Yeah, but it is a magical effect. He doesn't have to *actually* inspire his comrades... They are allowing an enchantment to affect them, basically.

Exactly: It is a supernatural class feature, not extraordinary. Turning also works instantly, doesn't it? That's because the effect doesn't just consist of raising a symbol and shouting some words. It also channels divine power. I think you have to look at Bardic music more in those terms.

I certainly see what you mean about it being a supernatural ability and all but I personally dislike it because it disrupts my sense of disbelief in what a wandering troubadours abilities should be. I guess the bard as written just isn't my bag. His abilities suggest prestige class to me somehow, probably taken by experts (musicians). Comparing bardic music to a clerics turning ability was just icing on the cake for me since, in my own games, the cleric does just raise his holy symbol and say a short prayer or incantation. I'm sure we've all seen enough vampire movies to see this in action many times. I'm also fond of the blast of holy light consuming the foe if the undead are destroyed by the turning attempt but thats just window dressing on my part.
