 | | 08/14/2006 1:45 PM | Alert | Zherog's GenCon blog on the Wizards board has a bunch of info from the upcoming products seminar. Link is posted below, and text is included below that for those behind a firewall. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=681829 So we're home, and we've picked up the kids. I now have a PC that works, so it's time to pick up where I left off. I'll talk about the trip home later, in another post, as well as wrapping up. For now, I owe you a big post from Saturday.
My favorite session every year is the seminar WotC does where they talk about new products and take questions and (general) give answers. There's some things they can't answer, but most stuff does get something. I took a double-sided page worth of notes, so hang with me a while as I try to compile it all into some sort of coherent manner. Let's talk about some products first. In no particular order:
Dragon Magic: It's pretty much what you would probably guess. The book presumes dragons play an integral part in your world, and it explores what happens when dragon spells, items, and so on trickle down from the dragons to the general populace. Funny story from Chris Perkins: According to the people who do the research, books with the word "Dragon" in the title sell really well. Also, books with the word "magic" in the title also sell really well. So the marketing guy wondered - why isn't there a book named Dragon Magic?
One other interesting little tale. The initial design material for PHB2 and Dragon Magic came in around the same time. Both had a class that was eerily similar - even though the designers of those two projects didn't talk to one another. The PHB2 one (dragon shaman) was kept, and the Dragon Magic team had to come up with a new base class. They developed one called the Dragon Fire Adept. Hopefully it's as cool a class as it sounds.
Expedition to Castle Ravenloft: This is a mega-adventure, based on the old I6: Ravenloft module. It's the first in what's going to be a long series of adventures based on older favorites. I'll talk about this series more later.
Complete Mage: It's probably exactly what everybody expects based on the name - a book to give arcane casters some more love (even if you think they don't need it). I got the impression that the warlock was going to get some more lovin' in this book - though it wasn't explicitly stated, so if my impression is wrong don't track me down.
One thing Chris talked about a little bit in this book is a new type of feat called a Reserve Feat. Basically, your spellcaster has to prepare a specific spell, and as long as that spell is prepped, you have access to the feat. The example Chris gave was that your wizard could prepare Melf's acid arrow in the morning, and as long as the feat was still prepared, he could use the feat that goes with it, and it would likely have some sort of acid thing going on. It sounds like a cool concept, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.
Scourge of the Howling Horde: An adventure for 1st level characters! Even more important, I think, is the adventure is written with beginner DMs in mind, so there's lots of little things inside to help the DM work his way through. I think this is a great thing.
Shattered Gate of Slaughtergarde: This is a big juicy dungeon crawl. If Chris said the level range, I didn't write it down. But it's a multi-level dungon, so we can probably safely assume it covers a bunch of character levels. Sweetness!
Chess set: This looks freakin' awesome! It releases in October, and all the pieces are dragons. The queens are Bahamut and Tiamat. This looks like an awesome chess set, and I'm hoping the price is within my range.
Complete Scoundrel: From what I can gather on the Future Releases board, there's a bunch of speculation over this product. Well, not any more. The book is written for characters and DMs who are interested in intrigue and skullduggery. As somebody who would love to run an intrgue based game, I'll be checking this one out.
Barrow of the Forgotten King: Another adventure! This one is the first of a three parter. Each of the three can stand alone, but they'll have an over-arching plot that would allow a DM to tie them together if he wanted to. If Chris gave a level range, I didn't write it down.
FR1 Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave: Yet another adventure, and yet another part one of three. One thing Chris mentioned about the second installment in the series is that the characters get to help lead a peasent uprising! That sounds interresting, and I can't recall anything like that being done before.
Magic Item Compendium: There's a lot of talk about this one over on the Future Releases board, mostly because of the new item format. The book is going to contain 1000 of the "best" items previously published, much like Spell Compendium. Interrestingly, about one third of the items have an illustration!
Dungeonscape: My friend Rich Burlew co-wrote this book; I'm really excited for him. Chris described it as a book, similar to DMG2, that provides DMs tools to build a dungeon, as well as talking about how to go about it. I would've picked this one up without knowing what it is, because it's a way to support my friend, but I like new tools. Now all I need to do is get my players to not look at it.
Expedition to the Demonweb Pits: This is the second adventure in the "Expedition" series. Planar fans, you'll need to put this one on your list. It's supposed to be chock full of planar travel, and not just to the abyss. Also, we were told that we could expect Graz'zt to play a key role in the adventure. Good times! This adventure comes out in April 2007.
City of Peril: An urban adventure! This is also scheduled for April 07.
Eyes of the Lich Queen: Earlier we had an FR adventure, now it's Eberron's turn! Another April 07 release - looks like that's going to be adventure month!
So that's the new stuff that Chris talked about. There was also a lot of Q&A. Chris asked for suggestions for other adventures to do in the Expedition series. The following ones were tossed out:
Desert of Desolation Barrier Peaks Against the Giants Castle Greyhawk Undermountain
And there were probably a few others I didn't jot down. When the last two in that list were suggested, Chris implied that they were already on the list. Again, if I misinterpretted don't track me down.
A "Feat Compendium" is a distinct possibility for the future, especially if the interest shown by the attendees has anything to do with it.
I specifically asked if there was any thought to doing a book about Law and/or Chaos in the same series as BoVD and BoED. The answer was pretty much a no. Later, however, somebody asked about a generic book about alignment. That generated much more interest - both from Chris and from those in he audience.
Chris also asked for suggestions in the next "Monster" series - the same series as Libris Mortis, Fiendish Codex 1 and 2, and so on. The following creatures were tossed out:
Fiendish Codex 3 (addressing yugoloths and such) Constructs Giants Celestials
And probably some others I'm forgetting as well.

 | | 08/14/2006 3:54 PM | Alert | Thanks already have most of that info but the talk of Against the Giants and Undermountain sounds great! And if I had a vote on a monster themed book Giants would be it, but then I'd rather have a setting specific one. Right now I'm reading Giantcraft the Forgotten Realms book on giants an update to 3.5 is not something i'd be against. Also would like to a 'Draconomicon II' book to focus on all the other dragons they ignored in the first one. I suggested those two and I got the same impression as you. Seems
like they were already in mind. I also asked if another Spell
Compendium was being planned. Chris said no and then asked if we wanted
another one. I think about a dozen, maybe more, hands went up, so who

| | The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner and RPG designer from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute and RPGA certified DM named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark and THAC0. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons, D&D every night. In the spring we'd make meat helmets for LARP. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag, forced to walk the walk of a thousand four siders, and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, which was very handy for D&D. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles for LARP. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

Have you or anyone else heard if these are just repackaged books or if they include updates to make them fully 3.5 ready? | | 02/09/2007 12:02 AM | Alert | Well I've now updated until the end of the Year, at least until they add more like the Booster Set after Night Below...
PS. to make it easier to read I've also added horizontal lines to seperate each product.

 | | 02/14/2007 8:00 AM | Alert | | Yeah. I was hoping for something like that in 3rd ed, but thought when the Waterdeep supplement came out we'd never see one this edition. That and the Ruins of Greyhawk mod are definitely up there as my most looked forward to releases this year. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

Oh yes, I've been VERY aware of this one, I was afraid they were going to delay it's release when it disappeared from their listing at the end of 2006. But I'm very glad to see it back!
This will be the Expedition book I'm most looking forward to!
PS. Added the September released Icons pack to the list.
