Hmmm, just had a idea.
Anyone here have the rules AND want to GM a play by email game? I have a copy of the box set and I might be able to get one more copy from my LGS.

I can't GM a game though. Anyone interested?

Well I think I could be talked into playing...but oh the horror of no maps and cardboard cut out superheroes!

I generally find play by email WAAAAY too slow for me....and kind of disjointed.

I've never done PBEM, but it's got to be way slow and disjointed... I can see why some people like it, though. You can do it at your leisure and it doesn't have the distractions of an in-person game. I do like online games (played some Living Greyhawk online) for that reason. The imagination factor gets cranked up quite a bit since you can't even see the other players.

Yeah, I can see where that would help. Instead of picturing your messy unwashed fellow player eating his chinese food on your right who looks decidedly un-superheroic, you can just imagine the character he is playing.

Yes, I game with a messy, sometimes unwashed player. Nice guy though.

Ive never done PBEM, but playbyweb.com offers a pretty good page for playing online games. Im currently in some games there and I find it quite nice that I can post morn and eve and the game goes on. Its a little slow, but still overall, I think a great time. Check it out, they do have a superhero game section.

Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

Personally, I think a weekly or bi-weekly game over a messenger service or on OpenRPG would be a great deal of fun. The only problem is setting up a time everyone can make it.

I've been running a pbem for 24ish weeks.

It can work and it can be a lot of fun, but the problem is maintaining interest and focus. After nearly six months (has it been so long?) my players responses are starting to become sporadic. But it can work.

Some players find it tricky to get into hero games. Their D&D characters aren't usually heroes so to play an actual hero can be hard. You know the type, they always play the rogues or necromaners, never the paladins and clerics.

Sounds kind of like me. I don't usually play the shininghero type, I prefer the flawed hero or the renegade. And it comes through when I run games, the fate of the shining, perfect and noble hero is ALWAYS an early grave. Vile Evil will always defeat Exalted Good, because the nature of EG is to look out for everyone else and not worry about itself, while VE cares ONLY about itself. Or as I once put it, "you'll get further ahead kicking puppies and eating babies than you ever will helping orphans and feeding the poor!"

This is the main reason I can't wait to play Necessary Evil, the BAD GUYS are the last line of defence Earth has from the alien invaders.

Especially with the "last line of defense from the alien invaders" part.

Do you know if a third series was ever planned? First series was much better IMO, but I still enjoyed that whole war of the worlds story-line.

Hey guys, there was the original yellow box set for Marvel Superheroes but wasn't there also an advanced set released at some point?

Yes, there was. More powers and other things. The one thing I did not like about it was they changed the way you increased ranks in things from an all at once thing (say like incredible to amazing) to a point by point increase (incredible (30) to incredibe(31) etc, etc.). May be more realistic but the last thing I look for or the first thing I do not look for in Marvel Super Heroes is realisim.

Moore drew on alot of the research he did on From hell to creat LXG, he had originally spent years on the research, so while i have heard of no plans for a third series, I think it likely he will seek to draw upon that significant research work again.

This very method of advancing your hero was what I loved about the advanced (blue) box. The old power creep style just didn't reflect the comics to me. Some of the well established heroes like spiderman and Capt. America would have had stats in the unearthly range with all the experience they would have had. And, also, there was no realism anywhere in the box. Not even close. Fun by the mile and off the hook action but no realism. No skin grafts after getting hit by the Human Torch, no cancer after fighting the Radiactive Man, not even broken bones after getting charged by the Rhino.

Most of the comics I read feature the dark anti-hero types. But then again I pretty much stick to Vertigo titles, anything by Grant Morrison, and other books similar.

Necessary Evil is a book for the Savage Worlds system, one of their Savage Settings. The idea of it is that aliens arrive, and invite all the superheroes to a meeting at the equivalent of the Xavier School or the Avenger's Mansion. And blow it up with their alien weaponry, then send down teams to pick off the survivors, tooled up to negate the hero's weaknesses.

Now Earth's being invaded, and the only super-powered beings left to fight them are the villains, the Dr Dooms and the like got hunted down and killed too. The aliens ignored them, because the heroes always pwned them. The party are thus the equivalent of the Injustice League or the Masters of Evil, but without their Lex Luthor, or Ultra-Humanite or Baron Zemo.

I seriously can't wait to play this. I love the Savage Worlds system, despite its lethality, and this just sounds like a hysterically funny setting to go with. At least it'll be funny at first. Time to reread my Thunderbolts comics I think!

IIRC, that was a redo of an even earlier series (something in the 70's I think)....though I may be incorrect on this.
