| Do you want exotic or just different?
i'm partial to javelins, the idea of dozens of javelins hurled towards enemy lines all at once is a little more intimidating than all those weenie little arrows.
You could always try simple firearms, flintlock style. | | "We can't stop here...This Is Bat country!"

Which I know were covered in the DMG 3.0. Not sure if they're still in there for 3.5.
Options from Arms & Equipment Guide: Halfling skiprocks (able to hit two opponents if thrown right) Bolas (ranged trip attack) Gnome calculus (oversized sling hurls flasks of acid, alchemists fire, etc) Chakram (think Xena, Warrior Princess) Elven Double-bow (a bow designed to shoot two arrows at once)

Frist wave would be javelins...when the enemy closed in switch to throwing axes...then to melee.

I like that.... It's gotta be intimidating to face foes with skill in such diverse weapons. Whenever you see someone do something you can't you go "ooh. aaah". | | "We can't stop here...This Is Bat country!"

Why would you NOT use longbows? I know they are not very exciting or exotic but they have the best range. Why chuck a javelin or hand axe, or spear, or dagger when you can launch volleys of arrows from 100 feet away. ???????????????????????????????????????? | | Leaning towards giving 4e the Digitus Impudicus Champion of the Spider Eater with rider. I know I don't always go with the most practical options for either my characters or my NPCs, but for me that's what puts the fantasy in the game. Strange sites and heroism doesn't always involve monsters. But that's just my style, I'm not critisisng the use of longbows. | | "We can't stop here...This Is Bat country!"

| In my world the crystal wizards have invented magical cannons, basicaly giant sized staffs charged with various spells, like a cannon of fireballs. In D&D, if you want to keep it fantastical wands are pretty much guns, give em wands of magic missile and you're good to go. You can't even miss, LOL.

May be for simple book-keeping.
wicked cool campaign had the PCs accompany by a group of soldiers.. he would have to keep track for may be 20+ quivers, if he wanted the shoot-out in the farm house to happen. Or simply a different style of combat, like the Romans had skrimishers threw javelins at enemy lines before their armour infantry move up.

| You might try the battle dart. A medieval weapon, it comes in small or large variants (the large one can be seen in use by Kjell Nilsson playing "Lord Humungous" in the Road Warrior to kill Vernon Wells (Wez)during the final road battle. While the dart of the game is designed to disable an opponent, the battle dart with its three prongs and front heavy design is suppose to be used en masse to kill enemy even in heavier armor.
Military units use the darts when advancing by throwing them in tall, steep arcs against a prepared defender to force them to redeploy their shields to meet the threat. If the enemy does not "turtle" their shields, they get killed by a rain of the heavy darts. If they do, then they loose the advantage of the shield in meeting a charge. | | Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt.

In my world, during the Great Race Wars (elf vs. drow, dwarves vs. duergar, gnomes vs. svirfneblin in a Loser Leaves the Surface World Parcheesi tournament -- the gnomes cheated) the kender were the first casualty. I mean, if every kender has a 10% chance for a useful magic item, and you kill 10 kender...
And thus do the kender pass from the memory of the world. I think the other races just wanted an excuse to kill all the little so-an-sos...
Back on topic, you might want to let firearms be exotic weapons (-4 to hit if not proficient) that don't do much damage (d6?) but crit on an 19 (or even 18?) or better with a x4 crit multiplier. When they hit a vital area, they hurt. They should also take an inconvenient amount of time to load (a round longer than a heavy crossbow?). You might have a 1 or 2 be a misfire or jam that takes an extra round to clear. Three ones in a row, and the gun blows up or is otherwise disabled.
Just a first pass. In my game, gunpowder is a dwarven military secret that they keep VERY secret (to the point of having human alchemists that discover it "disappear"), so I haven't given it that much thought.

| I like that actually, they could even "circulate" coded texts with inacuracies in the formulas. Leading to the subsequent loud disapearances of several human alchemists. [:p]
