Loviatar is the maiden of pain, and a somewhat powerful god. God's don't mess with ordinary stuff so she's probaby after something powerful and related to pain. I would try something like:

Loviatar needs "the suffering of the innocent caused by the pure" (of course give it a cooler name)

Have the party get clues that she needs the purest form of pain and suffering to make her mighty artifact, but leave the details vague.

Have the party be attacked by minions of Loviatar who clearly claim as so: "You have invoked the wrath of the goddess, you will feel her pain for eternity, blah blah"

Make the leader have a kick ass weapon that the party wants to use and make the fight pretty easy.

Make later battles where the party uses the weapon against more minions.

in the conclusion let the party realize that they have been used by loviatar. Let them recover a book/sage/etc that describes the process. The weapon stores pain, and they have been fighting transformed innocents and whooping them severely. Then have the fully charged weapon be stolen. Once the dread sinks in of what they have done, they have to begin a mad chase to "beat the clock" and recover it before Loviatar finishes her stuff. The final set of encounters could be extra challanging for the party because they only have a limited time and thus no chance to rest/recover. They will feel obliged to hurry because a lot of it is their fault.

This gives me two thoughts. One, I was right to post this here because you guys have some great ideas. Two, I don't want to be playing a paladin in your campaign anytime soon. [:)]

Thanks for the ideas, I really like the stuff in this last paragraph.
