If I had been the DM, I would have changed the puzzle.
In the Dm defense (and he did take a lot of abuse last night from all of the players) he did alter one of the other puzzles (mainly due to not having access to a colour photocopier in time)- I was just floored he allowed this one. | | Completed Trades: Crescent Hawk, Vimes, demagogue, vidman, Eric is God, Strachan Fireblade, FungiMuncher, Dudeeehm, Shasack, gausse, kyrin, nyjastul69 Champion of the Remorhaz

The puzzle notes that a DC 20 Decipher Script check will alert a PC to the fact that the numbers look like letters.

| In the authors defense, the numbers on the tokens are somewhat stylized and sort of look like letters.
Did your DM print them out and hand you tokens? If he did when they are laid out on a table some will be sideways and players will pick up on the fact that they could be used as letters. When I used it I slightly modified the text a bit to emphasise the "she-goblin" part a bit. The players figured it out, but there were a few groans. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! Actually according to the author (in a thread on ENWorld) the tokens aren't stylized at all to look like letters. His orignal designs were but the ones in the magazine are just numbers - plain and simple. We had the printed out tokens in front of us and no one at the table got any idea they could be used as letters, they simply don't look like letters no matter what angle you look at them.

If any of the numbers actually looked anything like letters then I could see it. They simply don't. | | Completed Trades: Crescent Hawk, Vimes, demagogue, vidman, Eric is God, Strachan Fireblade, FungiMuncher, Dudeeehm, Shasack, gausse, kyrin, nyjastul69 Champion of the Remorhaz

Ugh, I would have been very irritated with the DM for that. I'm all for roleplaying, but there comes a time when you have to give the dice a chance to bail you out.
Of course, were I a player, I probably would have asked if there were a roll that my I could make to see if my character could figure it out. | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?
