Congrats on achieving the milestone BTW.

| Well first off how gullable are you're players?
Only use this idea if... 1. you're players are gullable. 2. You're players are quick to run away from a fight they know they can't win.
Assumeing they are here is an idea.
Kobold Illusionist conjures an illusionary Dragon. Another Illusionist summons a Halfling *everyone trusts halflings*.
Halfling runs into the party while they are wondering around a valley with said dragon in persuit. Halfling tells the party they have no hope of beating it with out the aid of a powerful magic sword that just happens to near at hand.
While running the *dragon* makes a few attempts yet always seems to miss.
What the players don't know: First they are running into a box canyon. Second a mass of Kobolds lay in wait above the canyon. Once they get so far in trigger landslide and there stuck. The kobolds at that level have hardly any hope of hitting a PC however with so many, and with a harsh poison on each arrow when they do hit it hurts [)].
.........
That is my ambush however if you want to have the gamblers up the odds you could...
have the players walk into a cave. Odd thing about the cave is there are sharp spikes on the ground very close together. They can see a chest *illusionary* in plain sight just behind all the spikes.
After half way in a lone wizard walks in, and casts reverse gravity. Everyone falls to the roof. Wizard threatens to kill himself if the players don't drop there main weapon. When they do he picks them up, and teleports away [:)]. | | "...don’t try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal." - Zaphod Beeblebrox Champion of the Nymph!

| | Hobgoblins, one per party member, plus half as many in reserve. Fighter 4/Rogue 1 or 2 (their CR is approx. 6. 2 levels of rogue make this slighly nastier but mostly serve to set up the ambush, not the actual fight so the extra level there doesn't really up the CR any)use the Hobgoblin Sargeant from GoL for them. If they only have one level of Rogue the equipment is slightly better than normal for this encounter level, but it was the only way I could match the equipment on the mini to the equipment in the encounter. I would be happier if they were wearing chainmail, but they are definatly wearing Breastplates. Anyway back to the Hobs themselves. Their first level was rogue so after adjustments the skills are Hide 4/5, move silently 8/9, Spot 6/7, Listen 6/7, Bluff 3/4. The Feats are Weapon Focus(Longsword), Weapon Spec.(Longsword), Quick Draw, Point Blank Shot, Improved Initiative, and if they have 2 rogue levels Run. Their gear: 1 Large Steel Shild, 1 +1 longsword, 1 javilin, 1 mithril breast plate, and either 1 smokestick, 1 thunder stone, or 1 tanglefoot bag. I'll post the tatics sometime tomorrow. | | Currently pending trades: Vrecknidj* What you need to know about trading with me. | |

| Oh, if the party is sleeping in tents then the hobs should have some achemists fire too. This encounter takes place over four straight nights. The Hobgoblins are receiving their orders on a night by night basis and so shouldn't be too helpful to the party if taken prisoner or if speak with dead is used. If the party spends their nights in the space provided by a rope trick this isn't going to work. Leomunds secure shelter will require serious modification. Leomunds tiny hut needs hardly any changes.
Night Zero(only if tents): Three to half the parties number of hobgoblins (which ever is more) sneak up on the parties camp, about 30 feet(9 meters) away. They are some distance apart so that a single spell should hit only one or two of them. If the party is burning any kind of fire to keep the chill night air off the hobs will be able to see them from further away then their darkvision would normally allow. The hobs toss some alchemsits fire on the parties tents and retreat back into the wilderness and watch the party mill about trying to figure out what to do. No actual combat should occur.
Night one: Hopefully the party is now sleeping in the open curseing poor spell selection. Tonight a number of hobs equal to the parties number creeps up on the camp. Again they are spaced well apart, and again stop 30 feet away. This time they toss their javilns at the character(s) on watch. If more then one character is on watch then dived evenly, unless one character is an elf, in witch case they get all of them. The javilns are followed by thunderstones and tanglefoot bags at the sleeping party memebers. The Hobs then charge the camp and attack elves, then the spell casters all of whom they tried to identify through the scrying available at the temple and the attack earlier if there was one. Once the elves and spell casters are down or the hobs are at 50% hit points they retreat. Unless there are elves still standin in which case they keep fighting until either all elves are down or all hobs are. If all the Hobgoblins go down in this fight then the remaining don't attack again.
Night two: Same tatics as above this time with reserves and the Hobs with the highest remaining hit point totals so that again the numbers are 1 hob to 1 character. The poor sleep these attacks cause and the spell usage should be starting to show. The spells used in the last encounter and in recovering from it will count against the spells available in this one. Time for natural healing won't be available either.
Night three: Again same deal as night one only this timm all the remaining Hobgoblins attack and fight to the death.

| Thanks to all who have posted so far, and please keep the ideas coming. I'll post info on the party here in the next few days. Grading finals has been eating my lunch the first part of the week. My students' last revenge.
Bombur, I like the hobgoblin idea, since the party has encountered and destroyed a band of mercenary hobgoblins on the quest, and their "brothers" will want revenge. However, to throw a little monkey wrench into your plan: the party has a ranger, and she is a tracking machine. Hit-and-run tactics will be VERY risky.
More details later, and an update on the prize!

| Hit and run is always risky, but thanks to the mithril breastplates the hobgoblins have their full 30' movement rate and thanks to the run feat and if you go with the 2 levels of rogue then they run at 5 times their speed instead of 4. So getting away shouldn't be too hard, unless the party wants to try and track them at night with out getting all their armor on first. Of course if they party wants to track monsters with darkvision in the dark, you could have night two happen the same night. Of course then things get real nasty. And remember if the party is carring a light source the Hobgoblins will be able to see the party long before the party will be able to see the Hobgoblins.
Also there is always the possiblity that the players might think that following the hobgoblins will lead them into a trap. Or will decide that tending to their wounded comarades might be more imprortant than persuit. Or when the Hobgoblins run away have them run off in all different directions. I think I like the last one best, 'cause if they don't chase all of them they may double back and attack the camp or the perusing characters from the rear... The more you can play off the players paranoia the more likely you are to string this whole thing out over the whole three to four days. | | Currently pending trades: Vrecknidj* What you need to know about trading with me. | |

| | Hmm I am not oo familiar with CR's but I think the Half-Elf Hexblade looks alot like a servant of Ares. Or even better as you are going with the Greek Pantheon. A Medusa seems more than appropriate. Or if the they have angered Hera or The Mother of all Monsters I forget her name, they could send forth the Hydra for which you would have to use the Aspect of Demogorgon to represent. The setup: As the PC's come back down the mountain they hear a blood curdling woman's scream (illusion) Upon further inspection they find that it is issuing from a (poorly hidden) cave in the side of the mountain. Once within the cave there here the drums of ceremonial sacrifice and the woman's scream is now earsplitting. The travel through a narrow cave that opens into a wider open area with an altar at it's center. Upon the alter lies a eautiful woman surrounded by 4 Hooded acolytes (Cultists of the Dragon) Lead by a priest/priestess of Hera (Cleric of Nerull) make this battle difficult but winnable as it is just the beginning of the trap after the vanquishing of these evil doers the woman runs up to embrace the Paladin in thanks as he catches a glimpse into her eyes you get to say roll save. The illusion drops the medusa is revealed for what she is. And her attendants YUan-ti halfbloods or Displacer serpents come forth holes in the walls to aid their mistress in the destruction of what remains of the party. If they survive great but a granite Paladin is a damnable thing to drag back to town. | | Patience is a virtue and ignorance is bliss thus the world is full of stupid people waiting | |

| I think one of the biggest challenges to this ambush is defeating the scrying device. Just as there are bettors not wanting the PCs to return, there are also a few who do. If one were able to trace the attackers back to their source and implicate someone trying to hedge their bets... such might be seen as cheating and possibly void the bets (or hold some penalty for the cheater).
A plan is forming....
More to follow.

Exactly. The trick is to make it look like an "accident" or random encounter. Also, the PCs have friends that they have cultivated, who are not necessarily betting on them (although some have...) but want to help them. Also, before the left, the party rogue... ahem, tavern owner... made a substantial payment to the Guildmistress of "Merchants" to get a little "insurance." This is NOT common knowledge, however.
But fears of the Tycheans' wrath at tipping the odds is a legitimate concern. You do NOT want to cross Lady Luck or the "legitimate businessmen" who run her temples...

| Kyrin,
How does the scrying device work? Does it show like a 30' bubble around the device? Does it transmit sound as well as sight? Is it affected by lighting conditions?
Please answer these only as the potential antagonist would know them.
Thanks,
Frostrune

The device is much like an "overhead camera" about 20 feet up, with sight and sound in a 60' radius around the bearer of the device (the paladin in this case). The temple can pan around a bit, zoom in, pause, rewind, and record. Think like the ceiling cameras in casinos, or a computer RPG. They've mostly been providing folks with edited "highlights," only "going live" for special events (like the final ascent to the top). It does not provide any extra lighting, but can simulate darkvision (and thus could see things at times that the PCs could not).
The device can be thwarted as a crystal ball can, but the priests react swiftly to any interruption of signal. The signal has been interrupted twice, when the party has gone inside the mountain. The temple is rather puzzled as to why.
Keep questions coming. I think I'll start party profiles today.

| Here is the first of the party member profiles. DM notes are in brackets.
Party Member profile: Aeschylus
Little is known about the adventurer known only as Aeschylus before he began his career. He was apparently born to one of the priestesses in the Temple of Aphrodite [most of whom are sacred prostitutes with no particular social stigma attached] and was raised in the temple in the city of Strykos. He spent some time as a street urchin and petty thief, before he became associated with the adventuring party he now appears to lead.
Aeschylus appears to be very well-versed in the ways of stealth. His preferred tactic is to maneuver behind an opponent, often through tumbling, at which he is very skilled. When he can achieve surprise or an advantageous angle, he can injure an opponent with a blow to a much greater degree than his size and build would indicate. Thus, he likely has some knowledge of vulnerable spots. He appears to prefer using a particular dagger over any other weapon, and has done few ranged attacks. On two occasions, he has escaped dragon breath unscathed.
He has displayed some magical abilities, but appears to use a mixture of devices and personal power. He frequently casts magic missiles and has some limited telekinetic ability. He has Feather Fallen in the past, and has turned invisible on many occasions. His repertoire of abilities seems limited. He has mostly recently acquired a wand capable of shooting firey rays.
Aeschylus has used the wealth he has acquired as an adventurer to become co-owner of a tavern in Strykos, the Temple De-Vine. He seems to be the center of this quest -- rumors abound that the purpose of the expedition was to activate a powerful magic ring in his possession.
More profiles coming!

| Party member profile: Silkmist
Silkmist is an orphan, taken in along with her older half-sister Theatrel by the temple of Artemis to their grove outside Strykos. Theatrel is a half-elf, but by all appearances, Silkmist is fully human. Their parents were slain by orcs, which may account for her hatred of the race. Silkmist joined the adventuring party when they visited Strykos, and has stayed with them ever since.
Despite her youthful appearance, Silkmist is a skilled tracker and a formidable fighter. She has appreciable strength and dexterity. Her specialty is the longbow, and she is deadly from any range. She can fire multiple arrows at a time, and has no problem shooting into a melee with accuracy. She can even fire her bow accurately while enemies are right next to her, an ability possessed only by elite Dianic Archers [special feat which allows an archer to fire with enemies adjacent without provoking an attack of opportunity]. Some of her arrows are enchanted, empowered with thunderous energies, or occasionally weaving to strike an opponent such as a Displacer Beast. She can cause the bow to vanish at will, and summon it with a snap of her fingers [Glove of Storing]. In close combat, she is no less formidable an opponent, wielding a greatsword with mighty blows.
Silkmist possessed a wolf companion, but it was destroyed early in the quest by a lightning bolt from a Dark Naga. Her half-sister is well-known for having the ability to turn into a wolf, but it is unknown whether or not Silkmist also possesses "The Moon's Gift."
More to come...

| Party Member Profile: Danrilon Tremedes
Danrilon Tremedes is a musician and a priest of Dionysus from the capital city of Athenopolis. He joined the adventuriing party under mysterious circumstances, but rumor has it that the party rescued him from some evil humanoids, either orcs or kobolds. He is the co-owner of the Temple De-Vine in Strykos, and the tavern serves as a Shrine to the god of wine. Therefore, Danrilon holds a seat on the Aegis Council of Strykos [the council of clerics].
As one might imagine, Danrilon uses sound as a weapon, to distract, enchant, or even damage opponents. He urges his fellows on with rousing and bawdy songs in battle. As a priest of Dionysus, he has limited control over plants, warding off plant creatures and causing entangling vines to erupt from the ground. He also has been seen rebuking and destroying undead, and assaulting foes living and undead with beams of searing light. Naturally, he also tends to the party's wounds.
Danrilon is also capable of summoning magical creatures to attack his foes. During the quest, he has summoned a hippogriff, a great lion, and a great white bull [replacing the celestial bison]. He rarely enters close combat, but wields a flail when he does so.
Danrilon has earned tremendous emnity from the Temple of Ares for publicly mocking servants of Ares, especially Aeneas, the Paladin of Ares. Due to rules prohibiting direct confrontation between worshippers of the Olympian Gods, the Areans have not retaliated, but they are nothing if not subtle...
Two more to go.

| Player character profile: Tyreis
The dusky-skinned Tyreis was an up-and-coming young holy warrior in the temple of Athena... when his warhorse was slain in a battle with evil creatures not of this world. The loss still weighs heavily on him, and he nearly gave up his service to Athena. However, an opportunity arose to redeem himself (in his own eyes, not those of the order) when the barbarian hero Raman Krankelevavitch had to depart for his homelands in the mountains, and leave his mighty warhorse Rides with the Thunder behind. Tyreis agreed to take charge of the warhorse until Raman's return, and joined Raman's adventuring party.
Tyreis is an accomplished horseman, and he and Rides with the Thunder are a deadly combination. He is a deadly combatant on his own, however, and wielded his sacred spear effectively on the quest until it was shattered in conflict with a hill giant. Tyreis has adapted, however, and now uses a magical battleaxe taken on the quest from a captain of the Stormblades hobgoblin mercenary company. The axe unleashes the power of lightning when it strikes.
Although Tyreis is very new to the adventuring party, he has shown great loyalty and willingness to use his Athena-granted powers to heal and bolster his fellows. Rumors indicate that he is planning to use whatever wealth he gains on this quest to build a temple to Athena in Strykos.
One more to go...

| Party member profile: Jason "Potomedes"
Jason "Potomedes" is the most recent member to join the adventuring party, and the most enigmatic. His last name is not a true patronymic; it means "Son of the River," so he was likely a foundling taken in by the temple of Nike, goddess of victory [yes, one of their symbols is a swoosh]. He came to Strykos to promote the upcoming Pallasadian Games in honor of the gods, and has decided to travel with the party for the challenges it would afford.
As one might expect from a devotee to Nike, Jason is adept at a variety of forms of combat. On the quest, he has used a polearm, a net, a scimitar, and a longbow, among other weapons. However, his greatest strength appears to be in unarmed combat. He is a powerful boxer, and has successfully wrestled a number of creatures, including a Displacer Beast! He has also been able to subdue a number of creatures on the quest without killing them, providing information to the party. A favored tactic is to snatch a weapon from an opponent's hand, and then discard it or use it against the opponent. Like so many of Nike's children, he can be reckless at times; at the top of the mountain, he unsuccessfully attempted to wrestle a white dragon!
Jason has become a favorite among the "worshippers" of Tyche who are watching the quest. Bets are made on his every move, and no wager is considered too outlandish, considering the things he dares... and the things he does.
*WHEW* Well, that's all the party members. I hope you've found the profiles entertaining and informative. I'll update things based on their adventures to come. Please keep questions and ideas coming!

| Kyrin,
I noticed none of the PCs are arcane casters (well maybe a Bard but they don't count [B)]. Are there restrictions against wizards/sorcerors in your campaign or did the players just not happen to go that route?
Along this same topic...
If arcane casters are allowed, do you restrict their spell selection to certain sourcebooks? I am asking because a couple spells I am looking at are from the FR books (the FRCS and MoF to be exact).
Last question... When do you want your ambush submissions by?
Thanks,

You've missed an arcane caster...
It's just the route they've gone. There was an evoker in the party, but his player moved away. Just the ebb and flow of people coming in and out...

I'd prefer to just stick to the books I have listed at the start.

As I said, the way things are going with the speed of the campaign, and with (hopefully) impending fatherhood, the end of July is probably a realistic deadline.

| An update from the latest adventuring session:
Jason Potomedes successfully wrestled a troll, keeping it pinned to the ground while the rest of the party destroyed the troll's companions. He had tremendous difficulty disarming an ettin.
Aeschylus was nearly strangled to death by an annis. He has been turning invisible much more often than any amount of personal magical power would allow.
Tyreis was nearly slain by a troll [three attacks, one a crit, plus rend = OUCH!] but is learning to use his magical battleaxe to great effect.
Silkmist was able to "stare down" a Dragonne and persuade it to leave the party alone. She was nealy hugged to death by a large bear which was working with an ettin ranger, but managed to calm the creature and send it away.
Danrilon Tremides has been hard pressed to keep the members of the party alive with his magical and mundane healing skills. Of all the members of the party, he has had the most difficulty negotiating the mountain trails.
And that's all I can recall. We will be taking a break in my DMing soon, so that I can devote more time to my new son. I will resume later in the summer.

| This is EL 10, but it can be scaled down slightly by adjusting stats to non-elite array.
Invisible Druid 9 with freedom of movement precast goes to centre of party and drops a sudden empowered quill blast, Wizard 7 then casts a single Evards Black Tentacles as his readied action at the party. Druid then walks to edge of EBT thanks to Freedom of Movement and wild shapes into something appropriate according to what is in the party, such as a polar bear if there is a grapple monkey in the party, else something with reach so he can smack a few characters in the party, the wizard up top can then sit there and drain his 3rd level tank on either Empowered Rays of Enfeeblement or simple fireballs, according to what you deem necessary.
