I have a question on charging.  In the rulebook it states that you must move at least 2 spaces from your original position to charge, and it doesn't have to be a straight line, etc.
So is it legal for a mini to shift one space over and then charge the person it shifted away from by moving at least two spaces away and then returning. (if it has enough movement)
I encountered this and someone said it was legal but I thought a charge meant you had to, not necessarily run in a straight line, but head towards an opponent.

ex)

               AB                                      A B

       characters A and B                 B shifts  then;

ABBBB

charges away reverses and goes back towards A  OR

   BBB
  A BBB

charges away and circles around  (pretty much the same thing)

Is this a legal move?  Is there something like the wizards website that has this as a legal or illegal move so I can print it off.  Whether it's legal or not I'd like to get an official printing because alot of people aways want proof.

Welcome to Maxminis!

You cannot Shift one square away from a piece and then charge that same piece.

You can Shift one square away from a piece and charge another piece though.

In addition to the 2-square rule, there's also the "you have to end up in the closest adjacent space" rule, and that thwarts your plan.

It would be an interesting exercise to see if what you're after is possible with some combination of two pieces on a specific map, but I don't think it's terribly likely.

Where can I find the 2 square rule.  The newest player at the tournaments we're playing insists that he can charge the same piece that he shifted away from making charging teams insanely unfair.

I just wanted to bring some proof so that everyone is learning the same way and playing by the rules properly.  Everybody else is on the same page but because of the way the wording is in the rulebook with the most recent starter, it is hard to dispute this with him.

Page 3 of the errata:

Page 28 – Charge Attacks
[Revision]
The third paragraph should read:
“The creature must move at least 2 squares away from its starting position and must finish its movement
in the nearest space adjacent to the enemy. It doesn’t have to move in a straight line, nor does it need to
move in the shortest path. If none of the closest possible adjacent spaces are legal positions, the charge
is prevented.”

at least 2 squares away from the starting position, away is the keyword,

Dordledum has it. Point to "starting position" in the rule when you show your friend.

Devil's advocate here. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but I will point out something noteworthy. In that the clarification also states that the mini does not have to take the shortest route, the tactic to Shift (a move action) and then move away and back at least a total of two squares (not the shortest route) but end in the nearest adjacent square (likely the square out of which the mini shifted initially) that mini would actually meet the requirements of a charge: "moving at least two squares from its starting position" and "finish its movement in the nearest space adjacent to the enemy".

I'm reasonably sure that "nor does it need to move in the shortest path" could soundly kill your argument against a Shift (move) / Charge (attack) tactic. That new guy just might be right. My $0.02.

You must move 2 squares away from starting postion during a charge. The rules don't care which path you take, but you must endup 2 squares away from the starting position, therefore never possible to charge an adjacent enemy after shifting (except when you use the commander which let you shift 2 squares away first).
