I use my computer. I use a lot of MS word. I took the SRD and made a bunch of hyper links through out the SRD for such things as enviorment/conditions, class features, skills, etc... Made an entire freakin huge spell list in word of all the spells from various books I use that is hyperlinked as well. I am a nut.

As for a combat tracker I used to use one. It was DM Buddy. But I found that I was cramped into staying behind my table. Whereas, I typically like to walk around the players as I describe the situation they are in. So, I made up a combat matrix in Word that is on legal size paper and a clip board. Keeps me mobile!

I know there are some .xls programs that are out there but the majority of them were made for 3.0 and the subtle changes from 3.0 to 3.5 throw me off so I don't use them.

edited for completion of a thought; hit the post key...

I am looking for a good program (free if possible) that I can use while DM’ing to keep track on combat, char, NPS, maps ect. An excel program would work.

Thank you for any help

I use DM's familiar. It's free for a month so you can decide if you like it, and (I believe) $20 to buy (which I think is very reasonable). Further it has a huge fan community which regularly takes adventures/source books and translates them into DM's familiar and then gives out the database for free. I'm sold on the program, but it isn't free (which I agree would be ideal).

Griffrat, could you send me a copy of that word doc? I have made some in the past and used them, but I have not been very happy with them. I would like to see what you and others have done.

Thank you

I have looked at it, but I have not run the program. I would need longer then the 30 (I thought I read 45 days today) day free period to try it out as my gaming group does not get togeather to often.

This is good to know if I do decide to look farther into it.

Sure I could send it tomorrow as I may not have much time between work and tonight's RPG. The party has found the lair of the vampire and its spawn...duhn, duhn, dun...[}:)]

But I will get it to you as soon as I can. [:D]

while its not free, E-Tools is a VERY nice program now that codemonkey took it over. I'm not sure about trials or what not, but it really is a nice program. They also sell upgrades, for almost any splat book you can imagine. i plan to, eventually, buy the big package, and get all the additional books for my e-tools.

Recently our group started using a tool called DM Genie. It has some short comings, but they are few. You can put everyone's characters there, add in different groups for combat, keep track of certain stati such as from spells, keep track of weather conditions, etc. I don't DM, but I downloaded the trial for 60 days and will probably buy it (its $29.95). They are also constantly working on upgrading things. My DM and one of the other players already bought it, and the DM (who previously used E-Tools) is crazy-in-love with it..
