| | I am DMing and my group of adventurers bought light warhorses to quicken travel times between towns. I am having difficulty finding all the rules on how to handle riding horses. Say there is some wandering monsters that stumble upon the group while they are riding their horses. And they want to fight on foot. Is dismounting a move equivalent action? Say they are next to a monster, could they dismount and attack? They couldn't dismount, move and then attack, right? Also, are there rules about where they can dismount to in relation to the horse? I know there isn't facing in 3.5, but it makes sense to me that someone would have to dismount to a square adjacent to the horse, but to the side of the direction the horse had been going. I would think that there would be more specific information easy to find in PHB or DMG, but I have had difficulty finding it. | | "Look to God and live." | I found some information on mounts in the PHB. I found the parts that talked about dismounting being a move equivalent action unless they do fast dismounting DC 20. It didn't say anything about where the PC can dismount to, though. Any adjacent square?
I found that someone may make a ranged attack while riding a horse. If the horse does a single move before or after, there is no penalty. If the horse makes a double move, there is a -4 penalty.
Can someone have their horse make a double move and then have their character attack? When it isn't a charge? | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse | |

It's a five part series. I just printed it out myself, as I'm hoping for my dwarven cleric to gain some mobility in combat by use of a mount. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| Those articles are definitely a good summary of the rules for dealing with mounts.
I was actually going to print them out for Sunday too, just in case we manage to survive our not-so-stealthy infiltration of the castle AND our horses are still alive when we get back to where we left them [:)]
One minor addition, regarding the use of skills while your mount is moving, described in the Concentration skill.
If using a skill normally provokes an attack of opportunity, using it while your mount is moving also requires a concentration check (DC 10) or the skill check fails. If your mount is running the DC increases to 15.
