How new is this DM? This sounds like stuff I pulled off years ago, and I'm only 18.

Yeah that seems really like something I did when I DMed when I was 13 and stuff. I mean by calculations the ogres by themselves (regular CR 3 ones) were a EL of about 10-12. Is this the regular DM or a first timer?

DMS + NPCs working with group = Bad news if not handled right.

There was nothing I hated more than the DM adding his NPC (more like uber PC) to the party. I do feel you're pain... that is why I took the mantle of DM. If you can't take the heat try standing behind the flamethrower [)].

dont worry about the campaign. doesnt sound like it will last very long anyway.either the DM is having you level twice to get you ready for the "final battle" or he just doesnt have much experence DMing. the combination of the 2 will most likely end the game shortly

Oh man....that's bad. My gaming group and I talk about things like this all of the time. We hate to be "coddled" by the DM. If things like this started happening to us I think I'd walk away.

If its a new DM Id suggest sitting down and talking to him. Say hey the campaign is doing a, b, and c, and it is not alot of fun. Can we tone back the power level threats a bit. After a few more chances at learning then further action (walking away) might be inline. But I think those are always last resorts. Even experienced DMs make mistakes. Sometimes you just get this idea and get exicted about what your going to do and want to see it happen bad. I had this great battle once that my players now refer to only in infamamy as "the farm". After it ended in TPK I talked to them and turned back time 3 days to let it go again. The battle was unbalanced.

Well I'm pissed off. I'd rather he set ELs for our party and forget the NPC shit. As it is this new sorcerer, the ranger's bow, and the paladin with some godly weapon are way overpowered, so he's put himself in a bind. I don't want catchup stuff for my character. From the loot last night the half-orc got RoP +3 and Cloak of Resistance +3. The ranger got belt of giant strength +4, and his magic bow does multiples of his str modifier to damage. Did I mention he brought down one of the CR3 ogres at 200 yards with one shot? WTH! Our new sorcerer got some godly bracers. The game is moving further out of whack.
The guy is a late 30's DM with some experience, but clearly no idea of EL. I think he DMs for the kind of campaign he'd like to be in. Not my ideal type of game, but I'm a group player, so I'll stick it out.

I have always been here.

Give this guy the DMG, inform him that being given stuff for free by a Care Bear GM has no satisfaction, and make what you think abundantly clear.

Hopefully he doesn't realise how much what he's doing sucks, and will fix it.

Glauron,

Not that this will necessarily help you, but my group has a standing rule that allows for a Vote of No Confidence at the end of any session. If a player thinks that the GM has gone off the deep end and/or is completely incompetent, he can call a Vote, explaining why he thinks the GM should be replaced. The GM can then defend himself, and everyone else can chime in with what *they* think is working or needs to be fixed. A unanimous vote by the players dumps the GM immediately and replaces him with someone else. In any case, I've found it's a very useful (and safer because it's done publicly) forum to hash out differences and disagreements. Obviously, your mileage may vary. . .

Cheers,

Dagonet

My only question is, How long has The DM been running games? By the sounds of it, not long. I hate it when DMs think the PCs need "help" when all they really need is a fair game.

Hmmm.... 5 level 5 PC's taking on an Ogre riding a 24HD Destrachan. Not sure why the 5 Hill Giant Bodyguard were needed or the 13 other Ogres thrown in.

Me thinks the DM doesn't have a clue (or was a little bit excited).

Wow your DM sounds half Monty Hall half Alicia Silverstone (Clueless).

You're all only fifth level and he's throwing Hill Giants and 24HD creatures at you!? I say you sit him down put the DMG in front of him and force him to read and reread it with speacial focus on the section on Challenge Ratings. Then tell him the adventure is about your players not the new group of even higher leveled NPC's he's brought along.

I have no problem the DM adding a single NPC if the party is small but you had 5 players, so none were needed at all.

OK. It's Mother's day here in OZ. Ive just been with wife to visit daughter and drunk 4 bottles of very nice wine. So not only pissed off, but I am pissed (aussie slang for drunk). DM in question is one of 5 in our group. He and wife host all or sessions, so let's not be too hasty. I have been with this group for 3 years and this is this guys first attempt at DM. Mind you this is session 6 of his campaign. He already did a TPK on us when we were L3 characters. He pours his heart and soul into planning, but he doesn't have a clue IMHO. Still, the group is solid, and we'll stick at it.
He is "sensitive" to criticism, but I'll try a heart to heart with him.
He is trying to provide excitement and challenge, but most of us on this forum know that you don't have to have a ridiculous EL augmented by NPCs to make it so. I thought he would have got the message from a previous TPK, but it seems not. His response was this fiasco. I will try to have a diplomatic word with him.
Trouble is, this is a great group of people and I don't want to get anyone offside.
Maybe I should move to Bundaberg and join Darkfather's mob, or Ballarat and join the Merric brigade.

Well I am approaching retirement age. I have family (sister) living in Bundaberg (yay Darkfather) and I have taught at Ballarat University and visited the Eureka Stockade (Aussie history - so yay Merric).
Wife favours warmer climes so probably Darkfather is favorite at this time.

It's a tough call when your game goes sour. I wonder how the other players feel about it? When a game starts to go bad, it's usually felt by most players, and the DM will often pick up on that too.

Your best bet is to have that heart to heart, I wouldn't go with the "vote of no confidence" thing myself. I'd personally feel pretty defensive under those circumstances, and it would make it hard for him it improve the game.

Letting him know how you feel will hopefully allow him to improve as a DM. It may be worth it, although I admit it is hard to ave the talk.

Yeah, that's pretty broken.

Why didn't he just throw Pwent the Battlerager in the mix? He'd have fun slaughtering everything! Or, Drizzt or Cattie-brie. Really, if you're going to ruin a game, at least do it right. [:P][:o)]

Hey glauron, just have him look at this thread.

I don't have the heart to show him this thread. I had a chat with him this morning, and very politically "suggested" that we don't need NPCs and that he should set ELs for our party, without using all these hangers on. It went in one ear and out the other. He believes that an encounter is not a challenge unless it is life threatening. I told him that "shit might happen" at any time, usually when the "end of module" encounters come around, but not EVERY time we run across some baddies. He calls it exciting. Hmmm 50/50 (or higher)chance of dying every time you roll for initiative. I'm not so sure.

He was telling me about his plans to take us to Waterdeep when we are around L12 characters. Seems our new Paladin hails from those parts.
I wonder if his uncle is Piergeiron the Paladinson, or maybe Khelben Arunsun. He also mentioned a bunch of Beholders that we might need to rid the city of. Bloody hell, let Khelben do it. I shouldn't have shown him the DK Beholder sculpt - like the rest of us, he loved it. Looks like more of the same. Sigh. I better tell him I only have 3 beholders, just in case he plans to throw a dozen at us.

Come to think of it. Last Saturday could have been worse. Thankfully I only have 5 Hill Giants. Otherwise he might have been tempted to put more on the mat.

He's lost it. Its official, and sounds like there's no hope for him. Bloody Waterdeep's under threat by Beholders? Who zoggin' cares, Blackstaff, his missus and the other dozen or so Archmages of the city can take care of it! That and the Harpers, and the inhabitants of Skullport.
