You mean the old TSR Marvel game from the 80's? I still have my copy but never found anyone who would play it.

On a side note, I still have every issue of ROM, Spaceknight. 1-75 with all the annuals. [:D]

That's the one! Weird that I have the entire run of ROM as well. You can imagine none of the characters had the neutralizer. One was called Battlefist and had oversize hands and superstrength, another was Guardian and had a Rygaresque buzzsaw shield on a tether. I think the third was named Mentat and was a telepath of some sort. I can't believe I remember that after all this time.

What I really loved was going through the 'Days of Future Past' module, those were fun and oh so nasty! My Mutant character for that campaign was one of my favourites!

Man, that brings back memories. Our group used to play that all the time. I loved making my own super heros. Back then it seemed your imagination (and die rolls) were the limit. I remember setting up all weekend wired on Jolt Cola and Pizza playing at a friends house. We'd have one long game that would last at least 2 days strait, stopping only for "personal needs"
Ahh. Those were the days.[^]

Man, I'd kill to play in a good supers campaign. I've tried Champions, but really, needing to know advanced algebra in order to gen a character is a pain. Mutants & Masterminds seems good, but I don't know anyone who plays. I'm really waiting for Necessary Evil to come out in hard copy for Savage Worlds. That looks like a lot of fun.

I used to play back in uni witha gm who only ran games for mutants, it was always a special occasion when he wanted to run a session, cause it only happened every 6 months or so, but he was an awesome gm.

He used to make a randomn roll for a new player, to see if they happenend to be an ?eternal? (Wasn't that what they were called?) which in the comics at the time was a pretty big thing, Basically an immortal mutant like Apocalypse and Cannonball. There was also a chance you would carry the legacy virus.

Typical of my luck although there was only a 1% chance to be an immortal, I was the ONLY player it turned out who didn't get it. But we also had to roll our abilities randomnly (mutants don't pick their powers) and I rolled serial immortality. I was an immortal, and the best part was, my character knew it. None of the others did. I had a license to be killed.

Share your experiences here.

God I remember that game. The ease of the system allowed for some great role-playing time.

My main memory was of a mentalist I had. Another member of our group (know as Dr Johnny Fever,) used to go around using a light power that would blind his opponents. The problem is, he would never tell us when he would use that power and would blind us as well. Well, he did that one time, then my character found him telepathically, then telekentically threw him against the enemy. Ended up that the enemy was armored and Dr Fever had a weakness against physical damage and that throw ended up killing him. My character was made an villain and therefore an NPC. However, he was recruited for the Massachuesits Academy for Gifted Children by Emma Frost.

I've played in a few Mutants and Masterminds games myself, the game(despite best efforts on the GM's part) was pretty fun. I'm not sure I'd call it the last word on superhero gaming.

I played in a very short campaign using the Marvel rules. Nobody created unique characters, we all chose existing heroes. The only caveats the GM put on choices were no gods (Loki, Thor, etc.) and no current of former Heralds of Galactus. I played Spidey. IIRC there was also Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Hulk, and I think Mr. Fantastic(?).

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Why would someone pick Mr. Fantastic?

I understand picking Spidey, he's pretty good.
Wolverine is a given, who doesn't want to be a mean clawed healing guy with crazy hair?
Nightcrawler is the best choice ever!
Hulk might not be much, but HULK SMASH!!

Well IIRC he did have Unearthly(100)? intelligence, the closest to this is the Hulk/Banner Hybrid. Now how often did players actually take advantage of extreme intelligence is an altogether different question. [)]

Actually I remember one game where one person played Banshee (sound powers) and another played Dazzler (Transforms sound to light...like lasers). Now that's a game breaker right there. Banshee amped her up inot near cosmic levels for a bit. I think I had half the eastern seaboard go temporarily blind after that fight.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with a complete Rom run. Still hunting the rest of the "Spaceknights" miniseries from 2000.

I agree it was a very good system, but I only had a few chances to play. Over the years tho I have scanned some of my sourcebooks into pdf format, downloaded some other sourcebooks and proggys and am looking for other players so I can run a few games in the near future.

Hrmmm... maybe a play by e-mail or chatroom game perhaps...

Pale Rider, there is no SAS d20, even if there is. There is only the Tri-Stat one, that works beautifully.

For d20 Supers, not much competes with Mutants and Masterminds. My major beef with that is the repercussions of super-strength, as it comes out as an ACTUAL increase to your strength score, a super-strong character becomes an insane fighter.

Well that does certainly sound like a problem, but easily fixed with a house rule.

With all this take of MSH I went and d/l'ed a few of the books, though still no luck with finding the Days of Future Past adventure trilogy. Ahhh just looking at it all bring back even more memories.

Now I need to dig out my ROM comics too. I can't boast as many of that title as some of you, but I too enjoyed watching ROM send the wraiths packing with his nifty toys.

I must say, the idea of the all spaceknight game is a good one. Grim and I have talked about it before, and I think it's an excellent way to put to the field a group of players, and keep the game bound in a common theme that has the ability to propel story and maintain interest.

Unless of course your players don't like ROM and then I guess your out of luck.

I probably have logged more hours playing Marvel Superheroes than all other roleplaying games combined. High School, college and beyond, I game mastered, played and just sat around rolling up random characters.

With the Ultimate Powers Book, you could come up with just about any type of character, capable of anything, but with the random character generation system it offered, you could get the strangest of power combos. A usuform robot with zombie animation and self-vegetation? I get a headache just trying to come up with a plausible explanation for that.

My gaming buddies and I came up with modified character gen methods to avoid some of the strange combinations, but there's room for an oddball in every hero team. We had our share, to be sure.

I ran the game mostly, because I had the most villains. We didn't bother with most Marvel characters, preferring to just invent our own. In my opinion, the key to a successful superhero game is to have a long list of villains. A bit of artistic talent also really helps when you're introducing a new villain.

I haven't played Marvel in a while, but I still remember the power ranks from Shift-0 to Beyond, and smile when I think of FASERIP. It's not a perfect system, but we got a lot of fun out of that old system. And when it comes down to it, isn't that all a system needs to do?

Man I loved that Ultimate Powers Book, my first character from that book had the best of luck! Deity with about 14 powers!! He was truely Ubër and pretty much unstoppable. That book had so many possibilities, and I'm sure I tried rolling them all. [:D]

Well PAle Rider, if we ever want to take a break from our regular sessions.. I can run a Marvel Game. I still have most of my stuff.
My favorite memory is when I was asked to play Madcap, and had Dr. Doom drop trow on live TV and sing I'm a little Teapot.... Though I really wanted to smack one guy in a game. Everytime I would hit a Darkforce creature and do damage, he would hit it with a darkforce blast, and heal it.

That's kind of funny. When I read this thread I suggested to Grim that if our WLD party snuffs it (again) we should start playing MSH [:D]

If we did that, I'd suggest (and I know some would hate it) That the powers all be rolled randomnly, and we all be mutants. Like in the comics, you don't make the hero, you make the man, you have no control over what powers you get or how powerful they are.

Also when you have more than one power, you must explain a way that they are connected, for example, Archangel has flight and projectile weapon, two things which would appear to be totally disconnected from one another. But in fact, the projectiles are feathers, it all makes sense.[:D]

That would be excellent!

Some players find it tricky to get into hero games. Their D&D characters aren't usually heroes so to play an actual hero can be hard. You know the type, they always play the rogues or necromaners, never the paladins and clerics.

This was a general comment by the way, not one directed at any player I know, honest. I'm not being sarcastic. really.

I have not had that much trouble myself getting into the Superhero RPG. Hero's don't always have to be on the Paladin spectrum of roleplaying. The last character I played in a Supers game was the golden age "reformed" nemiesis of the party, he just decided that he hated the Axis powers more than the heroes.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Every sense this topic started, I've been looking for the old Marvel Super Heros books. I used to be able to find them at the Used book stores around here, but now I can't seem to find them anywhere.
And NOW I got an itch to play it again![:p] And I can't remember what I did with my old books. Man, That's been years ago. [:(]

Depends what you are looking for. I know of a place around here that has at least some of the modules they have in their sales box.

I'm looking for the main core books to the game. Marvel Super Heros box set. And the Ultimate Powers book.

Given that I, the DM, hates this idea, consider the idea snuffed. We tried the random bit many times to outrageous and jarring results. (Once the Ultimate Powers book came out there were 1000's of possible powers). So you have teleportation, hyper-running AND flight....Let's call you The Travel Agent. You can get there, but your useless once you're there since you are otherwise a normal guy. Or you end up with the powers of plant control and fire generation. Captain Regrowth? Slash N'Burn? Bonfire? (Actually that last name works for me.) You get my point.

Well, I for one would never suggest using #ahem# emule for this but if you can't find a hardcore copy of it, well you know! [)]
It not like TSR is around anymore! [:D]
