto, Teleport Temple and Thieves Quarter are all illegal maps. So, though you don't have them all listed, be on the lookout.
Double Oni, Capricious Copper, Eternal Blade: Jungle Temple for now, King's Road later--you'll like Forest. Double Shadow Dragon, Mind Flayer Lich, Delver Sergeant: Tomb of Queen Peregrine now, Blue Dragon Lair later--you'll like walls plus line of sight. Large Gold Dragon, Elf Archer: Anything with easy-to-access victory areas. Champion of Bahomet, Double Cyclops: Hellspike Prison now, later add Evermelt--you'll like Smoke, it is the friend of this band. Underdark Band, 2x Scorrow, 1x Drider, handful of Drow: Hard to say, I don't play many bands like this. Probably anything with smoke to protect you from early ranged attacks.
Welcome to Maxminis.

| Thanks a ton. I'm interested in the Drizzt set so Evermelt may be a possibility at some point but I don't see myself getting any of the large dragon boxes so I suppose Blue Dragon Lair is out of the picture. Still, your suggestions are a huge help. Is there a general list of what maps are strong or are most of them useful in different situations?

These aren't decks, they're warbands ::))
Double Oni, Capricious Copper, Eternal Blade, filler. Try to get Hellspike for this one.
Double Shadow Dragon, Mind Flayer Lich, Delver Sergeant, filler.
Conventional Wisdom says Blue Dragon Lair, or Frostfell Rift.
Large Gold Dragon, Elf Archers, Merchant Guards.
Look for Keep of Fallen Kings
Champion of Bahomet, Double Cyclops, filler.
Maybe Hellspike for blindsighted Cyclops.
Underdark Band, 2x Scorrow, 1x Drider, handful of Drow.
Fane of Lolth!
I know I ignored what maps you already have, but these are the ones that I've seen used for these warbands...

| Hail!
Try to get a copy of the drow outpost map, your 1st and 2nd wb could do well on it.

I disagree with a couple of the suggestions posted so far. With the first warband, forest is a great benefit since Onis can use the "inside corners" to get sneak attacks using their area effects. My first suggestion would be King's Road since it has a nice central victory area for the CCD to sit on, but if you don't have it, I would suggest Jungle Temple. A gaseous Oni on the healing font is pretty annoying to try and get rid of.
The double LShD/MFL band would certainly be good on Frostfell Rift - IIRC, dazed creatures (from being pushed into pits) still grant combat advantage to attackers which is great for the dragons who get the bonus damage.
The LGD band should absolutely try to reach 10 activations by including some farmers if needed. You should choose a map where all of your minis can safely get to victory areas (any VA) in the first round from either side of the map. That way, you can get the most out of the dragon's champion power. I like Hellspike, but I'm sure there are lots of other good choices including Fane of Lloth and ToQP.

| Thanks for the input. One question I have is regarding the Oni and forest squares. How does it's sneak attack activate? Just trying to grasp the strategy and I'm not 100% getting it. Thanks!

In order to get the +10 damage bonus, you need to have combat advantage against your opponent. The most common way to get that is with a melee attack when you're flanking an opponent.
For ranged and area attacks, you can get combat advantage if you can see your opponent when they can't see you. Thanks to a recent ruling regarding forests, you can use "inside corners" to get into a position where you can see out, but opponents can't see in. From such a position, you can use things like lightning bolt and cone of cold against enemies and get the +10 damage bonus against them.
To see examples of how to use forest in such a way, check out the last example given in the Victory Points article: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20080424a

| Wow thanks, that helps a lot. Little unintuitive things like this I'm trying to catch on to. Are there any recent strategy articles around?

Not really. Just got to play around with the pieces to see what sort of things you can do with them. I've recently been intrigued with the Market Square map since the change dealing with market stalls (they're now pretty much identical to forests). It's amazing just how much they block LOS on that map.

| I'm new to DDM as well, and I am having the same problem. I have the Hellspike Prison and the Dragondown Grotto map packs, as well as the starter maps, and it is possible for me to buy more if needed. The two warbands that I have currently:
1. Spectacularly original ;) Wulfgar/EB band: 1x Wulfgar 54 1x Eternal Blade 54 2x Wild Mage 58 1x Warhorse 16 1x Merchant Guard 8 3x Farmer 9 9 activations, 199 points. I am currently playing on Hellspike, but the lack of early-battle LoS isn't working out as well as I'd like it to. Any recommendations?
2. I wanted to try out an FGJ warband, so here it is: 1x Frost Giant Jarl 102 1x Eternal Blade 54 4x Merchant Guard 32 1x Kobold Archer 6 2x Farmer 6 9 activations, 200 points. This one I haven't tried out yet, so I don't know if I'll be switching anything about it yet. For the map, I'm thinking Hellspike as well, but I'm not sure. The strategy I was planning on doing was bringing the FGJ, EB, and Merchant Guards up to the edge of the smoke and maybe letting opponents come to me, while plinking away with kobold... Or maybe heading to the VA on top, because of the really limited LoS. Any suggestions?
Thanks! Rob | | | |
