Ok my gaming group has lost a few members, and the ones that stuck (including me) are tired of D&D. After looking threw my self for my old L5R books I stumbed across The Deadlands book I bought a couple years ago.

Ok I have a few questions for you people who play, and I think there are a few of you .

Frist off does this sound like an ok story to you, and if not what would you change.

The group

Mustang A half Sioux Huckster, and Lieutenant in the Union Army

Billy "two tooth" Tony a pardoned outlaw, and Private in the Union Army

1 unknown however I hope he goes Gunslinger(ish).

The story I have set up for them.

The groups unit is told to defend small town of Quartz Oklahoma. The unit will consist of the 3 players another private, and a commanding officer. The players will be told that they are deep in Disputed lands, and a Confederate attack could happen at any time. When they get there they will be told that the Coyote Confederation has put on there war paint, however no attacks have happened yet. Oddly enough though just last night the local sharif was baffled at a case of grave robbing.

Ok at this point I hope the players mingle a bit with the locals, but you never know. Anyway night falls, and there is another grave robbing, and this time the sharif is missing. Ok players, and Commander should be worried, and if the players don't suggest it then the CO will that they set up a watch. The Commander will take the 3rd watch. Come morning yet another grave will be empty and the commander will be gone. Only this time there is a lot of blood on the ground. Ok all players stay up next night (I hope) they see movement in the grave yard. Then it breaks into combat. The Grave Robbers are the Shaman Redshirt, and another Indian brave. After the fight they can easyly find the tracks (they did not have time to cover them back up this time) that lead back to a cave. As they enter the cave they get attacked by two Walkin' Dead. After the battle they find a create of Confederate dollars. Neither the Sherif nor the Commander's corpse is in the cave.

After that I plan on coming up with 2 or 3 possible archs incase they decide to trace the create, stay and defend the town like told, or go for revenge on the Coyote Confederation. If they did not burn the corpses of the two Indians when they return to town they will be gone.

The bad guys

Shaman Redshirt

Start the battle with 6 favor, and with 4 point in Maim he has no problem cutting off another finger for 3 mroe back up points.

Indian Brave

Loves his Tomahawk, but will use his bow if he has to.

2 Walkin Dead
At this point the players may be very hurt so both of there pistols have a malfunction number of 10 as they where burried with them awhile ago.

Anyway this is the first game I have ran like this. Never even done a normal western game so any advice would be great. And does anyone have any links for any information about the game. All I have is the one core book.

frist off wich core book. the old one or the one that uses dice. if it is the new oner one i can not help you, for the rules have changed. however the story looks good and so do the bad guys. having both played in and run the system, it looks like it should be a good changlene for your group.

Deadlands is an old Favorite of mine. Mixing the western with Horror makes for a cool game, Deadlands pulls off that cosmology rather well.

As far as recomendations go.... I'd watch some spagetti westerns. Possibly have the whole group sit down before an Eastwood flick during the first session. Here's a couple other books you might find usefull.

A Fistfull of Zombies - Part of Eden Studios All Flesh Must Be Eaten line. It's a great read with lots of Campain Ideas and Plot Threads. It tackles several different Western genres from the Spagetti Western to Singing Cowboys.

The Zombie Survial Guide - A funny funny book, it's got some very interesting historial occurances in it. It would be amusing if the Texas Rangers or even the Agency had a version of this book.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Western and Horror really do go well together. Although our game never took off, I really enjoyed the few games of Deadlands that I managed to play in.

Now, all I need is someone to direct a really good Western/Horror film with werewolves...

Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish

And its co-written by Shane Lacecy Hensley, the nutter who gave us Deadlands in the first place!

I'm looking forward to Deadlands Reloaded next year, the Savage Worlds based rerelease of Deadlands: The Weird West. Awesome, kooky setting, and loads of fun.

Support awesome games: Play Hecatomb!

There have been several incarnations of Weird West Tales-type comic books. If you can find one or more of those cheesy rip-the-front-cover-off used book stores, and you have the patience to sort through hundreds or thousands of battered old comics, you could find dozens of books for inspiration, and spend less than $10 total.

If you're looking to include a sci fi element into the game, the movie Westworld might give you some ideas.

Watching all the spaghetti westerns is a great idea.
