| | Well written review, I think book will be of invaluable use in the future. After reading it, I was inspired with easily a half dozen ways to incorporate it into my campaign. My only problem has been the negative cost involved and how best to house rule it, or if I should just leave it as is. | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. | My friends and I are running a game designed around the book, each of us is getting an item of legacy. We're heroes with a destiny to save . . . blah blah blah and our destiny is tied to an existing item. A little cliche, but the people I'm playing with are fun.
We've got a few sessions under out belt and are only 3rd level, but we should be getting these items soon. So within the next few months I'll be able to give a better report on how it effects gameplay long term. | | Sanity is a one trick pony, my friend, . . .but when you're good and crazy the sky is the limit.

| | Once again, great review. I'm in the middle of reading the book right now. What I find most interesting are alot of the adventure hooks. Lots of great ideas. Many of the weapons just don't seem worth the penalties to me however. Very interesting concept, but I'm not totatlly sold on it yet. | | I need a newcastle... | |

| | Interesting read. I wasn't really certain what this book was all about and now I am. I can understand where people may not like the idea of the penalty, however, I coule see using your suggested idea of allowing pc's to have an opportunity to remove them. Thanks for the review, I really enjoy reading them. | | Give me more MIND FLAYERS! | |

| I really not a fan of the penalties so I created an item without penalties. Let me know what you think. Crutch of Bradern-al
Bradern-al was a Wizard who lived Mulhorand approximately 500 years ago. He was obsessed with making his spells more powerful than the standard. His forays into the dungeons and crypts in the world were to find knowledge and items that would help him in his quest for power.
After many successes and some failures, he discovered in some long forgotten Arch-mage’s crypt, which was submerged in the Lake of Steam, an ancient tome. It described a cave, buried deep with in the Dragonsword Mountains, which contained a lake of lava, in the center of which stood a gnarled tree with no leaves. Somehow, it grew out of the magma and did not burn. The wood of this tree was rumored to be filled with magical energy. Bradern-al believed that, with this wood, he could craft a staff that would provide him with the power he desired. (Trial by water DC 18)
He searched for many years trying to find the cave, but to no success. It wasn’t until he fooled a party of Duergar into believing that the cave was filled with giant veins of adamantium ore. Fueled by their greed, the Duergar used every means they had available to learn any rumors they could of cave. After torturing a Flame brother, he revealed the location of a cave that seemed to fit the description of the one for which they were searching. What he didn’t tell them was that it was the home of a great red wyrm. (Trial by Fire DC 25)
They didn’t discover the existence of this dragon, named Magma, until half of the duergar were burning corpses. The battle was a fierce one and when it was over, every creature in the cave lay dead, except for Bradern-al, but he did not survive unscathed. Before he was able defeat Magma, the dragon bit off Brandern-al’s left leg. Barely hanging on to life, he was able to summon a salamander, who was able to reach the tree and bring back a branch. He made a crutch from the wood and eventually made his was back to the surface. This crutch, he was able to imbue with all of the power he yearned for. (Trial by Pain DC 31)
What happened to the crutch after his death was not know.
Legacy Rituals
Three rituals must be performed to unlock all of the abilities of the crutch
Trial by Water: You must drown and be resuscitated. Resuscitation requires a successful heal check DC 25. After regaining consciousness, you must make a Fortitude save DC 20 or die. If you die and a raised, the ritual is also considered completed. Level 5
Trial by Fire: You must travel at least 50 miles into a desert and light a huge bonfire and keep it burning for 24 hours. It will require at least 500 lbs of wood to complete this task. Level 11
Trial by Pain: You must have your left leg cut off and must make a Fort save DC 25 or die. You may not be healed or have the leg regenerated for one month. If you die, you can be raised, but not healed or regenerated for the same period of time. Level 16
Non legacy Abilities: +1 Quarterstaff. When first held, you feel chilled to the bone, then extremely hot, followed by severe pain in your left leg. This only happens the first time you pick up the Crutch. Acts as cold iron for damage reduction.

| What is the GP cost of the rituals?
The reason the penalties are there is to balance the lesser GP cost of the item.
Cheers! | | Merric Blackman
