| Is this just for HP levelling? I wondered, cause if not, then I can't find the information for it anywhere. Thanks Chris | | My Trading Thread | |

| | A creature’s Hit Dice total is also treated as its level for determining how spells affect the creature, its rate of natural healing, and its maximum ranks in a skill. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis | |

| ok so like if your using a monster for a pc instead of regular races right? I'm not sure but i think you revert to the class hit dice. | | Champion of Flint Fireforge Knight of The DarkMantle KoK: The Easily Swayed "I use to have a working probelm, until it got in the way of my gaming." | |

You're really not being very clear here.
The Hit Dice line of a creature's description will indicate the type of dice rolled when determining the monster's non-class HD, and how many of those dice that you roll to determine the total hit points (as well as any bonus hps from high constitution or feats).
If you make a tougher (commonly refered to as advanced) version of the monster, you roll additional dice of the same type. This is not the same as advancing the creature. Creatures do not grow into tougher versions using the monster 'advancement' rules in the back of the DMG.
However, some monsters can gain class levels. When they gain class levels, they use the class features, such as the hit point dice specified for the class, to determine how many additional hit points they gain.
As an example, a troll normally has 6d8+36 hit points. Trolls do not come in 'advanced versions', like many other creatures. Instead, trolls gain class levels to make them tougher. If our example troll was assigned 3 fighter levels, it would have its normal 6d8+36 hit points, plus an additional 3d10+18 hit dice for the fighter levels. As it advanced to 8 HD, it would also gain an additional ability point to distribute. If it put that point in constitution, it would then have 6d8 + 3d10 + 63 hit points instead of 6d8 + 3d10 + 54. | | Champion of Meepo _*_ Myztek on the Wizards Boards. _*_ (2206 DDM on 03/06/06) Please note: The use of the indicates an attempt at humor ... often a bad attempt. | | Note that everything has HD, not just monsters. There's no differentiation between characters and "monsters" in that respect in 3E. | | Anson on WotC boards | |
