All,

I'm going to be sending a party of 9 characters through Shargaas' city, The Night Below, and I'm looking for some inspiration. I've read the Planescape text, the third edition text, and several of the online stuff that's available (scanty, but better than nothing).

I know that the place is notoriously difficult to map, but I was hoping someone here has done some DMing of an underground region with lots of twists and turns and would happen to have a jpeg or something that I could use as reference. (I've looked at all the "map of the week" stuff from WotC and most of it is just too limited for my tastes--for this particular situation.)

The party is on its way to somewhere else in that 4th layer of Gehenna, and I'm planning to make their trek through the plane a rather rough one (they've already worked their way through the other 3 levels of Gehenna). If you've got any suggestions, I'm all ears (the average level is 19).

Yeah, The Night Below is from the Planescape stuff. I think it's mentioned in the 3e Manual of the Planes, but I'm not sure. Shargaas is considered the leader there, and it's a hidden place on the 4th layer of Gehenna. Here's some of the text from the Planes of Conflict book.

"The Night Below comprises a series of caverns extending off into infinity, beyond even what the confines of Krangath could hold--yet there are caves under the surface of the layer that are not a part of his realm! Some say that Shargaas' realm reaches into every cavern in every world, at the cold spots that adventurers associate only with temperature. It's thought that Shargaas can see each of these spots, and determines whether or not to take a berk whenever he passes that spot.

It's impossible to tell where any of the caves lead. They twist up, down, around, and inside and out, some even winding over each other like giant worms in love. The occasional passageway might connect 'em, but a body really shouldn't bet his life on it. . . .

The name Night Below is more than just pretty symbolism. It's the truth. The darkness is utter, and any light illuminates only a 5-foot area, no matter how powerful or magical. Even infravision doesn't work. In Shargaas' realm, only he and his servants can see in the dark. . . ."

Cool enough, but I'm not really sure what I want to do for maps. Of course I don't plan to literally try mapping just an Escher-like thing. But, I'd like to have some ideas. I might just go with description, maybe let the dwarves fail some checks to know where they are (for dramatic effect), and just go with encounters, ignoring the map stuff.
