| | I just got the epic handbook and was really blown away by the fact that people can find a way to place something like a hecatoncheires in thier campaign. Maybe I'm just sceptical because my PC's likely won't ever become skilled enough to face any of them (they've resorted to setting forest fires to escape enemies on at least four occasions) but has anyone ever implemented something that brutal in thier campaign and if so what was the parties EL and what were the conditions. | | | |

| | Well, the Hundred-Handed Ones are supposed to be Godkillers. They should be tough. To answer your question, no, I haven't used that specific creature ever, but the highest I've ever run a party is 25th level [Adventure Path Sunless Citadel through Bastion of Broken Souls, followed by the Keep of the Storm Lord (Dungeon) and Kerleth's Tower (Premade adventure in the ELH)]. Let me tell you, those stats that look so uber now don't seem nearly so scary once you see a well equipped, experienced team take them apart. | | Champion of the Entire Monster Manual 1! | My players will be going up against some avatars soon. That's pretty frightening. Otherwise, the toughest thing they've gone up against is probably a CR 25 dragon.
Some of that stuff in the Epic Handbook is pretty crazy.

| My group is beginning its path to the Bastion of Lost Souls with whatever mods the DM has introduced to not totally break it with respect to OA/Rogukan. We have been messing with Spirit plane stuff for a few levels anyway and have a double size party that when pulling together can do some serious stuff. Highest level will probably be 18th next time. Single critters that would sweep the field of low level characters become almost nuisance monsters at higher levels. There is a narrow range of power that keeps both sides somewhat balanced and play interesting.
At low to mid levels a swarm of Bakemono posed a serious threat to any warrior, but now, just as the experience table indicates, all of our warriors could wade into large numbers of them and have contests like Gimli and Legolas about who is killing more each round. Lets see, thats 5 swings and 7 dead Bakemono (Cleaves) for me....blah blah blah.... | | Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project.... http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp?user=Zenako last updated 29 May 2006 Set Status: in a nutshell = all of all In Process trades 0), (Sig last updated 05/29/06) 300 plus Completed Trades -

In my opinion things are very high or low in the Epic handbook. There are a lot of things that aren't too incredibly powerful and then there's the crazy stuff that will never go into a campaign because it is too powerful, CR50 or something crazy like that. My favorite insane was is the Xixecal, the walking glacier that can summon a ton of great Wyrm white dragons. Nice. | | Jason Slingerland

Yeah they are also nasties. I also think that the atropal is just insane, with all it's weird abilities and then the fact that a punch of nightwalkers follow it around. That'd be bad news.

At that level of play you probably don't go face to face with them. More like combine a bunch of wacky quests in order to create Item X that reimprisons them. A straight head to head fight sounds incredibly dull at that level of play. Still it would be fun trying to come up with a group of 4 PC's to take one (or 3) out.[:D] | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! | | The toughest creature I've ever run was a Marilith with fighter levels. I believe she was a total CR of 24. It was in the d20 adventure: Black Ice Well. Ran it for a group of 3 lvl 16 or so characters. They were almost 20 by the end. They managed to kill the Marilith in about 2 rounds. Even a group that size and that level can dish out impressive damage when they want to. Though if it wasn't for a whiffed attack on the party's spellcaster the battle would have been much more interresting. I've never run any epic campaigns or characters but I can imagine some of the stuff they can pull off by looking at that book. | | Looking to buy some figures? Chances are I may have them!! | | The most epic creature I've dealt with has been a Ruin Swarm. Didn't look particularily malicious when our party saw it at a distance but when it got closer oh boy. Of a party of 11 we lost our ranger who was scouting ahead of us (even if we technically couldn't see it the DM gave quite a spectacular description of him being flayed to death) and one of the wizards once it got close enough to engulf him as well. In despiration you'd be surprised how much smack down a few max'd flame strike, fireball and incendiary clouds let loose can bring in a few rounds. Worst part of that whole scenario is the evil sorcerer we were hunting down managed to avoid the chaos and still get away because like idiots we took way to long in combat. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing? | |
