I think back to growing up on Knights of the Round Table, and Robin Hood stories most. But the characters I observe in movies or books now to get me all fired up for a game are easy (and players from my group will immediately recognize why these two characters get me going)

D'Artagnan: Chivalry, Duty, and swordsmanship. The character as written by Dumas is wonderful, but the main image for me comes in the Man in the Iron mask, with Gabrielle Byrne playing the part. Specifically, the final charge of the musketeers (plus Phillipe in the Iron Mask) at the King Louis and his pistol wielding musketeers. The statement muttered by the captain of the guards as the musketeers charge echoes in my mind as well when I watch this. "Magnificent Valor."

Zorro: I enjoy just about every Zorro movie, new or old I have ever seen. A champion of the oppressed with a sense of style and a sword.

How does this effect my game as a Player: My favorite characetrs are always swordsmen, preferrably with High dexterity. Often they are quite confident, even cocky. I also lean towards characters with strong sets of ideals. I've also been known to make the heroic charge a time or two.

Watching Clash of the Titans in elementary school (yes, IN SCHOOL) definitely got me started on fantasy stuff.

Well one of the first novel every read to me and the first novel I ever read myself was Hobbit, it had a lasting impression of loving Dwarves, disliking Elves and always wanting to be a wizard! [)]

Also from my youth Tintin gave me a sense of adventure, of course then there were the tales of Aurthor, Robin Hood, Sinbad, Zorro and all those cool Kung-fu flicks.

Gandalf and Merlin impressions of power without abuse and that the mind was truely the most powerful weapon.

Marco Polo, Vasco De Gama, Magellan, Columbus, & Alexander(and too many other's to mention) Adventures, visionaries men who mapped the world. They may have done it for greed, power or fame. They may have been even insane but in the end they did what only others dreams of.

How does this effect me as a player? Well first off I love playing wizards. Fighters, Rogues (in third edition never cared for theives) and Druids come a close second (though there is no influence why I like Druids so much.) If I don't play human I am likely to go with Dwarf. And I play as an adventurer/treasure hunter rather than as a mercenary, warrior of justice or any other motivator.

Oh yes and Clash of the Titans and Star Wars would both also be big time influencers.

I feel remiss to have not mentioned Clash of the Titans as well, and Sinbad for that matter. those old Harryhousen(sp) flicks set an early precedent in my mind for heroism.

Excalibur & Clash of the Titans Too![)] Great movies. Watching them as a child I believe helped open my eyes to a world of fantasy.

There are no one or two things that led me to play or influence my game. I remember being asked if I wanted to play when I was around 11 or 12 years old and I said sure, why not. Now at 33 and still playing.

Robin Hood: The original one played by Richard Greene. Before anyone else on this site was born. Now there was a multiclass ranger/rogue/fighter all rolled up in one. The original underdog. I was a kid I didn't realise he was a murdering outlaw.

King John: Signed Magna Carta in 1215. Foundation stone of democracy.

How does this affect my game as a DM: Things are never as they seem.

How does this effect my game as a Player: Well it's more fun to be Friar Tuck than Robin Hood. People expect way too much of leaders. Even today 75% of my characters are clerics.

I have always been here.

I've never seen Greene as Robin Hood, but there's no way, no possible way he could have been better than Errol Flynn in the role.
It just isn't possible. [:D]

really want to get peoples input. Merlin is often called a Druid mayexplain the attraction Monsoon as many of the values Merlin brought to the fore even in his wizardly incarnation have their basis in Druidic tradition. As for my heroes and whatnot... It is tough to say. The hobbit was a huge influence Thorin was the man. The Dark Crystal, (take a closer look at your Kobold Sorcerer mini) look familiar... hmm... yeess... sorry had to. Clash of the Titans is a classic along with Jason and the Argonauts. Alot of my inspiration came from play sword and stick fighting outside, the slaying of imaginary evil trolls and wicked sorcerers, with but my courage and a stick. I owe most of my gaming inspiration to what many have called an over active imagination. The Knights Templar are an interesting pick, though some of their exploits were less than honorable. They are the most historied of the Knightly orders that is for certain and more honorable than most of the men of their day. Which brings me to another that I just thought of Indiana Jones. The true adventure of it was magnificent "Indy Cover your Heart!" I still get chills at that part. How does this effect me as a DM/Player: As a DM these characters taught me that it is truely the characters story and I am there to color in the world around them. Free will of the PC's must be embraced so that you can aid in telling the Heroe's story. As a player much like Indy, most of my characters go adventuring for the thrill for the fame and to bring lost beautiful things back into the world, or into the world in the first place. An example is the character I am working on now who is a Priest of Bacchus god of wine and revelry, his reason for adventuring is to create a line of "dungeon spirits" basically he wants to bottle adventures for the common man, and on the way sample all the world has to offer in intoxicants and forms of merry making. Come forth good sir, if you be brave enough imbibe this "Temple of The Dying God Ale" or if you are a lusty type try this "Wood Nymph's Nectar" but I ramble what do you guys think of that character idea? Don't go off topic here shoot me an email. I really want to get peoples input.

Oh yes definitely!! Indy would be a HUGE reason my adventurous streak, hey who do you think lead me to Magellan & Polo in the first place! [)]

Merlin as a Druid I heard this before and COULD have had some influence into why I like the class so much...but then again the idea of wildshaping into a Dire Bear or Huge Earth Elemental doesn't hurt either! [:P] Seriously Merlin was just so awesome (depending what book your reading or movie your watching.) I've always liked how he handled the Knights, Morgana and life in general. A better Wizard/Druid than 99% of all those that have come since! (Gandalf may be that one better!) [)]

i would say my earliest influences were star wars, pretend army play, and toy soldiers. Once i was introduced to the game and the hobbit i couldnt stop playing. Played a halfling thief for many years. collecting the lead figures made the game even better
