Hello all!

As a counterbalance to my negative spell thread, I thought I'd share an application of an old spell that was new to me.

One of the PC's in my campaign is a ranger archer that is nicknamed "the Cannon." Totally maxed out on ranged combat, and a mean motor scooter. I'm always trying to figure out new ways for intelligent foes to neutralize her. Well, last session, I cast the hemisphere option for Wall of Ice on her. She was trapped for a few rounds as she hacked her way out.

Anybody else recently used an old spell or magic item in a new (for you) way?

There are a few common 'alernative' uses for spells that I do no a regular basis ... (alignment permitting)

Summon Monster as Detect Traps.

Otiluke's Sphere as a prison for an enemy, or as a shell to protect a wounded or dominated PC. Alternativly, it (or a wall spell) makes a nifty 'counterspell' for a fireball ... *boom*

Blur is a nice spell to prevent an arcane tricketser from being recognized during a robbery.

I play a wizard in a campaign of mostly fighter-types. I can't tell you how many times I've used bear's endurance as a fast-and-dirty substitute for a heal spell when one of those idiots was down to single-digit hit points.

Here's another fun trick I pulled last time. There was a rather enormous battle going on, with lots of distractions. One of the fighters was in a heap of trouble and I flew over to where he was. My character was hasted, and the DM still uses the 3.0 version of haste, so I could cast two spells next round . . .

On the next round, I cast invisibility on the fighter, and created an illusion of the same fighter across the battlefield. There had been enough teleporting and the like so that the illusion of a fighter popping in out of nowhere was believable.

All the relevant enemies fell for it. The invisible real fighter could walk off the battle field and keep himself alive, and the DM let him play the illusion as if it were really him as the enemies all failed their Will saves to notice.

A quick defensive combo I've used with my Elemental Savant is to cast Flaming Sphere and then Control Flames to snuff it and create a large smoke screen. At lower levels it was a good combo and way my wizard could help out cover our butts/save bacon when we got in over our heads.

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

hmmm...

Blade barrier cast parallel to the ground about ankle high in the midst of a large group of enemies.

I played a cleric that used to memorize both wall of stone and stone shape so we could rest. It was good to have stone shape at all times so we could get out if necessary.

One big problem with this... The HP's from bulls endurance are not like temp HP's. They don't come off first and when the spell ends those HP's just disappear, if that drops the character to -10 or lower the character dies.

Our wizard likes to cast Evard's Black Tentacles to hold opponents for a few seconds and then blast away with fireball untill there is nothing left twitching.

We also have used large containers of Alchemist Fire as either short ranged bombs or shattering preset containers with magic missles or arrows.

I've seen Enlarge Person used to enlarge an unconscious person so the Cleric could reach them easily and not have to worry about being threatened when the enemy's turn came around.

I like, but magic missiles cannot target inanimate objects.

We never actually used magic missle but talked about it... The wizard was too busy with other spells so we shot with arrows.

The thrown bombs actually worked pretty well, both characters throwing them rolled nat 20 on the to hit rolls (too bad you can't crit with grenade like weapons.)

Hmm, strange uses have happened, but I had a cleric pull a nasty combo on a fire giant once:

The party had managed to corral a frost giant leader-type against a ridge it couldn't hope to climb quickly (sharp rocks, angled surfaces, loose boulders and skree way up high). Anyway, my cleric had been in the thick of various battles of the frost giant attack, and wasn't doing too badly. He certainly didn't want to go toe-to-toe with "Big Gruesome" after all that, though.

So, he gets the bright idea: Drop a blade barrier at its feet. Constant damage, but it can get out, right? Well, it tried. Next round, down comes Flame Strike #1. It actually set off a small avalanche of boulders, pinning the giant's feet in place. It wouldn't reach down for boulders to throw thanks to the blade barrier. Next round, down falls Flame Strike #2. More boulders fall. One clunks Ole Frosty Longshanks on the noggin, and down it goes -- stunned -- falling into the blade barrier.

That was a VERY short fight. [)]

Hmm, I do remember one time we had to get to a site that was on the other side of about 100 fet of briars, tangles, and marsh. The only safe way would have taken about 3 miles of walking to get to.

That cleric (mine) was tired of slogging through the crap, and he wasn't going to deal with annoying, grabby plants, so he fired up the blade barrier and carved his own route! [)]

Regarding blade barrier, from the SRD (emphasis mine):

Had an amusing situation a few sessions back. There is a gnome illusionist in our group. Battle was joined, he gets a bit paniced and casts mirror image on himself. (somewhat standard operating procedure), then casts invisibility which raised the whole meta magic question about what happened to the mirror images. Well they went invisible too, which meant that only those who could see invisible were being affected by the mirro image effects. From that point on we suggested to Mr Illusionist, that he make all his spells invisible to keep from distracted the fighters from the enemies at hand...

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....
