Subject: Need a clearer explination

I was looking at the races of stone book and was trying to figure out how level adjustments work for a goliath its 1 so to get any class levels you would nead to be level 2 that i get. but the stonechild has a +4 so at level 5 you could add classes(I think) but the monster class has six levels thats the part that I can't figure out. I'm sure its obvious but I'm clueless.

Don't forget that level adjustment is
in addition
to any racial hit dice. Creatures with only 1 racial HD can start as a character class and simply add on the ELA (ex. Goliath can start as a barbarian 1 + 1 LA = Lvl 2). I don't have my books with me, but I'm guesing that the Stonechild already has 2HD as a base "monster" and so it's ELA of +4 boosts that to ECL of 6
before
you start adding on other levels (thus the 6 level race progression).

I knew it would be obvious I must have overlooked that little tidbit. I don't have savage species and the Races of stone explination is pretty brief.
