Died heroically.

Powerful enough to subdue a CR 7ish arcane casting crypt spawn.

There can be multiple of them so they don't necessarily have to be CR 7ish themselves.

A Spectral Guardian/Minion would've suited the task well, IIRC, but I can't find them in any 3.0 or 3.5 resource.

Any suggestions?

Thinking in particular of what we have seen in minis recently, some form of death knight sounds like it could fit the bill.

not too many people die heroically and are rewarded with undeath, not part of the usual "hero" package.

You might think incorporeal instead, or something such as a Revenant. This is basically a ghost that seeks to avenge its own murder.

There are plenty of incorporeal undead that fit the non-evil role better. In addition, you can easily change the CR by class level.

One fun hook might be a revenant that didn't know the identity of its murderer, so it may be misled.

I considered revenent but it decays after six months of searching for it's murderer, or upon finding him and destroying him.

This undead has to last for ten years and beyond.

And it's not so much as a reward as it is a sense of duty after death that needs to be fulfilled. The heroes died killing a wizard who was an evil menace, and because the wizard became a crypt spawn, they stuck around after death to make sure he couldn't escape and cause any further problems.

As I said, the old Spectral Minion/Guardian from Dragonlance would be almost perfect, but I can't find stats for it. Surely there is SOMETHING that would fit the bill? There has to be a gazillion undead...

You're not looking for undead. You're looking for a Deathless. Take a peek into the BoED. You'll find something.

Well, you might just want to try ghosts (died with a purpose sorta unfulfilled) that ward the area, maybe even going so far as to try and possess any adventurers that come around, so that they can finish the job. [)] Maybe generate the stats for the former party and have the PC's play those characters. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Ghosts can have such varied powers nowadays, you could produce quite a variety. And they're not always "cursed" so much as driven by their desire to complete their task.

Hope that helps,

There's no reason why you couldn't construct your own improved revenent. One that lasts longer and only decays after achieving its purpose. Theoretically, such a revenent could last decades, centuries, or even longer.

I have considered ghosts as well but my concern is that they wouldn't really be able to do much in order to essentially control the activities of a crypt spawn. Ghosts are great against living creatures, but not so crash hot against undead.

I'm trying to get some information on deathless at the moment and have also been recommended the 'sacred watcher' template.

As soon as I read your post, I thought - Deathless.

One option that you could think of is using a Vampire, this way you could modify the character's power to suit the situation. A 5th level character vampire would equate to a CR7 monster. A vampire could easily have died heroically and could be an "Angel" type undead.

Otherwise just make up your own monster using the ones that you mentioned as a framework - remember it's a one off, so go ahead and have fun with monster creation.

Hope that this helps

Cheers

Funny I immediately thought, Revenant (a personal favourite of mine[:D]), I would just change it so that it didn't decay over time.

Ooooh... Revenant... mmmmm....

I wish I had Monsters of Faerun...

You could always build your own too; or you could commission some loser with way too much free time on his hands, who knows all three core books and most supplements front to back. Like me. :D

While on MoF, consider Good Lich as a possibility.

Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be the revenant-ish folk that are holding the bad guy in. They could be frustrated that they can't touch him to finish him off, but he could be frustrated by some magical wards or something that keep him from menacing the world at large. Sort of a "He's trapped in there, but we're trapped out here" thing. Sounds like the sort of twisted, sadistic thing Orcus would do to someone that was so arrogant as to aspire to undeath. I've got plans for my players to someday run into an undead mage that was trying to become a lich but Orcus tricked him, and he became a spectre instead.

The PCs could even be the ones responsible for breaking the wards. "Oh great, now he's free thanks to you buttinskis. The least you could do is help us destroy him before he finds out."

Or you could have revenants held in stasis (no decay) until something happens to allow them access to their foe, like adventurers opening the wrong wizard locked door...

With magic and gods and such, just about anything is possible.

Hope this helps,
JIM

Sacred Watcher from Book of Exalted Deeds looks like my best option. Thanks for the help.
